Why am I hearing Cat's in the Cradle right now?

On his death bed he'll say where is my son? And his wife will say 'He sent me a text message, you're supposed to die'

Reminds me of this.....

"A (black person) will brag about some sh*t a normal man just does. A (black person) will say some sh*t like, "I take care of my kids." You're supposed to, you dumb motherf*cker! What kind of ignorant sh*t is that? "I ain't never been to jail!" What do you want, a cookie?! You're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherf*cker!"

Invisible Dynamite Monkey: I put those skills to use nearly everyday. It's usually in the form of, "Sure, your proposed solution works but it's not very good and I'll tell you exactly why..."

Your LA degree should also have taught you that it's worthless to talk to most engineers, as they're too dumb to understand anything beyond identification with their job and having money be their goal.

What? Why learn about things you like and how to think about things in different ways? That doesn't result directly in income! I think universities are trade schools!

Ironically, how you chose to censor the racist epithet in the quote makes it appear more racist than what Mr. Rock actually said.

Invisible Dynamite Monkey: tallguywithglasseson: slayer199: I told him I wouldn't pay for a liberal arts degree.

I have a liberal arts degree. Political science to be exact. Ten years out of school and I'm a systems engineer on the e-commerce side of a large company. Liberal arts disciplines mostly teach you to absorb, understand, evaluate, and respond to an idea or argument. Those are pretty useful skills. The system automation knowledge I have that my employer found useful on my resume... I learned that primarily on my own. I think going to school to learn that would have been a waste.

/My brother has an econ degree IIRC
//He's a software development manager

It is almost like there isn't one set path to success. Weird.

You should break the news that even the college degree hardly matters.

He's going into the medical field (not a doctor) so it does matter. I told him I wouldn't pay for a liberal arts degree.

His mom and the rest of the family will be there.

It's okay. The people who really love & support him will be there.

Sarcasm. You said that "because you're supposed to graduate" was the reason you didn't go to your graduation.

I was raised to where I was "supposed to" get married and I'm "supposed to" have kids. Yet for some reason I still went to the formal ceremony (wedding) and I'll be there for my daughter being born, despite the fact that my wife is "supposed to" give birth and my kid is "supposed to" be born.

Engineering is supposed to teach you how to deconstruct and solve a complicated problem. Liberal Arts is supposed to teach you how to deconstruct and understand a complicated argument. 75% of people in either discipline went to college because daddy said so.

/engineering does require more math

Rann Xerox: Gibson missed his son's high school graduation in Michigan on Thursday night. "You're supposed to graduate," Gibson said.

Years from now....

Friend: Hey, man. I'm sorry that your father died.
Kirk Gibson's son: Yeah. Thanks.
Friend: So..... how was the funeral?
Kirk Gibson's son: I didn't go to the funeral.
Friend: Huh? Why didn't you go to the funeral?
Kirk Gibson's son: You're SUPPOSED to die.

Why the fark would Gibby care? He's dead, it's not like he'd know who's there.

/skipped my HS, BS and MS ceremonies - who the fark cares, get a good job, that's my reward

rickythepenguin: so yeah. in your context, i get you. i think it is Gibby sending a message to his team about focus and dedication. This was no accident. This is Gibby being Gibby, as the baseball saying goes.

My take on this as well. His son probably knows the pressure is Dad is under as the manager of an MLB team, told him "don't fly across the country while on a road trip for my stupid graduation when we have all winter to find time to hang out together", and Gibson uses the opportunity to potentially look like an ass to everyone else as hopes it sends a certain message to the rest of the team.

Doesn't mean I completely agree with it by any means, but I'll refrain from hanging him in a thread.

When he's old, I'm sure he'll think "Man, I really remember with great fondness Game 63 of the 2012 baseball season, which brought us to just under .500 for the year. Skipping my son's graduation was totally worth it."

Do we know that the kid is all "OMGOMGOMGOMG I'm GRADUATING AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH"? If the kid is like many 17-18 year olds, he'll barely register any notice at all (except for the haircut and fancy dress). In which case, let Kirk off the hook. If we assume their relationship is solid (is there evidence for/against that position?), no one else should care.

The highlight of my HS graduation was when someone picked up the principal (a ~260# bear of a man). Meh.

// plus, he hit that dinger

In the modern age a high school diploma is not even the bare minimum. This would be the equivalent of going to a 4th grade "graduation" twenty years ago.
