You kind of have to feel sorry for anyone who is sitting out there suddenly inspired because Mark Wahlberg decided to have his PA graduate high school for him.

Hopefully he gets high marky marks.

Not the most noble if inspirational sources, to be sure, but if it works then I find it hard to complain.

I can see why he'd complete the degree online. The last time he was in a public highschool in the northeast he ended up running from the wind in a panic.

I would be really farking bitter if I had to watch the little shiat that blinded me become rich and famous for his awful music and washboard abs. According to his wiki, Marky Mark only served 45 days for the assault and he has, apparently, forgiven himself for being a violent, racist prick. So that's nice.

* reads up on that assault on Wikipedia *

I would have more respect for him if he actually paid that Vietnamese guy (or his family, if he's dead) a hefty financial settlement...

/ maybe he did, and the internets don't reflect that

Part of me wishes he went to a public high school, and that it was filmed. Could've made a good Comedy/Documentary out of it.

No, that's what would be happening if, say, one of the kids from Step By Step needed to get their diploma.

Marky Mark is enough of a success that he doesn't need to make it into a reality show.

FTFA: "I quit kind of during the ninth grade," Wahlberg told David Letterman of schooling in his teen years (watch his full "Late Show" appearance below).

The "Contraband" star will use a new Web-based program in Massachusetts to earn an actual diploma (as opposed to the popular GED equivalent), and transfer the existing credits he earned.

"They're going to give me whatever credits I already have, which is probably like one or two," he joked.

Actually, if he quit during the ninth grade and didn't complete any courses during that year, then he's not joking. In fact, in the school system I came up through, he would have zero credits, because they don't start counting towards graduation until the ninth grade.

I was wondering what's the bleedin' point? He doesn't need a diploma - he'll always be in work and even if somehow he's not he should have enough money to last several hundred lifetimes.

Maybe he just wants to be educated? From what I've heard, a US high school diploma is not an education. It just proves you can pass some arbitrary exams.

The best way to become educated is to be curious and read.

Mark does a lot of community work and this, perhaps token, gesture is a way of giving kids on the edge a bump in the right direction.

For those of us who have led relatively sheltered lives, this doesn't amount to much, but for kids who are growing up without fathers and without proper role models, this sort of thing is very important and influential. He's not saying, The degree is the difference between eating and not eating for me. Hes saying, A diploma is important enough that I will go back to get one.

If that encourages one kid to stay in school instead of going out and becoming a gangbanger, then it is worth it.

Really, no one else has said it.

He is only going back for the hot teacher sex that is up for grabs. He wanted to give the teachers a legal choice for a change.

I think it's partly that and partly that he has kids of his own and wants them to finish school. When one of them says to him "why should I finish high school, you didn't and you turned out fine!", replying that it's important enough that he went back to do it is a better answer than "because I said so".

I quit high school and never received my diploma. I earned my GED, went to university, and now have a good career. But every once in a while it sort of haunts me that I never earned a diploma, and is certainly my biggest regret in life. One of those holes that looms over you.

I'm with TimeWaste.
Got my GED at 24 after I owned a home and my own business. My score was top 10% in the nation and I was flown to DC for some sort of I don't even know what to show that the GED programs are successful. Still feel stigmatized (doing it to myself, I know), and full of regret.
Stay in school, kids! And stay off of my lawn.
