Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that the world's real fastest supercomputer is and has been sitting, unpublicized, in an unmarked room in a sub-basement at the NSA?

Unfortunately it's running Windows 8.

But can it run Crysis?

I don't see how or why they'd need a single supercomputer that beats all others.

I imagine they have a multitude of Really Quite Fantastic But Maybe Not The Best (RQFBMNTB) supercomputers.

Since when have government expenditures been based on what is needed?

It blew my mind when I saw the article that said the National Reconnaissance Office had two Hubble-quality space telescopes *sitting in storage*. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if some clandestine organization had the world's fastest supercomputer doing the same.

Glad to see we will wave our penises about the biggest and fastest no matter what is involved. We should come up with ridiculous things to have the biggest and/or fastest of:

1) Metal slinky
2) Circular fan
3) Canoe
4) Meat slicer
5) Female condom for your mom
6) deadly virus to replace HIV/Ebola/whatever
7) trailer park
8) zip line
9) pier
10) playing cards deck

They prob do. At ORNL, no less.

I would bet they have the worlds honking biggest and fastest integrated data storage facility. I wouldn't think that the computers that use that data have to be particularly well integrated with each other.

Is there any metric and roll call of the worlds biggest data farms? Google's is huge but it is distributed not integrated.

My guess, and hope, is that it wouldn't be just "a" computer but would be a cluster of them.

So, subby's saying it took us half a century to repeat the IBM 7094 demo?
