It's not just Butte, however, that is struggling with the problem. Nationwide, Montana routinely ranks in the top five per capita for drunken-driving fatalities. Those troublesome statistics, along with Mariah's story and other high-profile deaths, have led legislators to seek more aggressive ways to address the issue.

Good luck with that. All of the folks on the rez aren't going to stop driving and they sure as hell aren't going to stop drinking. Maybe wall them in?

2012-06-15 10:01:29 AM
Had my first drink at 15. Between then and now, which is some 14 years, I doubt I've had more than 60 pints of alcohol in total. If some guy was offering $$$ for me to not drink at all through my teen years that would have been a breeze. I never drank because I enjoyed it, just kinda cause it was easier sometimes than hearing people complain about how 'I wouldn't loosen up and have a beer'. So I'd just have the one and nurse it for about an hour.

I am 92 years old and the only time I have ever had alcohol was when I accidentally ordered a steak that had a red wine sauce on it. Needless to say, I had one bite, then went to the bathroom to make myself puke.

Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Adams, Samuel Adams, and James Madison would all disagree with you. They all brewed and drank beer, and they are just a few of the founding fathers who fall in that category. In conclusion, perhaps if you had an occasional beer you wouldn't be such an idiot.

Sometimes it jumps a generation. Or it will catch up with her later. My dad didn't start drinking until he was in his 60's. Mom said back in the day he only drank once a year (usually on New Year) and it was the only time she could stand him.

My daughter drinks but not like most of the family and both her parents are notorious boozers.

Alcohol has been a part of the human experience for thousands and thousands of years. It's your choice and all, but I think you are missing out. Does drinking turn people into retards? It can. I don't think they post many "Bob came home and had a few beers after work and felt relaxed and didn't do anything ridiculous or silly" stories. Of course all you're going to hear are the horror stories. And drinking in a bar is not even close to the full scope of drinking experiences you can have. A bar is a special place where you go to get extra retarded on purpose. Few beers at home with a few good friends can make for a great evening.

FTFA: Knowing that the driver was 20 years old -- not even old enough to drink legally -- McCarthy made an unusual promise to the teenagers attending Mariah's memorial service in Butte, Montana.

Yes why oh why didn't the driver wait the less than 12 months until his/her 21st birthday, upon which (s)he would have awoken with a fully developed and responsible attitude toward alcohol consumption? Clearly the problem is that (s)he didn't wait for the magic day, and not that virtually every aspect of how we regard alcohol in U.S. culture just encourages an irresponsible attitude, particularly by young people.

Alcohol is a legal drug that can be abused just like meth or coke or herion. It can fark up the lives of the abusers and everyone around them.

Like goes to like. If you are not a big drinker you probably dont hang with big drinkers and maybe havent seen the potentially devastating affects of alcoholism. It can be a really harsh existance for the innocents living with an alcoholic.

Good on him for trying to better his community. Drunk drivers suck.

Drinking while underage isn't a crime where I grew up. So as long as you didn't make a scene or start fights, the police would never get involved. At worst they could make us pour out our drinks if they happened to corner us somewhere. Or bring us home if we were really wasted. But mostly they kept a safe distance - way too much paperwork if they were to get involved in a kids life, or get a dent in their patrol car.

Lately my government is campaigning against purchasing alcohol to minors. As moonshine and smuggled (sometimes poisonous) spirits are readily available, I think the campaign is mostly pointless.

I'm over 40 and have only been drunk once in my life. I had a very bad experience that time and realized it wasn't for me. A few year later, in rapid succession lost a good friend and two family members to drunk drivers. Plus my dad was a drunk and beat the hell out of me.

I don't care when people drink. When they cross the line and cause harm to someone other than themselves, I have an issue. Other than that, I don't care what people do. If they feel they need it, let 'em have it. I can only control myself. It's not the alcohol or the drugs or the guns that tunr people into retards. They are retards to begin with. The triggers just makes their inner self more obvious.

I had my first drink on my 21st birthday, when I found out I didn't really like the taste. I also can't hold my booze. 3 drinks later, I fell off the bar stool and my friend's boyfriend just carried me to the car. I do a glass of wine for holidays or a mixed drink at a chain restaurant where they tend to make weak drinks. Had a frozen margarita at Chili's once where the bar tender was feeling generous and was a giggly, rambling fool for the rest of dinner. My almost 30 year-old husband has had one drink in his life, hated it and hasn't had one since. We're boring.

SlagginOff: hbk72777: jjwars1: What about a twenty something who doesn't drink? It is equally against the norm. Where is my money? This is age discrimination. Outrage!
