farkityfarker: Shakespeare's Monkey: If you can eat these

you'll never have to prove your courage, ever again.

We called them puke burgers in college.

Bread covered with pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni? What's gross about that?

But I guess a lot of people have an innate need to hate any and all institutional food.

Normally, I'd agree with you. I think people are often drama queens about institutional food, but that really doesn't look very appetizing. I doubt it qualifies for the term "puke burgers," but it looks like untoasted hamburger buns with a pretty unseasoned tomato sauce rather than a true pizza sauce, and a very minimal smattering of cheddar-ish (not mozzarella) cheese that's totally insufficient.

Toasted english muffins with actual pizza sauce and mozzarella (or an Italian blend) cheese? I'd be all over it. But that looks all wrong and extremely bland... probably not truly "nasty" in its own right, but probably pretty nasty when you compare it to pretty much any other version of pizza that one has had in their life.

In third grade, my teacher told me to sit right there until I ate my kale. After the principal saw me sitting alone in the lunchroom an hour later, she came and retrieved me. I was prepared to sit there until the end of the school year before I'd eat that garbage.

When I was in high school (Catholic HS, so no meat on Friday) We boycotted the cafeteria because we were tired of cheese enchiladas. That had trays and trays of enchiladas leftover. They served them on Monday.

Well I remember my first day at public school
I was very scared of getting pummeled
And sure enough I did at first recess
I got pegged in the head by a big red ball
It stung and my head hung
Back to class with a bloody nose
And soon it was lunchtime

Mom said I should ask about how poor kids can get fed
So I got a book of tickets and a schedule and it read:
Monday - Hot Dog, Tuesday - Taco
Wednesday - Hamburgers and Chocolate Milk
Thursday - Sloppy Joes and burritos in a bag
Friday was Pizza Day, the best day of the week
All the kids would line up super early just to eat

Monday - Hot Dog, Tuesday - Taco
Wednesday - Hamburgers and Chocolate Milk
Thursday - Sloppy Joes and burritos in a bag
Friday was Pizza Day, the best day of the week
It always came with salad and a side of cold green beans

Hooray for Pizza Day
Hooray for Pizza Day
I miss Pizza Day
The best day of the week

I still remember the full menu from the po-dunk country elementary school I went to:

Mon: Square pizza, corn, some type of dessert (usually applesauce I think)

Tue: Mexican haystack (ground beef w/Fritos, lettuce and tomato)

Wed: "Manager's Choice" (entree determined by school staff, usually consisting of all or mostly veggies)

Thursday: Chili and a PB&J (BAM! Paydirt!)

Friday: Hamburger and French Fries

Also, starting around 4th grade ice cream became optional for .50 extra - I usually opted for the Superstar Bar (red, white & blue, not choco & 'nanner)

Yep, so when I wasn't bringing my own lunch in my Hulk Hogan lunchbox, this is what I ate for lunch every single weekday from 1985 until 1990. I think when I get off of work, I am gonna make a Totino's, cut a large square section out of it, boil some canned corn and get a carton of chocolate milk.

I just sent an angry letter. We had the worst food possible in my high school cafeteria. I ate fries everyday for lunch for 4 years. Nothing else, just fries. Consequently, I gained a bunch of fat that it took me years to lose. Also our sporting events were funded by Coke so we got all the soda we could drink in the cafeteria but milk or juice was a lot more expensive.

When I was in grade school and going forward through graduation, we could have the choice of hot lunch or unlimited salad bar. I had salad most days of the week because the hot food was turrible, just turrible. It forced me to eat well. Sure, I had a 1/2 cup of salad dressing, but I also had a pound of raw food, which is what WE ALL NEED. I attribute my good health at 41 to hot school lunches.

If they hadn't been so bad, I might have eaten them and ended up fat.

DuX: We snuck out back by the dumpsters to smoke and were not shocked by reading the boxes our tasty school lunch supplies where shipped in.
The lunches all tasted about what you'd expect "Sausage Pizza with Textured Vegetable Protein" to taste like.
Kinda like anything microwaveable from the Circle K.

/Yumm!

In college, for all to see, the boxes the meat came in all said "Low Grade, But Edible." I found out later this was standard marking for some types of food distribution, but it still makes me chuckle to think about that every time I see school hamburgers,

We didn't have a salad bar, until I reached high-school. Most of the time, the hot meals was nothing more than slop.

She seems like a cute kid. I know that the "no photos" decision has been reversed, but still thought I'd point out that the blog was a little dramatic about things:

This morning in maths I got taken out of class by my head teacher and taken to her office. I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners because of a headline in a newspaper today.

I only write my blog not newspapers and I am sad I am no longer allowed to take photos. I will miss sharing and rating my school dinners and I'll miss seeing the dinners you send me too. I don't think I will be able to finish raising enough money for a kitchen for Mary's Meals either.

Goodbye,
VEG

Hi,
Veg's Dad, Dave, here. I felt it's important to add a few bits of info to the blog tonight. Martha's school have been brilliant and supportive from the beginning and I'd like to thank them all. I contacted Argyll and Bute Council when Martha told me what happened at school today and they told me it was their decision to ban Martha's photography.

It is a shame that a blog that today went through 2 million hits, which has inspired debates at home and abroad and raised nearly £2000 for charity is forced to end.

Dave Payne

Amazing how they characterized the prohibition on taking photos (unreasonable as it was) as forcing them to end the blog (it didn't), stopping her from rating the lunches (it didn't) preventing her from getting pictures of lunches from other kids around the world (it didn't) and stopping them from raising money for hungry children (won't someone think of the children!).

These folks clearly understand how to stir up a public frenzy. She's definitely going to move on to bigger and better things.

What do you need to know? It's malk. It's got vitamin R. What more do you need? You want your local school wasting your tax money on needlessly expensive milk? Malk is much cheaper. And it's got vitamin R, which milk lacks.

Everybody loved the "ground-beef-and-gravy" days at my HS, served with mash & corn. Everybody ate it all mixed together like wannabe, runny Shepherd's Pie but it was pretty good for school food. Of course, tacos & pizza were favorites. Why no school ever seems to be able to do decent (and by that I mean "McDonald's quality or better") burgers I'll never know. Ours had so much soy in them they tasted irredeemably "funny". We knew it was soy because you could see the packing cases overflowing the school dumpsters and read the ingredients. I think we might have preferred rat, honestly... at least that would have been meat!

Sounds like the newspaper article that's got everyone upset is going for the easy story - everybody who has kids and/or a tax bill is ready to be outraged at cheap-ass school lunches, facts or no. The kid's blog actually makes it sound pretty good, other than the typical British weirdness of having to order ahead of time and wear wristbands (reminds me of this). I guess that sounds more efficient than making a ton of food and wasting it, though, just unusual for us Yanks.

2012-06-15 10:14:45 AM
Went to public school and we didn't have lunches. Or a cafeteria. Everybody had to bring their own food. And that was the norm.

They had a change of heart.. imagine that, bad PR and they change their tune.

from the Argyll and Bute Council website... "There is no place for censorship in this Council and never will be whilst I am leader. I have advised senior officers that this Administration intends to clarify the Council's policy position in regard to taking photos in schools. I have therefore requested senior officials to consider immediately withdrawing the ban on pictures from the school dining hall until a report can be considered by Elected Members. This will allow the continuation of the "Neverseconds" blog written by an enterprising and imaginative pupil, Martha Payne which has also raised lots of money for charity.

They are upset at a paper that published what they consider bad press in the nest paragraph. But at least they are still allowing this enterprising girl take the pictures of her food to inspire others.

I also see that even though just yesterday she and her father lamented that they wouldn't be able to raise any more money for their chosen charity, they've apparently raised about 26,000 Pounds since this all hit (after having raised only 2,000 Pounds before). Shrewd.

I wonder if it is just her who is not allowed to take pictures of her lunch, or if it is a school-wide ban. If it is just her then this could very well be a violation of her 1st Amendment Right of free expression. Of course, it all depends on whether or not her blog is disruptive to school discipline. If so then she is out of luck. If not, then she should fight this.

I have never had food served like that...

Went to Canadian public school...
We had a cafeteria, but most people brought thier own lunches.
But our cafeteria served pizza everyday, baked goods like cookies, cinnamon rolls and muffins, fried chicken and fries, full breakfast menu, chips, pop that kinda stuff. (Sorta expensive but good quality food)

I've never had a lunch lady spoon things into a tray like ive seen on TV.

But then again we did have a lot of racial brawls.... gotta love that this is the first pic that comes up when I google my High School's name..
