Well, they're just handing out diplomas these days, aren't they?

2012-06-15 03:45:38 AM
Christ, it's not like he won the state finals or anything really important.

His mom and the rest of the family will be there.

It's okay. The people who really love & support him will be there.

My son didn't go to his graduation. He told me it doesn't matter until he gets his college degree.

2012-06-15 08:57:41 AM
In the modern age a high school diploma is not even the bare minimum. This would be the equivalent of going to a 4th grade "graduation" twenty years ago.

Reminds me of this.....

"A (black person) will brag about some sh*t a normal man just does. A (black person) will say some sh*t like, "I take care of my kids." You're supposed to, you dumb motherf*cker! What kind of ignorant sh*t is that? "I ain't never been to jail!" What do you want, a cookie?! You're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherf*cker!"

It's still your kid. You go because it's your kid. I'm guessing Ol' Kirk is one of those guys who's more interested in sports than his kids.

You should break the news that even the college degree hardly matters.

He's going into the medical field (not a doctor) so it does matter. I told him I wouldn't pay for a liberal arts degree.

The college degree matters so long as, y'know, you put some effort into getting it. Anyone who tells you it's just as easy to get an arbitrary job with a BS/BA as it is without one is a liar.

As for this guy, who cares.

Obviously Subby didn't.

Why am I hearing Cat's in the Cradle right now?

On his death bed he'll say where is my son? And his wife will say 'He sent me a text message, you're supposed to die'

2012-06-15 01:17:04 PM
Someone should take his man card away.

He doesn't deserve the gift of kids.

Then again, I'm betting his death bed will be a lonely one.

2012-06-15 01:21:17 PM
He probably disappointed because his son can't play baseball.

With so few games in a baseball season, he can't afford to be away for even one. Without him, the team would simply not be able to function.

Do we know that the kid is all "OMGOMGOMGOMG I'm GRADUATING AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH"? If the kid is like many 17-18 year olds, he'll barely register any notice at all (except for the haircut and fancy dress). In which case, let Kirk off the hook. If we assume their relationship is solid (is there evidence for/against that position?), no one else should care.

The highlight of my HS graduation was when someone picked up the principal (a ~260# bear of a man). Meh.

// plus, he hit that dinger
// with the flu and two bad knees

I have a liberal arts degree. Political science to be exact. Ten years out of school and I'm a systems engineer on the e-commerce side of a large company. Liberal arts disciplines mostly teach you to absorb, understand, evaluate, and respond to an idea or argument. Those are pretty useful skills. The system automation knowledge I have that my employer found useful on my resume... I learned that primarily on my own. I think going to school to learn that would have been a waste.

/My brother has an econ degree IIRC
//He's a software development manager

FTFY. If you went to a decent college, you learned how to think, no matter what degree. As information becomes more and more available, content becomes less and less relevant. Either you learned the process or you did not.

he's right. and it would be one thing if his kid was in phoenix. he would have gone.

so while he could have taken one day off (and it isn't like this is October and furthermore, my Snakes aren't exactly setting the NL West on fire), i don't begrudge him for sticking around.

2012-06-15 02:05:19 PM
When he's old, I'm sure he'll think "Man, I really remember with great fondness Game 63 of the 2012 baseball season, which brought us to just under .500 for the year. Skipping my son's graduation was totally worth it."

This is some weird backlash against the snowflake mentality, I think. He couldn't make it and that is fine but I don't think he should be celebrated for it.

do you mean "snowflake" as in, "every child is ap recious snowflake" or the az slang term "snowflake" for "northerners that come to arizona to escape brutal winters back home"?

because we get tons of Michiganders down here that we call "snowflakes". and the kid was in michigan.

based upon what you mean, your comment means different things.

yes, and there was a time when men didn't even go see their kids be born.

now men are piercing their ears, wearing designer jeans and getting manicures and pedicures.

that's a helluva a trend there brucey.

ha. yeah, i was like, "uhhhh.....does he know that 'snowflake' means something diferent down here?"

so yeah. in your context, i get you. i think it is Gibby sending a message to his team about focus and dedication. This was no accident. This is Gibby being Gibby, as the baseball saying goes.

My take on this as well. His son probably knows the pressure is Dad is under as the manager of an MLB team, told him "don't fly across the country while on a road trip for my stupid graduation when we have all winter to find time to hang out together", and Gibson uses the opportunity to potentially look like an ass to everyone else as hopes it sends a certain message to the rest of the team.

Doesn't mean I completely agree with it by any means, but I'll refrain from hanging him in a thread.

My friend's dad bought a really nice box of cigars when he was born. He saved two and said he'd smoke them with him when he graduated from high school. When my friend graduated and was headed off to top-tier college, he said they would smoke it when he graduated college. 4 years later, my friend was headed off to law school. Again, a postponement of the cigar smoking ritual. He then opened his own law practice, it became successful, and he's doing very well for himself. He approached his father now 40 years later and said, "How about that cigar?" And his father smiled and said, "Why? Are you done?" They exchange a knowing smile and he went off to figure his next stage of life, leaving the cigars right where they were above the mantle.

Oh who am I kidding. That never happened. I made it up. I'm bored while building a server at work.
