bojon: I believe Charles Blondin did it with out a harness over a hundred years ago.

Several times, in 1859, once pushing a wheelbarrow and once carrying his manager on his back.

Sort of like watching paint dry

HardRocker488: I'm conflicted. Part of me thinks he's a pussy for using a tether (although ABC made him do it) but then again had he not worn a tether and fallen to his death I probably would have called him a moron and chalked up another win for Darwin.

/Came here to say that. Still takes iron balls to do that, if he had fallen and been knocked out..i have no idea how they would have gotten him off of there.

Bathia_Mapes: Debeo Summa Credo: Bathia_Mapes: Debeo Summa Credo: Meh. He had a safety harness which took all the drama out of it.

He kept talking about Jesus which was annoying, but it was funny when he used the term jackoff.

ABC made him wear the safety harness.

Yeah, i figured it was something like that. No way would they show it live if there was a chance of him going down the falls.

But still, I have to say it made it boring.

True, but when your financial backer (ABC) says you have to wear a harness, you wear a harness.

If you ever saw the video of... what was it, his grandfather? coming off that wire in SA, you understand why

how annoying

The people who did it without a harness all did it at the site of the current Rainbow Bridge or near the site of the whirlpool rapids bridge. I think there was another "permanent tightrope" too. The whole big hubbub was this was over the actual falls. He would've landed (sans harness, plus fallage) above, in, or below, the falls. Thus the mist. Thus the "never been done before."
/Paid attention on the tour.

Yes, came in here to say this.

No, but a dude jumped over just wearing his clothes a couple of weeks ago and survived. It would have been a great daredevil stunt if it wasn't a failed suicide attempt.

Granted, it was the coolest failed suicide attempt ever, but...

Yep, that was just horrible to watch on TV. It sure looked awful windy up there but they blamed his fall on bad roping. The Wallendas used to be a big dealio. Do kids even go to the circus much these days and watch the highwire acts? In the 70s that was hot stuff.

As far as I could tell, for all the praying and what-not he did wile on the wire, During the interview afterwards he never said anything to the degree of "Jesus was guiding my every step out there". He seemed mainly to credit his own physical and mental effort to make it.

Of course, I didn't watch all of the afterward stuff or any of the lead-in coverage, so I might have missed it.

I'm not sure why people think its horrible. Yeah he died, but the only reason you pay attention to these AWs is the very fact that they could die. If they never fell the thrill would be gone.
