Tell me this is satire.

However, union representatives fear the increase in working hours is simply a result of people who are already overworked working even more

Yes, subby, America is turning into a third-world country.

Now let's talk about how Unions are the cause of all our problems.

I assume the 26 hours figure comes from including unemployed people and/or people choosing not to work, so they're certainly not collecting a full-time paycheque.

This seems to imply that the average Swedish worker actually averages about 31 hours per week once holidays and vacation is corrected for (compared to 34 in Canada and 35 in the U.S.).

that's exactly what the article is saying. it's an average. most swedes work monday to friday, just like us. they just get a farkload more vacation, just as the rest of the civilized world does.

No, that's not what the article is saying. If they were simply accounting for vacation and holiday time, they'd come up with a number of about 31 hours average. To get 26 hours, they must be counting unemployed people in the average.

How dare another country do things differently!
No wonder they are a third world country.

I bet they just stare at their desk for an hour, so it looks like they are working. I'd probably say in a given week that they do about 15 minutes of real, actual, work.

Define a full time paycheck. If I'm in France, it's what, 35 hours per week?

How does the hourly rate compare between the US and Sweden? Are they making the same amount of money the we are, or is is that many hour of wages less per week/year?

No debate there, it also should be said that most Norskies can't cook to save their lives. Norwegian cuisine isn't food; it's a slightly better alternative to freezing to death.

I don't know about Sweden or France - but I work in Ireland and I can tell you it's really hard to answer that question fairly.

There is such a variance, even in the United States between the income, cost of living, and hourly expectations. I worked as a consultant in Chicago where 45 hours per week was absolutely required. I was also worked in a small suburb and probably logged closer to 35 (with plenty of that spent on youTube).

And then, it's really hard to accurately compare wages. You've got entirely different tax systems - so pre-tax amounts are meaningless (but it's really hard to understand a tax system until you are in it, IE after you accept a position). And it's not just income tax either - in the US I paid a significant amount of property tax. In Ireland (currently) I would pay no property tax. Both countries have sales tax, but the amounts vary significantly.

If that all wasn't bad enough - the currencies fluctuate constantly too. When I took my job here, 1 euro was worth 1.44 USD - now it's worth 1.26 USD. On paper, compared to my US counterpart - I'm earning a lot less now than I was 9 months ago. But my income to spending ratio has been largely unaffected.

Benefits and pensions are difficult to compare; same with healthcare. In the US I was paying a few hundred dollars for insurance each month - and that came out of my paycheck pre-tax. Now, the cost of my insurance is included with my employement - so I don't see any money come off of my expected pay amount. In the US - a 5% match for a 401k seemed to be the best I could ever find....but here they do a 15% contribution to a similar retirement scheme and that seems to be the norm.

I've spent a lot of time trying to decide if I make more money here or in the US - and I'm really not sure. I guess that means it must be pretty close to being equal? I do enjoy the extra vacation time though.

No, they're not all hot, but you probably won't find as many overweight women or those fully synthetic ones, with plastic lips, boobs etc, as you might find in the US, or, as I have recently noticed, in Germany.
My favorite place in Scandinavia is Norway, though. The people are great, the country is beautiful and wide open.
I found the women there to be the most gorgeous in Euroland. If you're into fake everything and several layers of make-up, you might be disappoint.

THIS
Move from job to another job, you will have to start accruing vacation all over again. In any other country - it still carries over to your new job. The US has absolutely NO mandatory vacation requirements.

I need to spend a week focused on doing my work-like activities and clock how much time I actually spend working. I know I do far less than 40, but I think it's more than 20.

And are we including time commuting when we're comparing hours worked? I don't know what the average European work commute is like, but in the USA we've relegated ourselves to 45 minutes each way in packed traffic because we all live in the wrong place and go to work for the same hours.

/What takes 45 minutes during rush hour takes 15 minutes at noon.

I've been there and there were a lot of pretty girls. The thing that stood out for me is that they were everywhere. I live in Chicago and downtown in the summer you'll see plenty of pretty girls and more homely girls in poorer out of the way places. That's was also my experience in France and Germany. Paris and Berlin had lots of pretty girls. Back country France and Germany, not so much.

In Sweden that didn't seem to matter. I could into a gas station in the country and there would be a cute girl at the register and others wandering the aisles. I'm assuming that when the Vikings stole women from around the world that it raised their average.

Just think of all the taxes they have to pay. Their lives may be great, but they have no control over themselves. They are all wards of the state.

Among Scandinavian women, the Norwegians and Finns seem to be more attractive on average than Danes and Swedes. Of course, it probably isn't right to generalize, but that's been my personal experience.

I used to live in Sweden - it's all true, they are ridiculously hot but by comparison my average American mug got only moderate attention. The one smart thing I did however was bring my girlfriend over for a 3 week vacation. Best decision ever, she saw the competition and once she got back to the states it was all gym/tanning/healthy eating. Once I got home she had gone from cute to stunner. She even adopted the Swedish girls style which is to say: very little clothing regardless of the weather. The only real downside was paying 60% of my paycheck for taxes that rarely benefited me. And the Swedish state run liquor stores blow.
