apoptotic: thisiszombocom: and wait, why was he at the bottom of the pool? bodies float.

Not if the lungs are full of water, they don't. At least, not immediately.

Wait, I just took a Coast Guard class on this a few weeks ago...

If the lungs fill with water, unless the person is * extremely * obese, you will become " negatively buoyant" and sink. If this happens in relatively warm water, gasses produced in the gut by decomposition will cause bloating and the body will become positively buoyant again in 24-48 hours and will float to the surface.

Here in Alaska, almost all of our water is cold enough year round to retard decomposition, so if you sink it takes much, much longer for bloat to set in. Usually the crabs, fish, and other marine critters are going to dispose of the body before any decomposition can set in.

Marshal805: He may have been a scumbag but the LAPD was way out of line beating him like they did.

King was on parole (for robbery) and driving drunk. He wouldn't pull over because he knew he'd get a DUI and go to jail. The police chased him with multiple cars and a farking helicopter for miles before they finally cornered him.

After ordering King and his two buddies to get out of the car and lie down on the ground, his friends did exactly that and were arrested WITHOUT INCIDENT. Dumbass Mr. King, on the other hand, decided to have a total mental breakdown (probably because he knew he was going to jail for a long time). After acting like a nutball and nearly getting himself SHOT when it looked like he was reaching for a gun, King got down on the ground, but then started FIGHTING THE POLICE when they moved in to cuff him (they hadn't landed a single blow to him at this point). He punched one dude in the chest and threw two other guys off of him. At this point, they thought he was on PCP, so they backed the fark off.

My dad was a sheriff's deputy in SoCal for 15 years. The scariest calls for him were the PCP calls. Dudes break their handcuffs. Dudes get shot 10 times and keep coming at you because they don't know they're dead yet. Dudes kill cops.

King refuses to cooperate and gets his ass TASED. THAT doesn't stop him.

At this point, he's fought off three grown men and a taser hasn't stopped him. It's natural to assume he's on something, and they have no idea if he's armed. They then beat his ass with batons in an attempt to subdue him. It doesn't work. Dude keeps getting up. So he got beat until he couldn't get up anymore.

I'd say the officers were A LITTLE out of line, for sure. And the riots were probably a long time coming. The LAPD had bigger issues with the public (and still does) that really led to the Rodney King Riots -- this scumbag just happened to be the match that lit the fire. It's too bad the people who'd finally had enough didn't get a more deserving martyr.

Dear Rodney King:

You were a dumbass and a feckless person with unhappy and needless weaknesses, but your dumbassery did NOT justify the beatdown you got from those four bastard cops, and I am sorry you are gone, especially as you perished in such a stupid, banal and utterly pointless manner.

You resisted the cops for a ton of totally f*cked up reasons. But you were the catalyst that shouted to the rot within our society.

The rot then paraded itself proudly for the world to see. All kinds of rot.

You were a symptom, not a cause.

The disease still goes marching merrily along to this day.

You constantly kept falling on your ass after the Riots, you dork, but at least YOU TRIED to pick yourself up out of the gutter. I pretty much think people smelled the settlement money and cheated the hell out of you.

I always took note when you and Reggie Denny showed up in the news.

I never hated you, and I never exactly liked you, but I was interested and I cared for some weird reason.

I hope you got to be pals with Reggie, at least a little.

Wherever you've gone, I hope you're OK.

Bit'O'Gristle: Um...ya...if this is what you, sharpton, and Jackson call a "symbol of civil rights" I'm thinking you should find another figurehead that wasn't such a train wreck of a person

He indeed was a symbol of civil rights. Not because of who he was, but because of what happened to him. People in those communities had been trying to tell the outside world what has been happening to them at the hands of Darryl Gates and his LAPD for years, and the videotape of King being mercilessly beaten, kicked and tased by these cops not only let LA but the whole country and the whole world know what was going on. Even white people in flyover country whose contact with black people mainly consisted of watching pro football on Sunday were aghast at what they saw.

With that realization pandora's box was opened and the LAPD's skeletons were ripped from their proverbial closets for all to see. Changes were made, people were charged, new policies were implemented and Gates was sh*tcanned (not officially of course). Police departments all over the country had a doublethink moment where they actually questioned the procedures they had been using in minority neighborhoods, and some changed theirs as a result.

So yes "Rodney King" was a symbol for civil rights in this country, even if Rodney King the man was not. His name and what happened to him and the police officers who beat him represent a fundamental turning point in police/minority relations in this country, and should be acknowledged as such.

Hmmm....As someone from "flyover country", I also seem to remember the footage of what happened to Reginald Denny. Do you remember that name?

Yes, I do. I live here, and am sorry that he was caught in the middle of all that. What happened to him is what happens to people who are in the wrong place at the wrong time, in this case in the middle of an uprising (or riot, if you will) in a major metropolitan city. He was also one of many who were hurt and even killed in the melee, most of them black I might add, and as such he has nothing to do with the larger discussion that the King beating started. He was part of the result, when it is the cause that needs to be examined, explored and explained.

If it hadn't been his beating, it would have been something else, given the conditions that existed under Chief Darryl Gates watch. It was a dangerous place to be, in a neighborhood that had always been a dangerous place to be. What was seen on the day the police were acquitted had been building for a generation or more, ignored by all who did not live there, and only needed one spark to set it off. That spark was the smiles on the faces of the cops in that courtroom, smiles which residents of that neighborhood and many others had seen on the faces of cops time and again when they got away with their crimes, mainly because there were no cameras around to record it.

What are we not discussing the causes of such animosity, rage and despair? Or could the reality of that be either too much for you or simply not part of your existence, being from "flyover country" and all? Think bigger than your own head for once, and you may have your answer. I do not condone what the people in south central LA did on that day in the slightest... but I understand.

Bit'O'Gristle: It was all to protest, not to gain anything, thats why all the looting right? right?

And of course your simple, simple mind refuses to see the larger picture. What you saw on television was the result of a much larger series of problems, social, financial, employment and societal issues spread out over decades that people like you simply seem not to be able the grasp... the "big picture", as it were. This is why what happened to King was important, and continues to be so.

How many times had what happened to him been perpetrated by the LAPD on blacks, latinos and anyone else they didn't like with no cameras around to catch the deed?

And over how many years?

And most imporatantly, how long were the people this happened to expected to put up with it?

But all you harp on is "durr, dey's lootin'" without so much a synapse devoted to understanding its causes or consequence. Even if you choose to deride the man himself, what happened to him and was recorded changed history in this country.

A mind, even one as seemingly limited as yours, is a terrible thing to waste. Stop it.

Your misuse of the word "tragic" is tragic.

If King were an otherwise accomplished person whose life was cut short due to a drug problem (e.g. Whitney Houston), that would be tragic. If King were not drunk and speeding at 80 mph and fighting off cops during his arrest prior to his beat-down, that would be tragic. If King turned his life around after receving nearly $4M of taxpayer money and did something good (e.g. spokeperson of racial awareness in the community, etc.), that would be tragic.

But the reality is that King was a do-nothing living from day to day, getting drunk and high whenever the opportunity arose, and generally making poor decisions in nearly every facet of his life. His death at the bottom of a pool is not tragic.

People who write things like this....

"Good riddance to bad rubbish. What a loser waste of human dna this scumbag was. I had 0 sympathy for him getting his ass kicked, and have less for him drowning. The gene pool just got a little cleaner....."

should be the ones at the bottom of the pool.

Why is this man bad rubbish? What did he do... get beat up while he was not resisting on the ground by 5 or 6 cops with clubs? Almost losing an eye? Being screwed up in the head (physically and mentally) a bit by the whole experience?

Lets get it straight here....He wasn't the rubbish here those cops were, just in case you could see straight. Maybe if it were your brother or cousin on the ground you have clearer vision...

I don't know all the specifics about Rodney Kings life before and after that beating from those cops.... But I watched some of that beating footage again, and saw those smug cops face laughing as they were in court. I am white and Irish and I wanted to go punch these cops after I saw that. Any decent human being would want to do the same..... For Rodney King to come out and say "Let Just Get Along" after that was basically heroic. ....HEROIC!!!!

Even if he fell a bit short in his personal life... I think the man tried to stay straight. It's sad news. I wish he lived longer and happier. It seemed that is were his life was on track to go, finally.

BTW he was a good swimmer. It does seem pretty weird that a strong swimmer would drown in a pool. I think we need to investigate this a bit more. Doesn't seem that minor a factor not to consider so early into the investigation.

Rodney King helped calm racial distress more in "Can't we all just get along" than Obama has done in three years. King, I believe, was truly embarrassed by what was done in his name and felt ashamed of what he had become.

While there are a lot of simplistic replies to his statement I attribute them to people who are too callous to even bother to look at people as individual humans with flaws and who make mistakes. Forgiveness is the cornerstone of Christianity yet there are many Christians who refuse to even consider forgiving a man his faults.

valkore: Your misuse of the word "tragic" is tragic.

I'll never understand the automatic urge to pick one side of a completely theoretical dichotomy for every single situation that pops up. Macbeth is a tragedy, and nobody feels the need to pick a side with that one. Everybody involved was an asshole. Still tragic.

Rodney King's fiancée is telling friends Rodney had been drinking all day Saturday ... and had smoked weed in the hours leading up to his death ... sources close to King tell TMZ.

According to our sources, King's fiancée, Cynthia Kelley, is telling friends King was at the house all day drinking, and he smoked marijuana at some point, before she went to went to bed at 2:00 AM.

Eh. Half the folks on this very site spent their Saturday drinking and smoking weed.

shower_in_my_socks: Marshal805: He may have been a scumbag but the LAPD was way out of line beating him like they did.

It's too bad the people who'd finally had enough didn't get a more deserving martyr.

really great, superb form. points off for length and a bitter tone with a hint of self awareness, but hats off in general.

Police in Rialto, California, received a 911 call from King's fiancee, Cynthia Kelly, about 5:25 a.m., said Capt. Randy DeAnda.

[snip]

Kelly was a juror in King's lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles in 1994.

Im not saying police brutality is right, because it certainly isnt, but the cops were playing hardball with a career criminal.

There were two guys in the car with him that were not touched because they listened to the cops. The moran took cops on a high speed chase through residential neighborhoods while drunk. Then he was difficult after they got him out of the car. The cops didn't beat him enough.

Just imagine some drunk coming down your street at 80 mph.

EatenTheSun: flypusher713: We've got our own police brutality controversy here in H-town with local dumbass Chad Holley. It's so funny that so many of the conservative law and order have no issues with the extracurricular "justice" the cops dished out a couple years ago. They also think that because the idgit just got arrested again that it should somehow vindicate those cops.

Well, he obviously didn't learn his lesson the first time.

He didn't, but it wasn't the job of the cops to teach him. Have you seen the video? He was face down, hands visible next to his head, clearly surrendering. The cops should have just cuffed him and stuffed him at that point, not kicked him.

/and he definitely needs to go to jail for this latest arrest
