Seriously, Could the global economy be a bigger house of cards? Apparently the entire world economy teeters on Greece? GTFO. I don't think the central banks have enough power over international governments and their policies. [sarcasm intended]. I know watching 'Americas Got Talent' is more fun than bread lines, but after this falls elections, austerity and the removal of safety nets is gonna be all the rage here in the states. The banks gots to be paid, but don't worry... the industrial military complex and Wall Street will be just fine. Your home value and 401K benefits, maybe not so much. I sure hope Wal-Mart don't run out of cheap Chinese shiat for us to buy. Now go put some salt on your 'smart phone'... it's gonna taste delicious. Those new ultra-thin 'tablets' will be usefull for looking up 'home remedies' when you can no longer afford medical treatment.

After years of this crap, I still don't see why the Greek economy is being considered so important around the world. Yes, its success or failure will have an impact on all of Europe, and that will have repercussions internationally, but it's hardly a major player in the grand scheme of things. Their economy has been crappy for a very long time, so their problems aren't a major disruption to the norm.

Why do people care so much? Even if the entire Greek financial system fell into ruin and it became a third-world country, why should this effect the North American, Asian, and even most European stock markets and other exchanges by more than a few percentage points? It's not an enormous market for us (the rest of the world) to sell to, and they don't produce anything that we desperately need and can't get elsewhere.

Because Spanish banks own $87 Billion of Greek Debt (actually, that might be euros, which would make it ~$110 Billion) and they already don't have enough capital to cover their own failed real estate portfolios.

This is why Greece is in trouble.

Not because they are socialist.

Not because they are lazy.

But because everybody in the farking country doesn't pay their taxes and the politicians want the tax cheaters' votes so they don't press the issue (and, instead, cooked the books).

What's more, because the European central bank refuses to inflate the currency or bailout the banks directly (instead bailing out the nations which then bailout the banks) they're setting themselves up to fail. It's not that Greece will hammer the world's economy, it's that Greece will hammer Spain and Italy which will hammer the Euro, which will hammer the world economy.

No it wasn't. It was a financial bubble that many, like Spain, had nothing to do with besides being the victim of it.

So you admit that austerity isn't working and is, in fact, making things worse.

Was not serious, there are 17 member states in the Eurozone. Just pointing out the fixation on only four of the countries there.

As for the PIIGS thing, It all depends on what you think of Ireland. I don't consider Ireland to be in the same boat as the others, so I generally leave it out when discussing those countries.

They also all collect taxes.

Basically, we've given up on the Greeks actually collecting what's owed. Revenue will never rise; it's culturally capped. Austerity just demands they spend less.

Actually, several of the more socialist (policy-wise) European countries are doing quite well. Do try and keep up.

What's lead to the financial colapse is a centralized currancy without a centralized government for that currancy. Simplifying a lot, but this -is- FARK, after all.

And Merkel just reiterated that renegotiation of the bailout terms are out of the question! OMG SELL!

Funny how Greeks thought she would change her mind on this if they elected a pro-bailout pro-negotiation party coalition. I guess it's much easier to govern Greece from Brussels when you don't have striking workers and rioting outside your Parliament.
