Alphax: Sounds tragic. A man with poor self control, particularly when it came to drugs, and fame likely didn't help matters.

Your misuse of the word "tragic" is tragic.

If King were an otherwise accomplished person whose life was cut short due to a drug problem (e.g. Whitney Houston), that would be tragic. If King were not drunk and speeding at 80 mph and fighting off cops during his arrest prior to his beat-down, that would be tragic. If King turned his life around after receving nearly $4M of taxpayer money and did something good (e.g. spokeperson of racial awareness in the community, etc.), that would be tragic.

But the reality is that King was a do-nothing living from day to day, getting drunk and high whenever the opportunity arose, and generally making poor decisions in nearly every facet of his life. His death at the bottom of a pool is not tragic.

I'll never understand the automatic urge to pick one side of a completely theoretical dichotomy for every single situation that pops up. Macbeth is a tragedy, and nobody feels the need to pick a side with that one. Everybody involved was an asshole. Still tragic.

True, Rodney King was certainly no saint. And it doesn't bother me that he's getting mocked like anyone else would on Fark.

But with you...it's hard not to notice a pattern. What I never understand is why you won't just own it.

In the midst of looting and violence that King didn't ask for, he uttered the lines, "Can't we all just get along?" Simple and eloquent, this phrase has become part of our national lexicon and we'd be a better place if more people practiced it.

Before I got rid of my tv I watched Rodney on Celebrity Rehab. A lot of the celebs seem to be maladjusted adolescents and a-holes but Rodney was really likable. It was easy to root for him. I sure wish he was able to overcome his demons and I'm saddened by his passing.

I think Rodney said it best, when he said, "Ow...ow....ow...ow"

No, but joking aside, I too saw him on Dr. Drew and agree as others have said here, he seems like a humble man I personally would have liked to meet. It's a shame it seems his addiction got the better of him. RIP Rodney.
36 posted on Sunday, June 17, 2012 11:27:51 AM by Lucky9teen

Yes. Stranger still, it was said by a man who had no particular reason to take a stand for the system.

Watch the beating video. In your mind remove Rodney and replace him with a mule. Would such a beating be acceptable?

If not on a dumb beast, why on a human?

He stood up when it mattered. Would that we all could be so brave or forgiving.

39 posted on Sunday, June 17, 2012 11:32:57 AM by null and void

Rodney King helped calm racial distress more in "Can't we all just get along" than Obama has done in three years. King, I believe, was truly embarrassed by what was done in his name and felt ashamed of what he had become.

While there are a lot of simplistic replies to his statement I attribute them to people who are too callous to even bother to look at people as individual humans with flaws and who make mistakes. Forgiveness is the cornerstone of Christianity yet there are many Christians who refuse to even consider forgiving a man his faults.

gnadfly: You need to watch the whole 17 minutes of the tape, not just the last 30 seconds that were constantly played on CNN at the time.

Say "Hey" to Tray Tray for me.

.... and FTFA also - "Most of the nation only saw a few snippets where it's the most violent," Stone said. "They didn't see (King) get up and run at Powell."

While it's true that LAPD went overboard let's not pretend RK is all goodie two shoes! He was a farkin bank robber out on parole!
If someone like Colin Powell, Bill Cosby or Neil Degrasse Tyson gets pounded by cops than I'll even join the black community in rioting BUT the fact that they are just using ANY black person let alone someone with a criminal record as an excuse to cause chaos and rioting, beating up whie motorist and terrorizing the Korean community in LA than they are just pieces of shiat themselves.

2012-06-17 04:11:23 PM
He's no saint, but that's the point. LAPD isn't supposed to punitively beat on scumbags or saints.

gnadfly: You need to watch the whole 17 minutes of the tape, not just the last 30 seconds that were constantly played on CNN at the time.

Not relevant. At some point between 1 and 56 blows the officers became criminals. Two officers went to federal prison for 32 months.

2012-06-17 04:23:48 PM
barneyfifesbullet: Im not saying police brutality is right, because it certainly isnt, but the cops were playing hardball with a career criminal.

There were two guys in the car with him that were not touched because they listened to the cops. The moran took cops on a high speed chase through residential neighborhoods while drunk. Then he was difficult after they got him out of the car. The cops didn't beat him enough.

Just imagine some drunk coming down your street at 80 mph.

Also, there are reports that he was high on PCP. If you have ever had to deal with someone in that state, you know that you cannot just politely ask them to relax and that it takes an awful lot of force to get them under control.
