What kind of awards would we be giving them when they're dead? "Most Hated Band of the Century"?

No, Chad, it will not take you until you've died to get recognition from critics. It will take you until the heat death of the universe to get recognition from critics.

I've always hated them, but i hate all generic pop. What confuses me are the people who are into generic pop music, and treat Nickelback like they're different somehow. Maybe they're just hopping on the hater bandwagon, because it seems popular?

Y'know, I don't really hate Nickelback. In fact, this song is kinda fun, and it's even better that they know hat they're not really liked, and have fun with it anyway.

You sound like a hipster D-bag.

2012-06-16 06:15:48 PM
I think one of the reasons they get some much deserved hate are the statements they've made like "the only reason I'm making music is to delay working in a lumber yard for as long as possible" and "I think we're just trying to keep our fans happy. We're on auto-pilot." and that "they're used to having people insinuate they were a cookie cutter, corporate rock, manufactured band and that it didn't bother them in the slightest"

Their plan has always been to keep making the same shiatty music until it stops selling. They know they're shiat, and figure why put any effort into making anything decent as long as people will pay money for shiatty music. Their old drummer wanted to use their first commercial success as a foot in the door and wanted to actually progress musically and make a great record for a change, so they got rid of him, and replaced him with the drummer from 3 Doors Down, another cookie cutter, corporate rock band.

I don't get the hate. Nickleback is probably one of the greatest bands of our time. The members of the band work hard to give us true rock music that can span across several genres and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. My grandfather and I share a mutual love for their sound and we even went together to see them live. We weren't able to stay for the entire performance, because it was getting late and he has trouble driving at night, but the three songs that they performed before we left were great and it was so much better than their recorded stuff.

My dad has never really been there for me, so grandpa is the best father figure I have in my life. For Fathers day tomorrow, I got him a new iPod touch loaded with all of Nickelback's albums and I picked up his cake today:

I really think that just because you don't like a band or a musician, you should just keep your opinions to yourself, as it may hurt those that have had nothing but amazing experiences with that band.

He's probably got a point. As with sitcoms and movies, tastes differ widely and it becomes difficult to measure the quality of a body of work objectively.

Take Metallica, for example. Most agree that they really began hitting their stride somewhere between the black album and Load, but give another listen to their earlier albums and you'll find there's actually some quality material in there. And really, hair metal in general is a forgotten genre soon to be unearthed by a whole new generation thanks to the movie Rock of Ages, who are about to discover and elevate previously unappreciated bands such as Slaughter and Quiet Riot much as we did with The Who after hearing CSI's opening theme.

The price of being ahead of your time is that nobody really appreciates you at the moment. What great artists got left by the wayside when we were letting ourselves succumb to Beatlemania? Yeah, there's a lot of glitz and glamor to modern rock acts like Godsmack or Radiohead and unfortunately it tends to lead critics to allow all music only a surface-shallow listen, which can miss the musical nuances and lyrical subtleties a band like Nickelback has to offer especially in the context of the ongoing loudness war.

Anyone honestly explain the hate people seem to have for Nickleback?

They're just generic rock. They're the taupe of music. They don't stand out to me as either amazing or horrible. I treat their music like I treat all pop music; like a piece of gum. A disposable commodity to be chewed on for a week or two then dropped and probably not picked up again.

At least you don't hear their shiat played 4000000 times in the daily Cumulus/Clearchannel 'new!fresh!variety!' mix stations.

You're not going to convince me Nickleback is magically worse than Black Eyed Peas, One Direction, Gotye*, or any of the other generic pop bands.

*that one song was ok before I heard it 30 times a day, and his album is typical hipster navelgazing bullshiat aside from that one song; I put the draw down to it featuring the lovely Kimbra's voice.

I think Chad Kroeger's biatching and moaning is a big reason why they are hated more than other equally low-caliber bands. He's got a long record of complaining that people don't like them and doesn't he doesn't stop, but it sounds like he's given up and just accepted that Nickleback is a hated band.

I'm ashamed they're from Canada... (Sorry USers)

I was with you until the bolded part. Nickelback is generic, but their more annoying aspect is how overplayed they are.

Frankly, there's much worse out there that also gets overplayed.

I won't try to convince you that they're worse than the Black Eyed Peas, because they're both god-awful. There is little music that I hear that makes me agitated, but aside from select songs from their 'hits', Black Eyed Peas and Nickleback illicit that reaction all the time. One Direction is teen-pop, so I give that a pass since at that age musical taste hasn't developed. Plus I can't think of anyone of their songs to compare music. And as for Gotye... I've only heard that one overplayed song, which is refreshing when compared to all of the other pop songs on the radio but is getting old. If he keeps it up for a decade then I would agree with you, but he's only been popular for a short time.

kroonermanblack: Anyone honestly explain the hate people seem to have for Nickleback?

The level of hate is proportional to their popularity.

It's the same with Twilight. For instance, let's say you're a NASCAR fan. Now let's say someone starts a Pretty Pretty Princess Racing League. Your first reaction would be, "Well that's stupid, but oh well, it'll never catch on." But then it does start catching on, and soon you start seeing articles written about it in your favorite Racing Today magazine. Then your reaction is, "What the hell? People actually care about this crap?." And then not long after that, Pretty Pretty Princess Racing is now on the cover of your magazines and is the first thing the media talks about it whenever they mention racing news. That's when your reaction becomes, "This is the worst thing in the world."

But I don't think Nickleback is the number one thing killing rock music. That would be old fat white Conservatives still embracing it, which immediately turns off younger generations. Ever seen that Huckabee show on Fox News where he tries to "rock out" with his musical guests?

Actually, I never hear Nickleback on the rock, alternative, 'modern/pop', or the 'we pretty much play the same playlist of easy listening classic rock five or six times a day' 'rock' station.

I wish I could be in a band that was so bad that they earned millions of dollars and got to go on tour to lots of cool places. I'm a pretty bad musician, but I never got as awful as that.

I admit the first two albums from Nickelback : "Curb" and "The State" are actually quite good and I loved em when they came out. Since then it's been quite downhill and I've not been a fan at all. Got free tickets to see em live last week and figured I'd go to see SEETHER and BUSH. Both bands played great and I wanted to see what Nickelback was going to sound like live. They put on a huge light/pyrotechnics show and they stage was rather elaborate. I was quite impressed. Chad could actually sing in tune and the band had energy.

Still hated every song as they sounded the same, and they didn't play ONE song from the first two albums. Was complete shiat.

Moral of the story..... all sounds the same. actually talented musicians. awesome stage show. attracts super-christian-focus-on-the-family 45yr old white women. meh.
