Wow... that's really too bad

/if only they'd had some way of knowing beforehand what a major tour was like

Van Geezer. That's why the tour was cut short.

Is getting driven back and forth from the airport that tiring? How much are they paid per gig? 50-100k each? I think I could manage a year of that difficult lifestyle.

You mean decades of abusing you body isn't conducive to touring in your late 50s? Who knew.

Do what Ozzy does and have extended jams where he pisses himself while using a garden hose to water down large-breasted women. No need for an adult diaper.

According to a friend that works at a radio station in Dallas, it was poor ticket sales that lead to the canceling of the tour.

Van who?

I look at my CD and record collection now & then and scratch my balding head asking "WTF was I thinking?" Then I remember - Columbia House. Get 10 records free. Just promise to buy 3 more from us within a year...please?

CSB alert - I abused them on numerous occasions. It's as if they wanted to be ripped off. All you had to do was fill out & mail their little postcard they included in farking EVERY magazine and in about 2 weeks voila! Instant pile-o-vinyl. The ensuing and ineffective mail-only collection campaigns used to crack me up. They would continue to send music to the same address as long as a different name was used. Some of mine were:

Richard Head
Paige Turner
Dick Richard
Mona Lotte
Rod Richards
Bobby Binge (my last one from the late 80s - I still have the ID card they sent)

But yeah, I had a few Van Halen records and saw them a few times in the early-mid 80s. David Lee Roth was/is a screeching tool of epic proportions but I'm sure he slayed his share of tail which made him OK in my book.

Van Halen sucks. That is all.

99.9999% true, but you can't go saying that publicly. You'll never get another gig that way.

\also, I've wondered since this happened: What happened to the contest where IHeartRadio was gonna send people to the LA concert? They still sending people for a nice little LA vacation or just sending out giant checks?

That means Aerosmith will probably crap out halfway through their upcoming tour.

I find it hard to believe anyone would still want to see Aerosmith, but whatever.

Probably the first one Eddie did sober.

eh...I'll give it to them.

They probably forgot what it took to do a tour.
Time keeps a' tickin'...and the body changes.
And you're correct...they are now sober...amazing how chemicals keep you body numb and going.

Everything counts.

Take it easy...put out a few here and there
If you don't die...you'll get to that city sooner or later.

Rock on.

They cancelled because they didn't want to be out on the road at the same time as the worthier, more talented, Chickenfoot. The comparrisons would be very bad for business.

I saw them last month in KC, and the place was pretty close to full.

Also, I can see them being worn out. They came out and rocked the joint for 2+ hours, looking like they were having the time of their lives. DLR never stopped moving. Dude's in great shape for his age.

/glad I got to see them

That IS a CS since I did the same thing to Colombia House. hahah The other music clubs were smarter about it. It's been almost 20 years, but if I remember correctly, BMG had you sign a purchase agreement, which I did. Nowhere in the agreement did it list you were stating you were 18 (it changed to include that at some point). After I paid the $0.10 (or w/e it was) for the initial CD's, I told them I wanted to cancel:

BMG: "Then you'll have to purchase 6 albums at full price according to your agreement."
Me: "I'm 17 and can't enter into legal agreements."
BMG: "......"

/Also pulled the "it never arrived in the mail" trick to great effect

You can take them to a used CD store -- they'll point you in the direction of the nearest trash can.

I don't know the story behind that but it's be a pretty dick move if Eddie threw out Anthony in favor of his fat ass son. Michael was the whole sound of the backup vocals.

This is news NOW? I heard this on the radio like a day or two after they announced the shows being cancelled. I think they had a soundbite of DLR saying they'd bit off more than they could chew.

Jaysus. Why? The airwaves being taken over by rancid dogshiat like Kool and the Gang in the '70s sent me skittering for Ramones and Sex Pistols records.

That pretty much screams Super Bowl gig.

Totally different scene. Wipes your ass and charges you per square.

Van Halen would be one of the perfect bands to bring an Ozzfest style tour to light.

Get some of the up and coming guitar virtuosos and their bands on alternate stages and make the whole thing a huge party atmosphere thing.

I don't own any of their albums, but I totally respect Van Halen as musicians. They are masters of the craft. The album did very well upon release. You should check your facts first before posting. I know I know - welcome to Fark... People really like the album. I listened to it on you tube when it first came out just out of curiosity and I think it's really good. Tattoo is the worst song on the album, which is strange - I have no idea why it was picked as a single.

Van Halen score their 14th consecutive Top 10 debut with new album "A Different Kind of Truth."

wikipedia:

"Commercial performance

A Different Kind of Truth entered the US Billboard 200 at #2, selling 188,000 copies in its first six days of release. It is the group's fourteenth consecutive top ten album in the US.[22] It has sold 377,000 copies in the US since its release as of June 6th, 2012.[23] The album also debuted at #6 on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 14,040 copies, becoming their highest charting album ever.[24]"

I said poor ticket sales, not album sales.

BTW - 188k and 377k are not very good. They are good compared to what else is now selling, but 1984 sold 10 million. iTunes rules now.

Really? You don't think people buying the album equates to people wanting to see them live? Also - the album just came out this year. It's probably not going to sell 10 mil, but it's not doing that bad either. Van Halen is like Aerosmith, The Police, or The Rolling Stones - people will always pay to see them live. They've got too much history and too much respect from their fans. They have a very wide and loyal fan-base. Most likely, the tour was cancelled because they can't get along, not because of ticket sales. Being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, even though Rush was left out, is still no small feat. They also had ALREADY played the majority of the shows on the tour when it was cancelled. I bet you probably didn't know that, did you?

Most of the music I buy is electronic, so that doesn't apply. I prefer to not listen to the radio if I can avoid it. Van Halen was before my time, personally, but I still have respect for their music. I think you can still show respect, but not necessarily be a fan.

wikipedia

"Despite an average ticket price of approximately $150, Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth Tour" proved to be an unqualified commercial success as well, with nearly all U.S. arena shows "either sold-out, or close to it." [61] Critically, the band received mostly positive reviews, particularly when performing throughout the U.S. Northeast (during February and March 2012) and West Coast (during May and June 2012). R&B legends Kool and the Gang were hand-picked by frontman David Lee Roth to open the first two legs of Van Halen's tour - a decision that seemed baffling at first, but ultimately proved to be successful. [62]"
