That's a good mentality to have for your kids, seriously. My Dad isn't filthy rich, but he's well off, "comfortable" you might say. But my parents basically had a saying, "Once you're 19, you're out the door."

I've had to make it on my own unlike a couple of people I've known who have turned out, shall we say, morally weak? They may have had more opportunities handed to them, but as people, they still have expectations that things just should be given to them and don't know how to cope when they aren't.

If only Papa Koch was such a guy. Kind of ironic that the Koch Brothers talk about abolishing entitlements and being all bootstrappy, yet they had their bazillions given to them on a silver platter from the moment they were born.

/NEVER trust anyone who has never spent a single day of their life being hungry.

It's a commendable philosophy, but the kids of rich folks have a pretty sterling track record of getting their parents' money after those parents die, regardless of what their wills and the like have to say on the matter. Our court system is pretty clearly on the side of any wealthy heirs looking to get their hands on an inheritance, so unless these parents spend it all before they die, I doubt it'll make a difference.

"YOU GET NOTHING! GOOD DAY, SIR!"

I want to disagree with this principle, but I can't think of a single good reason why it's better to leave your fortune to your children simply because they're your children. Particularly in light of how most have paid for their childrens education and given them (in most cases) a fairly generous amount of money anyway.

This so much. And trying to deal with them sometimes is a little trying.

"what do you mean you can't prove income between such and such time?"

It's kind of hard to make a spoiled suburban brat understand that I didn't report 30$ and dinner a couple times a week to the IRS.

They're morally weak, and you come to brag about your superior moral fiber in a Fark thread, lmao. I guess you still resent being booted out of the nest.

As a brat of an Air Force Master Sergeant, I don't feel bad for the kids. I'm glad these dudes are in on the "Giving Pledge." I only wish the rest of the fully capable could find themselves more culpable. Not in the sense of blame, but in the sense that investment in society actually matters.

My father was like that, until all of his kids got married and had careers. Now he is actually fairly generous with his wealth. I guess he figured since we grew up and all got advanced degrees he couldn't "spoil" us.

Not sure if it was his plan all along, but it worked pretty well.

Funny how Bill Gates seems to forget that he was raised in a wealthy family and his banker grandpa set him up with a million dollar trust fund when he was born in 1955....worth about 20 million today. How do you think he was able to get Microsoft off the ground..........oh, right all boot strappy.

Despite all the big talk, these kids still benefited from enormous privilege. Just the fact that daddy is a super wealthy, big time player opens doors the rest of us will never be allowed anywhere near.

2012-06-17 07:06:34 PM
Yeah, nothing except the education, networking, social status, etc.... that comes from having super rich parents.

There should be a 99% estate tax on people that end up with millions and millions after their parents die. Warren Buffer's quote is correct. They are just part of the "lucky sperm" club. No more American dynasties!

I would totally be ok with getting a miniscule $10 million inheritance.

I mean, it would involve lots of hard work and I'm not sure if I'd be able to actually get by on that, but I'd TRY. Life is the journey, not the destination. It'll work out, I'm SURE of it!

Yep - Bill Gates' kids get 10 mil each. A small percentage of his fortune, but I think they'll be ok.

Yup. Gates was able to get his hand on a mainframe computer when he was a 16 year old prep school geek....this back in the day when 99% of adults didn't even know what a computer was. Nope, no privilege there.

Yep... you could live a very nice upper-middle class life on just the interest on 10M. Even if you're only getting 3% on your investments and re-investing half of that, that's still 150K/yr. Not filthy rich, but definitely comfortable.

I have a friend in a similar position. He's the illegitimate son of a wealthy businessman. He was never given a dime by his father. The rich old bastard even treats his legitimate kids like shiat, playing games with them so that they're at each other's throats.

CSB...

I graduated at 17. I graduated on a Friday and left for a mission trip to help build a church on Saturday morning. I returned a week later.

The morning after I returned, my father walked up to me and said, "I did it, and you can, too. I want you out in a month."

No money for college (Even though his income disqualified me for most scholarships)
No help with rent
No nothing.

I did get full rides from most of the schools to which I applied. However, I chose a school that didn't offer me money because it was the better school, and 'fark you, pop'... I don't need your damn help.

I would do that if I was filthy rich, except I wouldn't give my money to what people usually consider charity. I'd give it to NASA or as prize money for people to invent crazy things

Using your logic large family farms and businesses should be sold off and the proceeds given to the IRS? You're a moron.

Johnny Savage: No money for college (Even though his income disqualified me for most scholarships)

That's one of the bullshiattiest bullshiat things ever. A girl in my high school had to take a semester off of college because her mom got remarried to a wealthier guy so she lost a good chunk of whatever financial aid she was getting.
It's not like that dude's really going to be inclined to spend his money on some 20 year old girl who he only met a year ago.

The kind of wealth that is being discussed in the article isn't a family business or farm. Those kinds of things are not considered the same as investments in stocks or large sums of cash. If you think the two are the same, or are considered the same for legal or tax purposes, then you are the moron.

Nice. This biatch was more interested in hooking up with a sugar daddy than her own flesh and blood. Does this girl still talk to her mother, because in the same situation I would break off all contact.

Entire vasts sums of money have been spent on 20 year old girls that the man just met a year (or less ago).

So Fark cheers for the hatred of rich people, not surprising. Haters, even not given their money they are given more than you will earn in you lifetime, suck on that.

2012-06-17 07:32:09 PM
I'm generally okay with this.

Some children would be fine with the inheritance, many would not.

The grandchildren would be hell-spawn incarnate. Every last one of them.

/spread your wealth as you see fit for when you go.
//remember, you were disproportionately compensated for your talent in life.

How does donating the bulk of your inheritance to charity qualify as "greedy"?
