Were freeway chases the state sport of California before 1994? Or did OJ start a media trend?

I'm pretty sure there were freeway chases in California before OJ, just not low-speed ones.

We have the best chases in San Diego. We have tons of Meth and the border to Mexico. We still have the greatest chase ever, the guy that stole a tank from the National Guard armory.

I remember being at an all day party out in the woods with about 200 people; sun was out and it was a glorious day. Music was great. Then by 4 or 5 pm later arrivers had some weird story about OJ Simpson and a van. Made no sense. Did not care. Continued with the party for the remainder of the weekend.

Awww, you're too kind! How did you know? =)

Back to OJ. I was in grade school when this happened and didn't pay any attention to the news. Our teachers wheeled in a TV during class to watch the verdict. All I can remember now is talking about making t-shirts. "Starbust: The Juice is Loose". But I was a kid, so I never did anything about it.

It would only be justice if they hacked off his head in prison.

Thank God for the stupidity of the average perp. OJ beat the rap, knew that if he so much as farted in the wrong place that they'd get him and STILL he pulls a strong-arm robbery.

I remember that day - I was workin' at the grocery store. Somehow every employee was on break at the same time; store manager had to unplug the TV.

Weird thing - a surprising number of folks didn't know who OJ was. And while he was retired from football, he had been on the TV, movies, etc.

/oh the days of Al Cowlings, Judge Ito, Kato Katelin, Johnny, Marcia . . . .

Did anyone else find it odd that a gun in a tank was taken out by a single cop with a handgun? I mean, aren't you supposed to need RPGs or sticky bombs or something? Of course, it probably helps if you actually lock the hatch.

I flew into LAX that hour as the chase went up the 405 freeway. People told me what was going on "OJ is being chased up the 405" and all I could think of was that I was farked trafficwise. One thing I either never knew, or just forgot, was that this chase lasted 5 farking hours? And how hard would it have been for the police to box in that Bronco and stop it hours before? I also did not know that the streets were lined with people for blocks around his house.

Yep. He's currently an inmate in Lovelock Correctional Center. On December 5, 2008 he was sentenced to 33 years, with a possibily of parole after 9 years.

Somehow I have a feeling he won't be granted parole.

Speaking of your attitude........... What I remember of the verdict being handed down, was black folk being quiet, and saying 'well, white folks are gonna be mad, and will have their revenge - it won't be in a riot.' What I remember was that OJ had to be on his best behavior, because anything white folks could pop him for, he would be popped for, no matter how ridiculous, and he would be given a maximum sentence for it. No matter what it was.

OJ was stupid because he still believed white folk loved him, and that he was an honorary white, just because his close circle of yes-folk and too-rich-to-bother-with-middle-and-lower-class-white-folk-think white folk still hung around him and golfed with him and spoke up for him. And white groupies still threw themselves at him, Jordan style.

OJ probably still believes white folk love him. He's been in the delusion too long.

It makes for an interesting story about Jason doing it and not OJ.

It could explain how blithe he was in the years after the fact.

But I wonder why it's something Fred Goldman never explored.

Except OJ didn't get a max sentence for this. He got 9 years minimum, where the state was looking for 18 minimum.

Nope, he got 33 years, with a possibility of parole after 9 years, and there's no guarantee he'll be granted parole.
