(The Sun)   Hey, let's send a woman alone into an enclosure with 8 wolves who have attacked people before. I mean, what's the worst that can happen?   (thesun.co.uk) divider line 23

From TFA: He said the animals would not be put down.

Good. It's nice, for once, to see that they aren't going to execute the animals for acting like their natural wild selves.

The problem is, if someone doesn't execute the animals for acting like their natural wild selves, they'll be more keen to kill and eat people, now they've learned that people are on the menu and taste good. They should be put down immediately to minimize risks of future attacks.

That reeks of Rogue Shark Theory, which has not been supported. There is no data supporting that wild animals change their natural habits just because they taste human.

The opposite's probably true. These wolves have probably been around to many humans and lost the normal "don't attack things bigger than you" impulse.

But even still, walking into an enclosure with eight wolves is always a risk. I love wolves, but I wouldn't ever knowingly walk into a pack's den. Feed'm with a pulley and tranq them if its vet time. Otherwise leave them alone.

Put wolves in a zoo display, that's going to happen anyway. Put 8 rottweilers in a zoo pen and they'd go go nasty on you too, better they were trained somewhat.

"A WOMAN zookeeper was mauled to death by a pack of wolves yesterday as she fed them in their enclosure"

Mission accomplished.

croesius: laid back w/bud light: But yet it's great to reintroduce wolves into the US to kill livestock and elk and deer herds. Wolves only reduce game animals which are tasty and bring in more revenue. Wolves can't be eaten , and breed much faster than their prey. If I ever see a wolf or black bear in my backyard I'll pay the fine for shooting it to protect my 10 year old from being dragged away. And yes I know black bears are not typically aggressive, but they have started to move into my area very quickly in the past few years.

Just curious, but why can't a wolf be eaten? Seems it would have a better flavor than most of the other canine species, what with being out in the wild and all.

Well, mostly we dont eat predators because the trophic cycle makes it not worth it to farm them. But i was under the impression that, except for certain species of fish, predators generally taste lousy compared to their prey. But again, because of the trophic cycle, farming certain species of fish just doesnt make a lot of sense...

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: As a society, aren't we beyond trapping wild animals in compact enclosures and putting them on display for our personal amusement?

Clearly someone doesn't know what zoos are actually for.

Jan Tengeborg, who organised the attempt to recover the body, said: "We couldn't get into the enclosure because the wolves clearly did not want us in there. You can't just walk right into a wolf pack."

How about, "I grabbed a couple of firearms and started shooting the killing bastards. At that time the wolves had no issues with us getting to the victim" ?

Because you just don't just kill an endangered species, dumbass.

/At least I assume they are endangered. TFA didn't say which breed of wolf, so I couldn't look it up.

Except there is a very good reason that female zookeepers have to be more careful and mindful than males... at certain times,

Biology and animals doesn't give a flying fark about equal rights.

Zoos are insanely educational. I would prefer keeping zoos since they improve society.

angry_redhead: You'd think after the first time they actually would've reconsidered someone going into the enclosure, especially alone.

Sometimes you have to go into the enclosure to get the poops.

In America, carnivores are shuttled around in into rear chambers while work is done on their enclosure. They're also double fenced, so that even if you ARE feeding them by directly pushing the bowl, they still can't take swipes at you.

Scary.

Scary indeed. Scarier still is a "professional" who would enter the enclosure of a pack of hungry carnivores to feed them. Scarier yet is the decision of the zoo not to destroy any of the wolves which have now tasted human flesh and has learned humans make great food. You know, just on the highly unlikely chance that one or more of these animals might get out of captivity. Of course, the zoo surely has a foolproof security program, right?

We don't know what happened-perhaps there were rules in place but zoo didn't follow them and she feared losing hee job-I've had a few jobs that ignored safety and when I brought it up they threatens to fire me

It boggles the mind that they didn't have some feeding method set up that didn't involve being inside the enclosure with the animals. Or if they did, it wasn't being strictly enforced.
