Death is part of life but the stories in this thread put dust in my eyes.

I'm part of that 64% The difference? A plan. Stored, in a safe, with an atmosphere where the efficacy of the pills won't deteriorate over time.

Death? I fart in your general direction.

Becoming dependent and/or losing my intellect to Alzheimer's or dementia, not so much.

You just have to know when to take the pills...before you become demented or unable to swallow. I can do that.

My kids and hubs will not be saddled with a drooling, incontinent, shell of my former awesomeness! (I keed, I keed.) But I'm totally serious about the plan. Not to mention my end-of-life "living will" includes non-family members who can make sure I don't linger if I fark it up.

That is all.

As an older buddy of mine said, after surviving melanoma this past year: he just wants his kids to leave his car in the garage with a full tank. Nail the garage door shut if you want, I won't be driving anywhere.

tarheel07: rudemix: 64%? That's so strange. Who wouldn't want to sit around far into ueslessness needing assistance in every aspect of your life and feeling miserable, say compared to choosing your own option when the time is right?

Jesus didn't get to choose when he wanted to die, and neither should you.

-1. Try again.

I can't deal with this...It's too much.

All I can offer you is a big hug. I hope it helps. I'm also all teared up now...

Thank you. Hugs right back to you.

Do_What_Now: So sorry to hear you're going through this. This is one of my big fears too. Take care.

/also posting (even though I'm almost entirely a lurker) because your post made me tear up, and as I reached for my mouse, I may have accidentally hit the "Funny" button. I think I just highlighted it without clicking, but perhaps it will crack you up to picture your post emotionally reaching out to a clumsy woman in Texas and then making me shout "JESUS CHRIST! JESUS CHRIST! THAT WAS NOT FUNNY! FARK THESE BUTTONS!!"

I appreciate this...I laughed so hard I snorted. Love you so much for this.

FarkinHostile: My condolences on your losses, and your mothers condition.

Nothing I say can help but I really empathize and feel your pain. Lost some very dear people to me this past year.

Thank you, dear. And my sincerest condolences on your losses as well. This year has been one mother farker.

Duh, no shiat. If you make it into your 40s and have the first (false) health scare, you very quickly realize that you're gonna die at some point, and it's HOW you die that matters. Personally, I'm looking forward to my next Afghanistan deployment, because why not?

Having seen what I have seen, I can't say I disagree. Those have been some of my biggest fears since I was a teenager. Intense chronic pain is hell.

FarkinHostile: I'm 42, and it's the same for me. Always has been.

All the hubbub about assisted suicide is silly. ANYONE can get their hands on enough pharmaceuticals, either legally or illegally, to make a graceful and pain free exit. Just do it and enough with pushing a touchy issue.

That's not true, unfortunately. Sometimes even nearly-lethal doses of the most powerful painkillers you can get don't even touch the pain. Death can be a mercy in some situations.

TheWhoppah: Why don't we use an overdose of herion for euthanasia and lethal injections? This seems like a nice way to die. Give them a regular dose to get them feeling no pain then hit them with an overdose. Cheap and effective.

/not as cheap as a noose

I've wondered about that. Right now they use a three drug system for lethal injection: a sedative, then a paralytic substance, and then potassium chloride to actually kill the guy. It seems unnecessarily complex. Also, I've heard stories of the sedative wearing off, or not giving enough of it, and the condemned prisoner feels the full nasty effect of the KCl, a terrible way to go. If we're going to execute people, which I am personally against, why not simply use an overdose of the sedative and be through with it? Much simpler, and less risk that the prisoner will feel any pain.

Hack Patooey: My dad, 83, is sliding fast down the Alzheimer's slope, and mom, 82, is having more and more trouble taking care of him. Dad has enough of his facilities left and *knows* he should be in an assisted living facility, but is having trouble accepting it, so it's not an option beyond discussion right now. :/

sorry... we did that just the other year. approaching the end is rough, and there is a lot of fear, they just cant remember why they are afraid. after grandpa died, grandma went a year later. no one in the family can decide if we didnt realize grandma was going too, or if she just gave up after grandpa went.
