My problem with Nickleback is that they used to be on the same label with Type O Negative. While Type O got little to no support from the label they pushed freakin' Nickleback to the moon.

Do we all still agree Creed sucks?

Asplenium: And as for Gotye... I've only heard that one overplayed song

Asplenium: I think Chad Kroeger's biatching and moaning is a big reason why they are hated more than other equally low-caliber bands. He's got a long record of complaining that people don't like them and doesn't he doesn't stop, but it sounds like he's given up and just accepted that Nickleback is a hated band.

I'm ashamed they're from Canada... (Sorry USers)

What a coincidence. I'm happy they're not from the US!

fusillade762: J. Frank Parnell: I've always hated them, but i hate all generic pop. What confuses me are the people who are into generic pop music, and treat Nickelback like they're different somehow. Maybe they're just hopping on the hater bandwagon, because it seems popular?

I'm a total sucker for generic pop music (Katy Perry, K$sha, even that "Call Me Maybe" song). I just can't stand bands with singers who sound like they're trying to take a massive dump when they sing.

so, what's your opinion on Cinderella, then?

/singer sounds like he's always taking a dump

buwolverine: browntimmy: kroonermanblack: Anyone honestly explain the hate people seem to have for Nickleback?

The level of hate is proportional to their popularity.

It's the same with Twilight. For instance, let's say you're a NASCAR fan. Now let's say someone starts a Pretty Pretty Princess Racing League. Your first reaction would be, "Well that's stupid, but oh well, it'll never catch on." But then it does start catching on, and soon you start seeing articles written about it in your favorite Racing Today magazine. Then your reaction is, "What the hell? People actually care about this crap?." And then not long after that, Pretty Pretty Princess Racing is now on the cover of your magazines and is the first thing the media talks about it whenever they mention racing news. That's when your reaction becomes, "This is the worst thing in the world."

But I don't think Nickleback is the number one thing killing rock music. That would be old fat white Conservatives still embracing it, which immediately turns off younger generations. Ever seen that Huckabee show on Fox News where he tries to "rock out" with his musical guests?

NASCAR is the Nickelback of racing.

I'm thinking more like autocross is the Nickelback of racing. 90 Seconds of action after 2 hours of sitting around. Kinda like premature ejaculation. Nickelback is to rock as premature ejaculation is to sex.

You don't win awards because you suck total ass. You can have the "sell lots of records" awards which are worth more money and just have to live with yourselves being suckass millionaires.

Pistoffradish: He's probably got a point. As with sitcoms and movies, tastes differ widely and it becomes difficult to measure the quality of a body of work objectively.

Take Metallica, for example. Most agree that they really began hitting their stride somewhere between the black album and Load, but give another listen to their earlier albums and you'll find there's actually some quality material in there. And really, hair metal in general is a forgotten genre soon to be unearthed by a whole new generation thanks to the movie Rock of Ages, who are about to discover and elevate previously unappreciated bands such as Slaughter and Quiet Riot much as we did with The Who after hearing CSI's opening theme.

The price of being ahead of your time is that nobody really appreciates you at the moment. What great artists got left by the wayside when we were letting ourselves succumb to Beatlemania? Yeah, there's a lot of glitz and glamor to modern rock acts like Godsmack or Radiohead and unfortunately it tends to lead critics to allow all music only a surface-shallow listen, which can miss the musical nuances and lyrical subtleties a band like Nickelback has to offer especially in the context of the ongoing loudness war.

5/10. You got points for effort, and you have potential, but you revealed your troll way too early.

I can't say that I even remember what they sound(ed) like.

My problem with Nickelback isn't that they're bad; it's that, like so many other musicians, they are painfully mediocre. If they were bad, I could deal with it. It's just this painful averageness of there sound that irks, because there may actually be real musical talent within the band; it's just wasted on mediocrity.

They're just generic rock. They're the taupe of music. They don't stand out to me as either amazing or horrible. I treat their music like I treat all pop music; like a piece of gum. A disposable commodity to be chewed on for a week or two then dropped and probably not picked up again.

At least you don't hear their shiat played 4000000 times in the daily Cumulus/Clearchannel 'new!fresh!variety!' mix stations.

I was with you until the bolded part. Nickelback is generic, but their more annoying aspect is how overplayed they are.

Frankly, there's much worse out there that also gets overplayed.

I know you're trolling, but I can see this actually happening. I kind of think Nickelback would be a Quiet Riot or Warrant-esque band had Grunge not come along.

Really? Most of their songs are too foul mouthed to even get airplay around Detroit.

Nickelback > Black Eyed Peas. But that's like saying one retard drooled better than another.

ontariolightning: Could be worse Chad, you could be lead singer for one of the greatest Canadian bands (Tragically Hip) of all time and still not be known by the rest of the world.

Years ago, Gord gave an interview in which he talked about American label reps asking him to stop the frenetic movements and write "more accessible" lyrics. Apparently, they just couldn't see an American audience sing along with the words "we live to survive our paradoxes".

/except for in NYC, Detroit & Chicago, where most of their audiences were 3/4 Canadian ex-pats

Why do they always do this? The bands people like are the ones that are different and unique, those are the bands with longevity. Well it doesn't matter any more, the record industry is dying and more artists are independent thanks to the internet.

It's all about marketing to the lowest common denominator.

There's a Canuckian band called Big Sugar, and leader Gordie Johnson (all Canadian groups are led by guys named Gord, btw) had a similar story. They had a song about Alberta called All Hell for a Basement, and Toronto label execs were pushing him to make the song about Ontario so it would sell in bigger numbers. When he tried to explain that the title came from a Rudyard Kipling quote, he was met with blank stares.

Asshole salespeople trump artistry.

That is... brilliant. I concede.

Six_By_Nine: Y'know, I don't really hate Nickelback. In fact, this song is kinda fun, and it's even better that they know hat they're not really liked, and have fun with it anyway.

I gave it a shot. The intro to the video was amusing and I could see how the song could be fun from the first stanza. However the reality is that I just plain can't stand Kroeger's voice so I couldn't watch it all the way through. On the plus side this puts him in the same company as Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow and Celine Dion from my perspective.

My hatred for Nickleback has waned quite a bit over the past few years. Since they oozed on to the scene, there have been a parade of even less talented assclowns - famous only for being famous (exhibit A: Rebecca Black; exhibit B: Ke$ha).

I'll even grant them some respect for not wilting in the face of burning scorn.

So you're not my cup of tea, Nickleback, but keep on keeping on (if you must).

I get what you're saying about the laws of diminishing hatred. I'm not a fan of their music, and they'll never set a bar for innovation, but by comparison to music and bands created by corporate teams that hit it big instantaneously, these guys paid dues over years in bars, found a mindlessly fun, party-on niche and proceeded to exploit the f*ck out of it while making obscene cash, f*cking whoever they want, having fun and maintaining good humour about themselves. Their story should be most FARKers' wet dream.

They're winning the war of attrition against their critics. They're Sha-Na-Na.

Strange. How can a band that reliably and consistently fills up stadiums be "hated". It's like blonde jokes. You do know why there are so many blonde jokes, right?

/So that telling them to each other will give redheads and brunettes something to do on Friday and Saturday nights./

Fark it, they make a good stripper song.

Just don't play me anything slow other than maybe Rockstar. They are horrible when they get sappy.
