worthlessjuan: I don't know what you people are talking about . . . chewing on a 2X4. If you want pine resin, try Retsina, a Greek wine for the acquired taste. I love it, others literally gag.

Retsina very cold and with the right food (marinated and grilled seafood or fish) is good, but yeah, it's an acquired taste.

So is a good Chardonnay. The problems with Chardonnay have less to do with the grape itself than with the industry. Because the grapes are relatively easy to grow, Chardonnay gets planted everywhere - sometimes even supplanting traditional grapes from that region. And because it's relatively easy to grow, it's attractive to growers focused on inexpensive, bulk production, who tend to do other things cheaply as well - like machine-harvesting (hand harvesting is better because only ripe grapes are picked), throwing in buckets of oak chips to cover flaws, etc. Well-made Chardonnays are great. I prefer Chablis-style (Chablis itself being out of my everyday-wine budget.)

Unfortunately within the $12-17 range, what I'll usually spend on an everyday wine, there are more reliable options - German Rieslings, Italian Pinot Grigios, New Zealand Sauvignion Blancs, etc. Chile makes good Chardonnays in that range.

Rigt now it's hot and humid and I'm drinking a glass of Vino Verde. Perfect for the occasion, Portugal's playing in the Euro cup, and it's $8 a bottle, which is about as cheap as wine gets in Ontario. Good times.
