Who the fark cares? He's an idiot. There are plenty of both who claim to be members of either major political party.

My wife's grandfather, who voted Democratic his entire life, is someone I could see doing this, except with a shotgun instead of a handgun.

Thank your diety of choice he's dead now.

I'll take the "He's a Democrat" side of someone's bet that he's a Republican - the last time you were completely wrong.

How about we all agree that he is a farkin nutjob regardless of his political leanings.

We can't, because both sides have to make everything bad part of the other side they can scream and rage and create more hate for their enemies. Murders, traffic accidents, environmental demonstrations, fat people at McDonald's, everything must be turned into a weapon for politics.

One the biggest problems with America and one of the main causes of this country falling apart. The Dems and Reps would sooner destroy America than cease their bullshiat and work together.

Click Click D'oh: lennavan: I think this is a great post and I think you are right. The difficulty is while I bet most NRA members would agree with you, I'm absolutely sure the NRA itself would disagree with you. Like this guy, the NRA has gone quite insane.

As an NRA instructor... I suspect you really don't know very much about the NRA at all. I can't speak directly for the NRA, but I can assure you that all the NRA curriculum that I teach says that pointing guns (loaded or unloaded) at harmless children is a very bad thing.

Sure. And the Catholic Church will tell you that raping children is a very bad thing. Then they'll look the other way while you do it, and cover it up when you're done.

The NRA does not exist to do good things. I say this as a gun owner and enthusiast myself, and as someone who would never be associated with the NRA. They're freaking evil.

Holy shiat, what an asshole!

Now, now, we're not talking about Scott Walker in this thread.

PlNG: Everybody is so quick to crucify here. This story seems really one sided. How much you want to bet those kids were trolling, turning around in his driveway like clockwork. Not gentle turnarounds either, but the kind that leave rubber.

WTF is wrong with you? Even if a bunch of kids with an ATV were burning rubber on his driveway, that would in no way justify the threat of deadly force.

mr_a: I am a gun-owner, a lover of all kinds of target shooting, an NRA member, a 2nd amendment supporter, etc etc etc.

There is NO REASON on earth why you should be pointing a weapon at a 4 year-old. None.

His weapons should be confiscated and he should be banned from ever owning a weapon of any sort again. He has demonstrated quite clearly he is incapable of safely handling a weapon.

And I believe most NRA members would agree with me. No one hates irresponsible use of firearms more than people who like guns.

Oh there are plenty of reasons. This guy just did not have any!

If only there were some method of making it so the general public couldn't walk into a store and buy a lethal weapon to point at a four year old...

/guns don't people, gun owners kill people
//or facilitate non-gun owners killing them

A lot of people keeping harping on the fact that there was a 4 year old in this group of six. Was this one 16yo and five 4 year olds? Or one 4 year year old and five 16 year olds? There's a mighty big difference when they're in your driveway chillin' out at 8:30PM.

King Something: OTOH, if the trespassing clause of Florida's Castle Doctrine covers people's front lawns and driveways (I know it covers homes, places of business and occupied vehicles, including if you have your window down and someone outside your car reaches his hand through where the window would be if it were up), then this guy's gonna get off scot-free since the jury will be required to believe that the guy was frightened for his life because he thought the kids were trespassing with the intent to commit a violent felony.

Thankfully, the use of force, even under Castle Laws or Stand Your Ground Laws, still requires the reasonable person standard.

That's a wagon with a motor.

Nope, that's an ATV

Nope, that's a gator and a mule - which are both much more specialized than a traditional 4-wheeler. Is a Jeep an ATV? Hoe about an amphibious vehicle? I know you hillbillies like all your toys, but everyone thinks of a 4-wheeler when they hear "ATV". I could easily drive safely around with 20 people in my car if I owned a stretch limo, but I wouldn't just call it a "car."

What could his take on the situation be? Even those kids were tearing up his rose garden or running over his fence while turning around there was no need to pull a gun on them. He could have easily grabbed a camera instead of his pistol and took some photos of them in the act as proof and report it to the police.

I hate kids as much as ANYONE, they scream and are annoying and when they are older they are a PITA.
This guy should be locked away for life. Unless that 4 year old was pointing a gun at the guy, theres no reason to pull a gun on a bunch of kids.

CheapEngineer: Vespizzari: 4 year old children (at least one anyway) were present. The driver was a 16 year old male. Have you ever met a 16 year old male (in particular one with access to an ATV in a rural area) who wasn't a prick? I tend to side with the folks who say there is more to this story then we're being told.

.

Irrelevant. You don't point weapons at children, unless there is a verifiable likelihood that they are the Walking Dead. It doesn't matter of these children were wearing clown costumes and dripping fresh blood.

At what point is being a prick a shootable offense? Cause, honestly I don't have enough ammo for FARK.

No see, that's where you're wrong. YOU may not point weapons at children, but I could care less. I do not in point of fact point weapons at anything, but I could give somewhere around zero farks about children. They are smaller adults with poor impulse control, and are worth nothing more than any other life period.

My point is not that this man's actions are right or justified, they probably are not, but without the whole story I will refrain from judgement.

You are a member of an organization that actively lobbies and campaigns to make it more difficult to refuse arms to lunatics and criminals. That also lobbies and campaigns to make laws that essentially legalize execution style murder, dueling, and gangfighting. If you really believe what you say you believe, you shouldn't be supporting the NRA.

What an absolute and unmitigated piece of garbage.

I say this as a Floridian and a gun hobbyist.

"65-Year-Old-Man Syndrome" is particularly bad down there, I find. Maybe it's the heat, maybe it's Fox News. Maybe it's the fact that a ton of that particular older Florida male demographic is ex-military that returned in the 60s and 70s to settle where they trained, feel like they own the goddamn state, and resent anyone else having the social power they'd become used to monopolizing.

Just turned around in driveway? Probably not. What kids would see what they thought to be "abandoned" property... while riding an ATV... and avoid tearing around on it for a bit?

It's a 67 year old man. If it was five teenagers boozing it up in his driveway, especially if his property had been vandalized before, it paints a different picture. He's old, he's alone, It's getting dark, there are teenagers on his property. His driveway by the way is long and curves, so his house it not visible from the main road.

What i was looking for in the article was that this guy had a history of chasing these kids out of his driveway and finally snapped. Seems more like a kneejerk reaction instead as they appear to have no prior history. On the flipside, I was looking for someone who had a hisory of drinking, and terrorizing the neighborhood. Again, failed to meet expectations.

What this guy was a bit on the extreme. What's lacking is any real attempt at harm. We're not sure if he even had a bullet in the gun. While extreme, his actions have a certain rational. Scare the hell out of the kids, have the oldest call his mom come pick them up rather than just being content with terrifying with the weapon and letting them drive off. He takes it a couple of steps further by contacting 911 himself and reporting the incident to the police knowing full well what he did was wrong. Not the actions of dangerous, irrational old coot but rather, an individual who has recognized the seriousness of his behavior.

Guilty of really poor judgement but maybe not so much with deadly intent.

I have no doubt. However, I'd like to know what detail you think we could possibly be missing that could justify this:

Fulcher cocked the hammer on the revolver and pointed the gun at the driver's head and told him he'd be the "first to go." He kept his finger on the trigger.

From TFA
The 16-year-old driver apologized, but Fulcher cocked the hammer on the revolver and pointed the gun at the driver's head and told him he'd be the "first to go." He kept his finger on the trigger.

What you see in the article is the account given by the kids and the parents to the police. We haven't heard from the guy yet. I agree that this guy doesn't see deranged.
