Tabb?

another headline where subby's attempt to sound clever fails miserably upon the realization that subby is in over their head.

it's 'Tab' subby, and it's still sold today in most major supermarkets. You don't have to order it online or travel to some obscure locale to purchase it. it is still readily available.

not at all. but I have family and friends that keep it on hand but not as some novelty beverage of a bygone day, it's a soda staple in the house just as you would have Coke, Sprite, ginger ale, or root beer on hand.

point is, subby bombed at trying to be clever and funny and then doubled-down on that failure by not even spelling the name correctly. it's three letters...how do you mess that up?

I have 4 24 packs of Tab in the fridge right now. It's the only diet soda in my area that uses saccharin instead of aspartame.

Stoli. No aftertaste at all, but that may be due to my 50/50 blend though

It does. I had a biatch of a lab rat infestation before I started drinking that.

Seriously though, that has largely been debunked. FDA reversed their stance on it a few years ago and declared it safe. It gives rats cancer, but only in massive quantities and apparently only rats have this problem because of their blood pH or some such shiat.

It's a Coke product. Coke still makes it because enough people prefer the taste of Tab over Diet Coke or Coke Zero.

Me? I wouldn't bother. Diet colas taste like shiat, and don't save you all that many calories in the long run. The trade-off of 100 calories (the approximate difference from regular cola) versus drinking an artificial sweetener (which tastes nasty and has a bad 'mouth feel') is worth just drinking less soda or skipping a dessert, in my book.

I drink Coke, I drink Pepsi, and I drink RC. I go all ways. I'm pansodasual.

ZeroCorpse It's a Coke product. Coke still makes it because enough people prefer the taste of Tab over Diet Coke or Coke Zero.

Well, not entirely, but, for anyone who cares:

- Tab has been a tremendous commercial success.

- Tab was created to help Diet Coke steal market share from Diet Pepsi. It worked incredibly well. Diet Pepsi was once a huge threat to Coke, but before long Diet Coke was #1 and Tab was #2 in diet soda.

- Retaining Tab helps Coke fill up supermarket shelf real estate and crowd out competitors. Stores get discounts based on volume by distributor, not product (to oversimplify). This is also why Coke flirts with and changes the availability of so many varieties of Diet Coke. (The various Diet Coke with Splenda flavors are the best, seriously, and Coke carefully keeps them in demand by undersupplying them.)

This real estate principle is also why two or three companies make 50+ brands of laundry detergent that are basically all the same. In case you've ever wondered. Almost no one buys Zep. When you're at the store wondering who buys Zep, it's no one. Doesn't matter. It doesn't go bad sitting on the shelf, and it crowds out a competitor's product just by being there.

You're right -- well, it was introduced shortly before Diet Pepsi, almost twenty years before Diet Coke -- and I was inaccurate. I should have said: Tab was used to help Coke steal market share from Diet Pepsi.

In the 70s, Tab and Diet Pepsi were one and two. By the mid-80s, if memory serves, Diet Coke and Tab were one and two, and Diet Pepsi was three.

My main point is that having multiple brands in the same market share can still lead to a win for the parent company.

Works in the beer world as well. We sell our package beer in six packs, cases of six packs, 24pack cases, and 22ounce bombers.

Fills up relestate on the shelves and puts the product in the customers eyes.

Splenda tastes like shiat, and I will never, ever trust it. People who drink tons of Splenda are going to regret it some day. Either way, it has an awful aftertaste. I'll just stick with sugar, thanks. I'll settle for HFCS, but only because bottlers don't give us much of a choice.

2012-06-17 07:53:55 PM
It's probably the sweetness level or other flavor changes that you detect, not the Splenda, but it could be the Splenda. Diet sodas aren't formulated to taste like regular soda, and probably Diet Coke with Splenda isn't intended to taste like Diet Coke with aspartame, even. They want to train consumers to very specific preferences.

Sucralose is far less toxic than HFCS, though, almost certainly.

(And, yes, before someone gets all hysterical, the toxicity of HFCS is not a myth. Recent interest in the dangers of excess sugar, and especially fructose, aside, at least three peer-reviewed studies in the last ten years have shown specific chemical pathways by which the fructose concentration of either major type of HFCS causes liver damage and, in at least some people, also damages the kidneys and pancreas. Not widely reported in the MSM, go figure, but you can probably just google it out of JAMA and the Lancet.)
