Because 'Ellie' and 'Ellis' are such similar names, I spent the entire article struggling to believe that donkeys were intelligent enough to become veterinarians. It was only on the fifth read that I got it.

So either way, donkeys are definitely more intelligent than me.

Why would a herd of 4 draft horses need a companion donkey, much less two? Can they not keep each other company on their own? I never even knew there was such a thing as a companion donkey.

/does 4 horses qualify as a herd?

More left-wing media bias. Why don't they print stories about the forest-fire hero elephants?

VictoryCabal: More left-wing media bias. Why don't they print stories about the forest-fire hero elephants?

Because they were fighting rhinos.

srewolf: Why would a herd of 4 draft horses need a companion donkey, much less two?

Because donkeys are smarter and have a better survival instinct than horses. They're also better at fighting off predators than even the biggest horse.

Donkeys and mules are fiercely loyal to their paddock pals, and make great sentries. (new window)
(can't find that vid showing a mule defending against a cougar)

Meanwhile draft horses, because of their size, are bred to be gentle giants.
Makes sense that the owners paired them up.

/never heard of a minimum herd #...

Donkeys are often used as guard animals and are definitely smarter and more ferocious than most horses, especially large draft horses. So I don't consider them "unlikely" heroes at all.

/That said, Good donkey!!! :-)

Thanks. Learn something new every day. Google search mainly reported back about guide dogs and companion animals for humans.

Shouldn't the headline read "unlikely HEROINES" ? The article specifies that the donkey was a female (or Jenny).

I have a companion donkey with our two horses. Donkeys are fun animals to have. They are like a cross between a horse and dog. Very affectionate and they love human companionship, much like a dog does. They are much smarter than horses, learning how to open gates and do other mischievous things, quicker than a horse. Mine "honks" at me when I come home from work.

Cattlemen use donkeys to protect herds against coyotes, wild dogs, snakes, etc.
