(Townhall)   Liberals love the conservatives of yesteryear. They like to romanticize and glorify conservatives from eras when they were least effective. But they hate 'today's conservatives'. They always do, no matter what year it is   (townhall.com) divider line 171

Well subs, mostly because Yesterday's conservatives weren't raving lunatics willing to destroy an entire country just to make one person look bad.

Thanks, Townhall, for once again telling me exactly how I think.

2012-06-15 10:02:01 AM
Wait, are you implying that conservatives are effective now? What are they accomplishing?

2012-06-15 10:11:16 AM
I don't know, I'm guessing I would have hated the John Birch Society in the 60s.

today's conservatives are batshiat insane. either because they really are, or because they are playing to the people who really are.

2012-06-15 10:14:02 AM
Wait, I thought Townhall was pretty insistent that all the racists and jerks in the 60s were Democrats, while all the Republicans were marching day and night with Dr. King.

Reagan was ineffective?

2012-06-15 10:20:15 AM
Ahhh... yes... the conservatives of yesteryear. Remember those good 'ol days when politicians used to compromise for the good of the country and pass legislature that would benefit not only themselves, but their constituents?

The good 'ol days, indeed.

Oh he was very effective at raising taxes and tripling the national debt.

Are they saying that Conservatives have always sucked or that they have gotten steadily worse over time?

2012-06-15 10:40:42 AM
Republicans were better in the past? Lincoln was. William F. Buckley, Jr. was. Dick Nixon not so much.

2012-06-15 10:45:29 AM
Today's "conservatives" aren't conservative. In fact, they are radical.

A conservative would want to conserve our natural resources.

A conservative would want more couples and children in loving stable families.

A conservative would not support ballooning disparities between wealthy and poor.

2012-06-15 10:51:18 AM
You mean the corporatist conservatives of the late 1800s? Or the corporatist conservatives of the 1920s? Or perhaps you mean the corporatist conservatives of the 1950s? Surely you can't mean the corporatist conservatives of the modern era, they're different; after all, they're racist now too!

Yes, they were. They just don't always control the party.

Liberal titan Dwight Macdonald who is this? During the Columbia University protests of 1968, Macdonald expressed disappointment about the many red flags on campus that symbolized revolution. He complained that there were no black flags to reflect "my anarchist tastes." Link Sonds like he would be more comfortable with the Tea Party or the RON PAUL crowd.

Theddy Roosevelt would be pretty much the antithesis of everything the Republican party represents. Trust-busting, social justice, and environmental conservation are things only libtards care about.

A conservationist, but assuredly not a conservative.

I can literally think of 1.5 times in history where conservatives have been right.

The Bolshevik Revolution

The French Revolution (this is the half, since although the revolution itself ended up horribly, the resulting changes over the next century as a result of it were undeniably better than the monarchy).

Now, I'm liberal, but to a degree
I want ev'rybody to be free
But if you think that I'll let Barry Goldwater
Move in next door and marry my daughter
You must think I'm crazy!
I wouldn't let him do it for all the farms in Cuba.

I was one of those conservatives of yesteryear. Frankly, the party calling itself conservative lost me when they handed out purple heart band-aides.

James!: Wait, are you implying that conservatives are effective now? What are they accomplishing?

Well, they are effectively destroying our country while at the same time selling it to the super rich, preventing any worthwhile legislation that might actually help the country get better in their efforts to keep a black man from being re-elected, keeping gay couples from getting married, legally making all women nothing more than walking uterus's, forcing their religious beliefs on the rest of us and making it almost impossible to get a decent education.

Seems to me they are accomplishing a lot and none of it good.

This farking guy is getting paid somewhere for this. I've seen posts on Fark that were probably written as a one-off and forgotten that made more sense and included things needed when writing like an introduction, and argument, a conclusion and more importantly a farking point. And that was just the trolls! This type of typical writing style in these types of productions are exactly why the Right sneers at 'intellectualism' and education. Not because they don't like it (do rich repubs ever not send their kids to higher learning) but because for their constituents to learn any kind of fundamentals from writing to free thinking would expose the exact kind of bullshiat their conservative benefactors are burying them in.

Goldwater was one of the more hardline guys in the Republican Party for years and years, "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice", and all that. He was considered too extreme in 1964 to get elected. Thus, when he says "Those guys are too unwilling to compromise!", it's a sure sign that they were absolutely batshiat insane. Now they constitute virtually the entire base of the party, and positions only taken by actual Nazis in 1964 are standard-issue Republican talking points.
