It's not just a woman thing, it's an entire society thing; when a woman says something people disagree with, they attack her femininity. That there is a stereotype that it is only "catty" women who do this sort of thing doesn't mean that women do it more than men.

And I have more female friends than male friends, in case you're curious.

Femininity or sexuality are the first to be attacked. IE, I met a contractor friend for drinks while Mr.S. was at work so obviously I'm a whore. Yes, I heard some old b*tch say that.

Now there's a true stereotype; regressive old ladies think women these days are whores.

She does not get to define that for other women. Especially not without nastiness thrown right back at her. Not hers.

As I said, she is not attacking their femininity, she is attacking their feminism. Feminism is an '"ism". The one thing that every "ism" shares in common is that its members each tend to declare who is an isn't a proper member or who is or isn't supporting the cause correctly.

You know how I know you didn't read the article? Hint: The headline is "1% Wives Are Helping Kill Feminism and Make the War on Women Possible"

From the article: "Being a rich mom -- even with five sons, bless her heart -- is not even sort of a job. Housekeepers there, servants there: it's not just that being a wealthy wife is not work in the way that being a corporate litigator or a corporal in the Army is work, it's that it doesn't even involve picking up Lego pieces and putting away GI Joe dolls or much of any of the stuff that makes being a mom a job. Why do we have women's suffrage if a woman can go vote for anyone, as long as she chooses them?

Sooo..... people should be able to vote slavery back in? The Founding Fathers were actually completely against true democracy. And I'd like to point out North Carolina, current bigoted state of the month, for continuing to prove that just because the voters choose it doesn't mean it should be taken seriously.

Horseshiat. Feminism means allowing women to pursue their happiness in any way they choose. It means not HAVING to depend on men, but if you truly want to be a stay-at-home mom, then no one should make you feel less for doing so.

You're kind of missing the point. To make the analogy appropriate, you would have to ask whether a person (or a state, I suppose) can do anything they want and still legitimately be able to consider themselves "democratic". The answer, clearly, is "no".

Which leads us back to TFA. If feminism can be said to have a definition that is somewhat less broad than "Anything any woman does", then it would be possible to make inferences about who is and who isn't a feminist.

What in the jimmy fark? *goes back to actually read the article* WHAT THE JIMMY fark?

no, no, no. Feminism means having the right to make what choices are best for an individual woman's life, even if that means wearing pink and wanting three kids. Holy shiat, that writer is pants on head stupid.

Does Mitt Romney's wife even consider herself a feminist?

2012-06-16 06:46:20 PM
Does that article ever end? I got four or five paragraphs in before I stopped and though holy damn this is long, pointless and rambling.

2012-06-16 06:47:01 PM
Because here's what happens when women go shopping at Chanel and get facials at Tracy Martyn when they should be wage-earning mensches: the war on women happens.

You know... women can do both of those. Why can't a woman work 9-5 then use her hard earned paycheck at some nice stores along Michigan Ave/Fifth Ave?

Did Romney actually tell his wife that her job was more important than his? So condescending. If he thought that, he'd be doing it.

That's begging the question of whether Romney would allow his wife to have a more important job. I'm not a Mitt fan at all, but it's really disrespectful to assume Mitt would take the most important job away from his wife just because.

I have to admit that when I meet a woman who I know is a graduate of, say, Princeton -- one who has read The Second Sex and therefore ought to know better -- but is still a full-time wife, I feel betrayed.

THAT is condescending. Who are you to tell people how to live their lives?

For the longest time I would not date anyone who would now be called a one-percenter because money and power are such a potent combination, and if I am going to be bossed around, I don't want that to be the reason.

Yea, just like I avoid dating Nobel Prize winning models. Looks and brains are such a potent combination. Also, she doesn't have much faith in herself to hold her own in a relationship.

She didn't even go into politics, which surprised me. There was a small amount of anger behind her bits, but same could be said for a lot of good comics. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was quite enjoyable. I also have a bit of a crush on her, so that probably didn't hurt.

And just for random info, she performed with Kyle Kinane, who caused me to hurt from laughing so much. Never heard of him before, but he was great.

This. I gave up a lucrative career to raise 2 boys (one with a disability) My husband is out of town 3 weeks out of the month. I get the looks from other women all the time. I'm ok with it. I've never judged them, so I don't care. I wanted these little monkeys and I intend to raise them.

We have older vehicles, a small house and live a very financially conservative life.

I made an honest 5 minute attempt to read that article, and gave up. That woman is a terrible writer and was all over the place. There was no flow. It was just back and forth in some attempt to sound smart that left you ultimately wondering exactly where it all was heading. Long winded, to say the least. Someone hit me with the cliff notes. A man, if possible.

Then my husband won't mind if I lay down and quit. Maybe I'll take up a new hobby to fill my time. My own mother has moved onto drugs and alcohol. Maybe I should just walk out the front door, take up drinking, and start accosting people with "Pardon me, can you spare a dollar?" I hear if you drink enough, you don't mind your own stench anymore.
