downpaymentblues: You give Glenn Beck WAY too much credit. He has a minimal effect on a small group of very far right wing people. He foments anger for profit, nothing more. He has no effect on my day to day life, or the world around me.

The world is a big place, and Glenn Beck hasn't affected your day-to-day life or the world around you because he hasn't set his sights on it. On the other hand, if you are unfortunate enough to be a sociology professor of a small school in NY, that small group of very far right wing people Beck has control of may start seriously considering murdering you.

Glenn Beck is small, and he has small ideas and a small number of small-minded people listen to him. All of that is true. But all it takes is one small bullet in a small gun in someone's small hand to make all of that very important to your day-to-day life or the world around you. The smallness of it does not excuse it.

Does anyone else get the impression that he's being paid under the table by Fox for this crap?

I mean, he comes out and says the show is extremely well-done (a blatant plug) while decrying it as "anti-values" (generating controversy to get people talking about it and increase popularity). Take notes, people; this is some master-level trolling.

Also, I think he's calling it the Oedipus Project because it will be so bad you'll want to gouge your own eyes out.

To be fair, for once, instead of whining about it, he has expressed admiration and a desire to do something constructive of his own. I think his belief that he can produce and acceptable TV comedy/musical show goes way past the far northern borders of delusional, but hell - let him try.

So, his "virtuous" show is named after a story where the primary themes are murder and incest?

Glenn Beck continues trolling people by feeding the homeless. You know, he actually seems to be trying.

GODWIN ALERT!!!

And Hitler built the Autobahn.

Beck's bread and butter is fomenting fear and hate on a daily bases. It's nice that he fed some homeless people, but that by no means justifies what he does on a daily basis that allows him to be altruistic every once and a while.

HGS' TWO LAWS OF PUNDITRY

1. No matter how insane, ridiculous or cockamamie a politically-fueled statement may be, there will always be at least a handfull of rubes out there who will consider it gospel truth.

2. These rubes have disposable income.

No, we play "peekaboo" because it takes advantage of their inability to comprehend object permanence, not to teach it to them. They will grasp the concept all on their own in a few months.

In the meanwhile, we have an easy way to entertain our children.

Good. I can hardly wait to see what a conservative, pro-bullying, anti-gay, abstinence promoting teen musical drama looks like. More than that, I'm curious as to how well it would do, ratings-wise.

It's certainly not my cup of tea but if that's what folks want to watch then be my guest. Believe it or not, there is room for more than one viewpoint on television.

I'm convinced he's trolling. I used to listen to him when he was on 970 out of Tampa and while he was conservative, he was always reasonable and actually put on a great show because he didn't take himself too seriously. He was great at incorporating morning radio style bits with political drive time talk, and one of the bits that he'd regularly do is something he called "The Schlub Club." Basically, in the first hour of his show, he'd set up some kind of IRL trolling scenario where he'd take some absurd position on an issue and tell the people who were listening then to call in and carry on the bit. Then, when he hit the drive time hour, he'd go into the troll, people would call in who were in on it, everybody who got in their cars to head home had no idea that it was the Schlub Club, they'd think it was serious and call in completely outraged and Beck was excellent at keeping it going without breaking character, laughing, or giving any hint at all that he and some of his listeners were trolling the rest of his audience. It was always a hilarious bit of broadcasting and one of the things that made his show so great.

I think that somewhere along the line he realized that there was a ton of money to be made from never breaking character and just spouting the nuttiest stuff he could think of, and I suspect that he's just waiting for someone to figure out a way to call him on it.

Okay, you're a goddamned idiot. Just because you ignore the existence of something that annoys you does not mean it magically stops existing. That is why we teach our children the game of peekaboo so they learn their parents don't stop existing when they close their eyes. You are only contributing to the problem by making that argument so do not make it again.

You're right about the closet homo part, though.

If the mere existence of a thing annoys you, you need help. I'm no fan of Glee, and never understood the adulation it gets, but nobody makes me watch it. In fact, I get along just fine without doing so.

Times have changed. Thanks to the ACLU, we can't confine them against their will, and thanks to Reagan, there's no place to put them or money to care for them.

"We jokingly call this our Oedipus project because the left will be making out with me ... and they'll have no idea."

This is a very...odd statement. Ummm, hey, Glenn, Oedipus was a fictional character who killed his father and farked his mother. His end was a tragic downfall of despair and fail. On second thought, I'm guessing your "project" is very aptly named. I'm not even sure what to make of the making out with liberals part.
