Gonna be a beating sort of day.

So wtf game am I watching this afternoon involving something Portuguese?

\brother in law's father's birthday party was moved up for a game to 2pm ET

This is by far the most insane of the groups, scenario-wise. I think I have it right, though:

Russia wins group with (a) win; (b) draw and CZE/POL draw; (c) draw and POL win by 1-2; (d) draw and POL win by 3, RUS scoring no worse than 3 fewer goals than POL; (e) loss by 1 and CZE/POL draw; (f) loss by 2 and CZE/POL draw [depending on application of tiebreaking procedures]*
Czech Republic wins group with win and RUS loss/draw
Poland wins group with (a) win and RUS loss; (b) win by 4+ and RUS draw; (c) win by 3 and RUS draw, scoring 4+ more goals than RUS
Greece wins group with (a) win by 3+ and CZE/POL draw; (b) win by 2 and CZE/POL draw [depending on application of tiebreaking procedures]*

Russia is runner-up with (a) draw and CZE win; (c) draw and POL win by 4+; (d) draw and POL win by 3, POL scoring 4+ more goals than RUS; (e) loss by 3-4 and CZE/POL draw; (f) loss by 2 and CZE/POL draw [depending on application of tiebreaking procedures]*; (g) loss by 5 and CZE/POL draw, scoring no worse than 2 fewer goals than CZE
Czech Republic is runner-up with (a) win and RUS win; (b) draw and RUS win/draw; (c) draw and RUS loss by 6+; (d) draw and RUS loss by 5, scoring 3+ more goals than RUS
Poland is runner-up with (a) win and RUS win; (b) win by 1-2 and RUS draw; (c) win by 3 and RUS draw, RUS scoring no worse than 3 fewer goals than POL.
Greece is runner-up with (a) win and CZE win; (b) win and POL win; (c) win by 1; (d) win by 2 and CZE/POL draw [depending on application of tiebreaking procedures]*

Russia advances with (a) win/draw; (b) loss by 1-4 and CZE/POL draw; (c) loss by 5 and CZE/POL draw, scoring no worse than 2 fewer goals than CZE.
Czech Republic advances with (a) win; (b) draw and GRE draw/loss; (c) draw and RUS loss by 6+; (d) draw and RUS loss by 5, scoring 3+ more goals than RUS
Poland advances with win
Greece advances with win

Russia out with (a) loss and CZE win; (b) loss and POL win; (c) loss by 6+; (d) loss by 5, scoring 3+ fewer goals than CZE
Czech Republic out with (a) loss; (b) draw and GRE win by 1-4; (c) draw and GRE win by 5, RUS scoring no worse than 2 fewer goals than CZE
Poland out with loss/draw
Greece out with loss/draw

*-If Greece beats Russia by two goals and Czech Republic draws with Poland, the three non-Poland teams are tied at 4 points. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head points (3 each), then head-to-head goal differential. Greece and Russia would both be +1, followed by Czech Republic at -2. I can't quite tell whether the tiebreaker resets (Greece #1 on head-to-head win over Russia, Russia #2) or if it directly continue to goals scored among the three teams (in which case Russia is #1 with one more goal than Greece). In any event, the Czech Republic would be out in this case.

I don't give a shiat about the 'fairness' (this is FIFA afterall) I want the normal back-to-back schedule I've gotten used to. What am I supposed to watch for the next 2.5 hours?

Russian game will be the most entertaining if you want to see a beating

Czech game will be most entertaining if you want to see a struggle. (Though I think the Czech's will still pull off a nice victory in the end. Poland will lose all hope and stop playing after they go down a goal.

Final group games have been simultaneous since...I don't know when.

Here is an entertaining story for the young'uns: Link

Also - it is UEFA, not FIFA. The Tyrion to the Lannisters of world governing bodies.

If the other game knows the results of the first one, they might throw the game to get another team in the knockout phase instead of actually playing hard knowing they're on the line too.

See the Yankees Tampa game at the end of last season. They see Sox are going to lose and give up a huge lead "by accident" allowing Tampa to get into the post-season instead of the Sox.

Ever since after the 1982 World Cup, and a particularly garbage game between Austria and West Germany where both teams knew they could get through if Germany won 1-0, and played accordingly...after West Germany scored in the first 10 minutes there wasn't even a single shot for the rest of the game.

More on this

Poland/Czech Republic. Give me a game where both teams have a strong incentive to win over the one where one team can draw and be fine and the other is usually just plain awful to watch.

Russia at least has some sort of incentive to win...2nd place in the group is likely to be worth a matchup against Germany in the quarterfinals.

If it's the guys I saw, they were wearing more of an Athenian style*. Still very cool though!

*Not to say Spartans would have never worn such a helmet, it's just more identified with Athenian while I think the Thracian style is more Spartan. The ones I saw were Corinthan.

no, it was more of a hybrid of the latter era Corinthian style with a dusting of Thrace but definitely Spartan but as if rebooted by the classic Athenian style.

I wasn't old enough for that, but there was also an awesome Champions League last-day-of-group-stage game between Bayer Leverkusen and whoever Fabien Barthez was keeping the goal for at that time(probably AS Monaco).
They were so blatantly obvious about keeping the result that let both of them advance during the last 10-15 minutes or so that it even turned somewhat funny.
I still have an image how Barthez is sitting with his back against one of the goal posts, watching relaxed how the field players, each team in its own half, pass the ball back and forth.

Yes, oh my god yes. I'd like to live somewhere warm and sunny one day. London is a lot warmer than north of the Antonine Wall.
