the best thing we had for elementary school lunch was bean burritos, which was an alternative option you could choose every day. they only made me throw up once.

we also had a vending machine just outside the cafeteria with all sorts of candy and chips. i had a 3 musketeers for lunch most every day after i gave up on the school lunches.

it's sad that kids these days don't have that option.

I went to school in the 70's-90. Bagged lunch every day (mostly PB & J)until Jr HS then big chocolate chip cookie and milk everyday through 12th grade. (.70- 1.00 a day) But I ate healthy at other meals and exercised (played outside) every afternoon so I didn't have to worry about becoming a fattie.

Actually that's fairly common. Kids make their lunch choices in the morning, it gets sent to the cafeteria, and the lunch meal/amount is adjusted to what the students ordered that morning.

I'd imagine most schools ban cameras for any purpose, along with just about any other small electronic device that can be distracting and/or cause trouble between students.

Am I the only one who read a few of these and think it is not written by a 9 year old?

Of course, the only kids I ever come in contact with are occasional neighbors kids and kids at the store......but sorry, not buying it.

Either way, they should keep the blog up, and just keep posting submitted pictures from other school lunches, and she (they) could continue to post what she eats without pictures.

I also see that even though just yesterday she and her father lamented that they wouldn't be able to raise any more money for their chosen charity, they've apparently raised about 26,000 Pounds since this all hit (after having raised only 2,000 Pounds before). Shrewd.

We had a cafeteria, but most people brought thier own lunches.
But our cafeteria served pizza everyday, baked goods like cookies, cinnamon rolls and muffins, fried chicken and fries, full breakfast menu, chips, pop that kinda stuff. (Sorta expensive but good quality food)

I've never had a lunch lady spoon things into a tray like ive seen on TV.

But then again we did have a lot of racial brawls.... gotta love that this is the first pic that comes up when I google my High School's name..

Is this supposed to convey that people shouldn't expect nutrition or healthy food unless they're dying of starvation or something? I'm so confused on what you're trying to do with this, unless you just like posting unpleasant things.

I'm particularly nostalgic about the "Roast Beef Sandwhiches with Au Jus" that my high school had one year. It was easily the best meal of the week, everyone loved them, and then they ran out about halfway through the year and never brought them back. I was distraught.

It's been on much larger sites than Fark for a long time.

My old highschool now offers a " dance fitness " pole dancing class.

Our high school cafeteria food was just about as terrible as you'd expect. But I would hardly know it. Spent a few months of lunches waiting in line for 25 minutes and having 5 minutes left to eat the terrible food, and then wait in line to return the tray, and then make it back to class on the other side of campus in time. I realized this system wasn't working very well for me so I opted for the option of waiting in the much shorter side-kitchen-lines (the band club or other such clubs would open their rooms to sell snacks, cookies, pizza, so on. No healthy options) and getting my nutrition there. 4 years of pizza, mostly. It was delicious.

I always brought my lunch to school and occasionally, my mom would bring me hot takeout. My school had three different lunch lines, and a "Snack Shack" that had soda and nachos and stuff. I vividly remember sitting reading at a table while eating fresh Chinese food and drinking tea, while the girls next to me were eating nachos and pounding Surge, when one of them turned and looked at me.

"Omigod, how do you stay so thin?!"

I had no words.

Awww ... I'm sorry you have terrible lunches. If it's purely a money issue, may I suggest you make yourself some vegetable soup? Just water, some veggies, and a little salt and pepper, at least it will be a change from ramen.

She absolutely still could have blogged about the exact same subject (as she did on days when she forgot her camera), and she could have posted pictures of others' lunches from around the world and encouraged people to support the charity. The blog would have changed (i.e., no pictures of her lunch), but it's overly-dramatic to pretend that the entire blog would have been shut down without pictures.

Don't misunderstand me; I'm not criticizing them for whipping up a bit of public frenzy to achieve their desired result. I think it was brilliant. I just happen to recognize their tactic -- dial the drama up to 11 and get public support for the cause.

In any event, the point is now moot.

Same. I thought it was brilliant that a 9-year-old had the forethought to essentially start a food revolution. I stopped eating school lunches in middle school because they were always so disgusting. Can't imagine what the look like now, considering they consider catsup/ketchup a vegetable.

Eh, technically able to? Sure. But that's like saying you can publish People Magazine or Entertainment Weekly without any photos.

A picture truly is worth a thousand words, particularly in regard to certain topics. Food is one of them. Trying to 'explain' a dish is about a million times more difficult and never ever as impactful as simply showing that dish. That's why most cookbooks are filled with pictures, rather than simply recipes and descriptions.

Look at a thread about some crazy house designed to look like a robot or a car that a guy covered completely in pennies, wherein the article doesn't include a picture... It's top-to-bottom ranting about how idiotic it is to do such a story without actually showing the item in question.

It's frustrating for a reader to be described something that they want to, and should be able to, simply see for themselves.

Taking away the pictures would make the blog a pitiful hollow shell of what it should be.
