Donkeys are often used as guard animals and are definitely smarter and more ferocious than most horses, especially large draft horses. So I don't consider them "unlikely" heroes at all.

I have a companion donkey with our two horses. Donkeys are fun animals to have. They are like a cross between a horse and dog. Very affectionate and they love human companionship, much like a dog does. They are much smarter than horses, learning how to open gates and do other mischievous things, quicker than a horse. Mine "honks" at me when I come home from work.

Cattlemen use donkeys to protect herds against coyotes, wild dogs, snakes, etc.
