Not excusing this idiot BMW driver, but why in the world would you be riding a bike down a highway at 2AM?

I'm talkin' about a hit-and-run. They snatched my BMW, hightailed it outta there. Woulda got away with it, but your daughter, farkhead that she is, left her license plate in a dead woman's hand.

Something just like this happened right outside my house a few years ago. Someone in a minivan hit a guy on a bike and took off. He lived alone and was riding home with some groceries that were scattered across the road. While we were doing what we could for him (very little.. he was a mess... he'd gone under the van and been dragged), others cleaned up the road to prevent any more accidents. Someone found the front license plate of the minivan and we handed it over to the police when they arrived.

What's interesting further is Barroso is a home health care aid and she was supposed to be spending the night at her patient's home but she left the patient to pick up her sister at a bar.

Is this an opinion piece? That's not interesting at all.

I think working at a Wendy's until 2am was punishment enough.

No kidding. I'm all for biking and I'd do it more myself, if I felt there were more safe places to do so in my area.

Last fall I was headed to work down a narrow two-lane in the pre-dawn murk. As I crested a hill (doing 55 in a 45 MPH zone, of course), I suddenly realized there was a guy on a bike, no lights and no reflectors, dark clothing, about 1/2 a block ahead of me *and* a car coming toward me in the opposite lane. I hope all the god-awful squawling of my locked-up tires scared the shiat out of him, because it sure did me.

I'd be really pissed off if I had to carry a death around on conscience just because some asshole couldn't be bothered to take even the slightest effort toward their own personal safety.

I almost ran over a cyclist this morning when he decided that he didn't need to obey the rules of the road and cross on a red. Never stopped just rode right out onto and across a highway. OH! I live in Northern New Jersey where stopping on a yellow can get you shot. Let alone this. This idiot should be glad "I'm an excellent driver"

Quite a few bikers take these two lane, back roads. I guess they figure it's safer than taking the 65 MPH highway and *most* of them wear safety gear and light colors. Some of them even use the bright, strobing "look at me!" lights, which I commend.

We'll probably not find out what safety measures the unfortunate victim in this story may have implemented.

MA's Wrongful Death statute isn't as stipulated as to exact recoveries as some other states but this chick better have a good auto policy and umbrella to cover this. Even if the person she killed stays in that job at Wendy's she still has decades of earnings potential lost.

You can, but you have to try much harder to get one then you would in a car, also if you hit someone or something on your bike while your drunk it's a lot better than doing it in a car.

You can, but you have to try much harder to get one then you would in a car, also if you hit someone or something on your bike while your drunk it's a lot better than doing it in a car.

not if you aren't wearing protective gear and going 30 mph and hit something.

30mph isn't hard to reach with a multi-geared bike.

You have to really needle a cop to get a DUI on a bicycle. Last I checked, you can't take out a minivan with a Schwinn. It's possible to cause an accident on a bike but much less likely since you're travelling a speed that more closely matches your reaction time. There's nothing asshole about it. Sober bikers are a different argument altogether.

I have seen some cities where most police were very professional and polite. I have seen some cities where most police took steps to start trouble.

Don't assume all police are the same.

A seasonal worker from out of country most likely can't afford a car just to ride around. When I first moved to MI, I arrived with nothing more than clothes. I stayed with my brother, got a minimum wage job and got my first place. Then I got a second job to start saving up for a car. I rode MTA to the first job, then to the second job and finally would walk home a few blocks away. Later I got a better paying job in Grand Blanc and had friends help me move close to the new job. I still didn't have a car yet so the move made it possible to walk to work. Now I own my house and have two vehicles. Not every young person has everything they need when they start out. The last thing I will do is criticize a dead girl for doing something a lot of folks would do when they don't have much.

Instead, I will criticize an idiot who doesn't stop when something shatters most of windshield and we are to believe she didn't see what she had hit. People who don't know what they had hit always get out to see what it was. I know I did the last time I tagged a deer. I like to make sure I am not dragging bumper or bambi when I go home.
