mrjones61: david_gaithersburg: On June 15th, 2012 the president of the U.S. told the unemployed youth of America go to hell. We shall never forget that day.

If the unemployed youth of America can't compete with people who are less familiar with our culture and language, then good, let them be unemployed. Here's a hint for you, the President doesn't get you hired, you do, it's your responsibility. If you can't find work don't go around blaming other people, do what everyone else in the world has to do and keep looking. That's life, it's tough sometimes, but if you wait for someone else to fix it for you your gonna spend your whole life waiting.

This is along the lines with every discussion I have had with workmates about this topic. It goes like this.

Them : They are taking our jobs.

Me : I've never lost a job opportunity because they hired an illegal, what jobs are you talking about?

Them : Minimum wage jobs, the ones our teenagers would get. Like in a fast food place.

Me : If it's minimum wage, then you are saying they are getting beat in the fair competition for a job because they are not the best worker - since the employer is paying the same wage anyway. Minimum wage.

Them : No, I am talking about the places that are paying under the table and they are getting undercut.

Me : Then shouldn't we be coming down hard on businesses not following the minimum wage rules instead of the people who are so desperate that they will take a fraction of a fair salary? I don't understand the argument of 'They will work harder for less money so we have to kick them OUT so my kid will have a chance to work only as hard as he wants to.'

dognose4: Sounds like human trafficking. The girl is probably better off with ICE than with whomever was moving her.

Which may be why no one they picked up with her will admit to knowing who she is or where she's from, figuring that even if she ends up in the US foster care system she'll be better off than either the situation she was rescued from or the one she'd be sent back to.

dericwater: If you want to play the "illegal is illegal" game, then I say we should start with the most important and relevant group of illegals, the GOP. Arrest them all for treason, try them, and hang them. Start with the previous administration for starting an illegal war, war crimes, illegal search and seizure, outing CIA field agents. Then go after Boehner, McConnell, Cantor, Kyl, Gingrich, Luntz, Norquist, Ryan for attempting to destroy the current administration by gutting the functions of the government and driving the country into internal collapse (which is treason). Then go after the banksters. Then go after the war profiteers.

There's a priority list of who to go after. Some 12 year old kid who can't speak his "home" country's language is on the order of a jaywalker, compared to the real hoodlums.

If YOU want to play the "illegal is illegal" game then we also need to arrest Barry for starting an illegal war in Libya, continued war crimes in Afghanistan, illegally violating the Constitution's Due Process clause by murdering US citizens with drone missiles without trial, etc.

Those who outed Valerie Plame were indicted and tried.

Just because you disagree with something doesn't make it illegal, Mr. Internetlawyer. You read something somewhere - woo hoo. Congratulations. But most of what you cited has already been reviewed by the Supreme Court, declared legal, which means it is, de facto, and regardless of your tinfoil-hat-wearing beliefs, legal.

Arizona already punishes employers for hiring illegal and undocumented workers, but the federal government tried to challenge its right to do even that.

Let's not pretend that Obama did this for any other reason than worry about his chances of being reelected. Sure, he campaigned on not breaking up families during the last election season, but once in office he deported more illegals than Bush ever did.

President Obama came into office with strong Latino support, having won two-thirds of the Latino vote, according to exit polls. But for some, that support has turned to disillusionment.

"There's a deep sense of betrayal and disappointment towards the Obama administration," said Sarahi Uribe, coordinator of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.

Indeed, the latest Gallup poll shows his support among Latino voters has fallen to 48 percent, a new low.

Obama could have issued this executive order at any time over the previous four years. The fact that he only does so when his reelection is looking chancy tells you all you need to know about where his heart is.

Obama made specific promises to the Latino community over and over and didn't work to keep them.

Did you ever wonder why Charlie Brown kept charging at the football, despite the fact that Lucy always pulled it away and he wound up flat on his back? You would think that experience has made him skeptical. It's because he really wanted to believe that, this time, things would work out. And when you really want to believe in something, you have a short memory when it comes to past disappointments.

That's how it is with many Latinos and other immigration reform advocates. They want President Obama to become the person they voted for -- who promised Latinos that he would fix a broken immigration system, stop dividing families, and push through Congress a Dream Act-like legislation that would give undocumented young people a pathway to legal status if they go to college or join the military.

None of that happened, and so Latinos -- who, in 2008, voted overwhelmingly for Obama -- are ambivalent about the president's re-election.

Maybe if he hadn't used up quite so much energy implementing the Health Care plan his wealthy buddies in the insurance, pharmaceutical, and medical industries wanted, he might have had some time to spend worrying about keeping his promises to the people who elected him.

What I find most ironic about these economic based anti-immigration arguments is that they fail to realize that we have an economy that in part needs people that will do difficult jobs for low compensation. Look at what happened in Alabama. They came down hard on immigrants, many of them left the state, and suddenly there were no workers to harvest the crops. Alabama lost millions of dollars in rotting crops which meant lost tax revenue and higher prices at the grocery store. If only the unemployed youth of Alabama could have gotten off their lazy butts and done an honest days work, but alas apparently only immigrants are willing to do that.

Funny how Arpaio hasn't been found guilty to actually have broken any laws. He's only trying to keep out people who are in his state illegally. Is there any proof that he's harassed anyone who's legally here?

He's an elected official isn't he? If he's so horrible, why hasn't he been voted out? Seems he's survived three elections, and not one of them was really close. Hell, they couldn't even get enough signatures for a recall vote in '07 (I guess they needed more union goons down there).

Sounds to me like a bunch of entitled whiners, in Che' t-shirts, complaining about someone who actually follows the rule of law. Convict the man, and then you can play your bongos and sing hateful songs about him.

NotMyAmrfis: Shadowtag: I still don't get arresting the kid tho. Taking her into custody, which would be the ONLY response to the situation, is not the same as being arrested and charged. Mostly I question the language of the article.

Admittedly, it has been awhile since I've brushed up on the US Enforcement system; but being taken into custody by an officer of the law (deprived of liberty) is the definition of an arrest. It doesn't say that she has been charged, and it specifically mentions that all of the other suspects were booked into the jail. I doubt she was free to leave, therefore she was in custody of the MCSO = arrest.

I would imagine that when they turn her over to ICE, she will be assigned a caseworker, or some sort of children's advocate (I don't know the internal ICE process). Yes, there are horror stories, but for the most part the people working in those positions are there to provide answers and assistance for victims of human trafficking.

(Apologies if this has been mentioned, but I don't think I have enough masochistic tendencies to read through another 2 pages of comments in an immigration thread.)

It has not really been mentioned. This whole thread has turned into a converstion about Obama immigration policies. It is common sense for the sheriff to detain a young child who is in the country illegally and travelling with strangers from another country. I think we are the only ones who read the farking article. Nice to know I/m not alone.

That's actually not true. There's a whole huge gulf of difference between "Sir, I'm going to detain you in handcuffs," and "Sir, you are under arrest for the crime of..." The second you're placed under arrest, you must be given your rights advice (aka "Miranda"), given access to a lawyer, transported to a holding facility, and appear in front of a magistrate within 24 hours. However, I can detain you, in handcuffs, for "officer safety" with none of those requirements in place.

However, I would suspect that with the hacks working in news these days, the author doesn't understand the significance, and went with the assumption that custody=arrest.

That only reinforces the idea that immigration done properly has value to it. If you're just going to be lazy and not go through the proper procedure, there's always Europe and its metric farkton of illegals. Arizona is being too kind even for Arpaio and those in Arizona who favor strong enforcement.

The only things to scrap would be all the guest worker programs. They have no purpose outside of making things worse for citizens. Shame that AZEIR, a pro-amnesty employer group, had Utah enact such a program that bypasses citizens.

No. The European colonists settled in a continent that had recently been largely depopulated by a series of epidemics. There were no political entities with laws controlling who could, or could not, settle along the Eastern shore.

shotglasss: eraser8: shotglasss: When is Obammy going to stop the pandering and start trying to fix the economy?

Agreed.

When will the president actually do what's good for the country and the economy and stop trying to implement Republican solutions.

If Mr. Obama's presidency has taught us anything, it is that Republican policies DO. NOT. WORK.

What Republican solutions is Obammster trying to implement?

Lower taxes? No.
Secure borders? No.
Smaller government? No. (Although the pubs haven't shown that they are adept at that, either.)
Adherence to the law and Constitution? No.
Strong economy? No.
Transparency in government? No.
Strong military? No.
National security? No.

If Obama's regime has taught us anything, it's that you can't put a Marxist in the White House and expect anything other than Marxist policies to be rammed down America's throats.

The free trade agreements that allowed the 1% to move the jobs out of America without paying any sort of financial penalty (as they would have in the past) were completely bipartisan.

Obama pretended to oppose this when he was running for office, but is even now negotiating to give corporations even more power through these sorts of agreements.

A critical document from President Barack Obama's free trade negotiations with eight Pacific nations was leaked online early Wednesday morning, revealing that the administration intends to bestow radical new political powers upon multinational corporations, contradicting prior promises.

The leaked document has been posted on the website of Citizens Trade Campaign, a long-time critic of the administration's trade objectives. The new leak follows substantial controversy surrounding the secrecy of the talks, in which some members of Congress have complained they are not being given the same access to trade documents that corporate officials receive.

"The outrageous stuff in this leaked text may well be why U.S. trade officials have been so extremely secretive about these past two years of [trade] negotiations," said Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch in a written statement.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has been so incensed by the lack of access as to introduce legislation requiring further disclosure. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has gone so far as to leak a separate document from the talks on his website. Other Senators are considering writing a letter to Ron Kirk, the top trade negotiator under Obama, demanding more disclosure.

Radical new powers for Corporations? Just what we need.

Stop pretending the problem is just with the right. Both political parties have been selling us out for some time now.

Bullshiat. Our immigration system is farked up. It takes way too long and way too much money ($10,000+ per person, easily) to become a citizen. All our system does is make it unnecessarily difficult. It's government reinforced xenophiba. We all came from elsewhere yet so many want to keep this stolen land for ourselves. So many want deny others the chance that our ancestors had, the very chance that led to them being here at all. It's nothing more than another, "I got mine, fark you."

It's shameful how far we've fallen as a nation.

Clyde_Suckfinger: Funny how Arpaio hasn't been found guilty to actually have broken any laws.

How can I tell you don't live in Phoenix AZ?

You people really need to read not only "Phoenix New Times" but also the "Arizona Republic". Go into their archive and put in Arpaio's name into the search engine. Read the articles and be enlighten.

BTW Sheriff "Nickle Bag" Joe Apaio didn't care about the illegals until the last election.
BTW the nickname was given to Joe by his formal law enforcement officers. He was called that because Joe would only do the minimum.
BTW when questioned about Sheriff Joe's involvement in the "French Connection". People who were really involved in that case answered back, who's Joe Apaio?
BTW Sheriff Joe doesn't care about the sexually molested children in El Mirage.

"Reza was arrested by Arpaio's deputies twice in 2010, including once for simply standing across the street from the sheriff's news conference."

Department of Justice Lawsuit Against Arpaio Sends Strong Message

"In October 2009, the Department of Homeland Security removed the authority of Arpaio's 160 federally trained deputies to make immigration arrests in the field. Despite the actions of the Department of Homeland Security, Arpaio has maintained that he will still pursue illegal aliens under Arizona state law.[57] As of 2012 he continues to do so.[58]"

Just because this is a matter of "not liking what you like," as the meme goes, doesn't mean the guy is guilty.

Notice that mentions a "golden door". Those that come in legally via the door are indeed welcome. It's the ones that sneak in through the window that I don't like.

THIS. We should not let the illegals with unknown health status, vaccination records, and criminal histories cut in line ahead of legal immigrants. The legal immigration process would be fairer, run much smoother, and cheaper if the illegals were not clogging up our system.

You do know that at the time this was written, the sum total of the hoops to jump through were... what's your name? and where are you from? ...Right?

An ongoing investigation is ongoing, asshat. That any law enforcement officer let alone a sheriff has multiple ongoing criminal investigations against him might send up a red flag for most people...
Not anything to do with like or dislike at all.

Regardless of the time or the extent of the screening, we didn't allow citizens of other countries write our rules.

If that's your standard, isn't it OK to ask immigration status of suspects when they are being investigated?

Sounds like subby just had his shipment of preteen sex slaves intercepted. Poor guy. Sorry that law enforcement is, well, enforcing the law like that.
