But, as the woman, I'm taking all the medical risks of carrying the pregnancy, so if I didn't want the kid, and he did, then fine, we work out a similar agreement, but he's paying the medical bills, everything. Overpopulation is a pretend problem. There are very, very few people on the planet compared to what it can support.

We're a world that uses only a tiny percentage of the energy which strikes the Earth from the sun, we discard half of the food we produce while actively trying to drive down crop yields by using "organic" farming, we take massive amounts of arable land and turn it into lawns and golf courses, we set aside massive stands of public park lands, we have the technology to turn the ocean's water into something drinkable... what possible problem do we have with overcrowding?

The current state of medical technology to save preemies should never be the foundation for pro-abortion or anti-abortion. The act of abortion in and of itself is to destroy a tissue mass that would become a born baby, whether it be at 38 weeks years ago, to 22 weeks now, to 4 weeks sometime within the next 30 years. Life starts at conception. Without conception the whole issue doesn't even come about.

Medical technology of the future will be able to do without the human uterus, so what will a "shocked" society do then? Finally accept what common sense has been trying to say since before Roe v Wade, or degenerate into the absolute immorality of embryo farming without any thought about the consequences?

Also for all their expansion of industry and urban centers, the Chinese have done little to mechanize agriculture. They're caught in a cycle where human labor is so cheap it doesn't make much economic sense to buy a bunch of expensive John Deere equipment. So no one buys it and then as they get older they realize they need kids to help supply the man hours. They can't afford the tractor, but they can make a baby. So it's just like old American frontier families with a shiatload of kids being produced. Then some the kids leave to work in the factories (which pay better) and you need another one to replace the one that left.

Urban living in China is expensive and kids are really expensive. If one child was repealed tomorrow I doubt you'd see a major spike in urban birthrates. Some people might have three or four kids (if took them 4 tries to produce a son), but overall I bet most families would average around 2 kids. Thus in a sense one child is pointless. The rural groups have certain immunities from it and the urban folk don't really want to exceed it. If China really wants to the drop the birthrate, they need to support mechanization of agriculture.

They also need to work to undermine the idea that daughters leave the household to go support their in laws, while sons marry a girl who supports you. That's the main incentive for urban folk to spawn until they have at least one male child. Of course that tradition is thousands of years old, so good luck with that. Still though economics and the cost of kids would at least lessen the impact of this tradition.

This would make a good Asian revenge movie along the lines of "Lady Vengeance" or "Old Boy". For forcing her to kill her child she gets revenge by killing one child of each man who forced her to have hers killed. Then again, that's a little harsh, killing the children who had nothing to do with this. Maybe just kill the men themselves....or take their infant children and raise them as hers....and get them to kill their own fathers.

His wife gets the ultrasound and it comes back that it is a boy. She sends him a letter to tell him and is all excited. Political officer reads the letter (since he monitors the mail). He doesn't give the father the news, but instead forces the wife to abort. A couple of months later the father finds out about the forced abortion. Political officer ends up taking about half a magazine from the officer's service rifle, followed by a shooting spree in Beijing. Eventually they gun down father.

The funny thing is, one child is rapidly heading in the direction of failure since they're running out of workers to support the elderly. They're going to need to reverse it within a decade unless they want to totally fark themselves in the ass with a graying population.

Well, that's a good, terrifying question.

Although, many of the other First World nations do not have a growing population. The US has a SLIGHT negative population growth among its residents, but immigration increases the total population. Japan is negative. A lot of Europe has very slightly negative population growth via reproduction.

No one really knows the future, but this does suggest that the dire predictions of mathematically inevitable disaster we made in the 70's and 80's just won't happen.

I don't understand why Americans get so up-in-arms over this. The less Chinese there are, the better off Americans are. I'm a huge fan of China's 1-child policy.

Seriously though why will it? No nation that had made it through the second wave of industrialization has a population that breeds like rabbits. America's fertility rate just dropped below 2 in the last census and had been flirting with it for awhile. Germany is down at 1.36 and Japan is at 1.37. South Korea's managed to get it down to 1.15. Russia is 1.54.

Unless Brazil or China bucks the trend for birth rates to drop like a rock once you modernize, we have nothing to worry about.

Ok Ok, the knee jerk reaction for this kind of thing is obvious. But seriously think about what would happen to china if they didnt have 1child policy (and enforce it).

Real life is full of trade offs. They are already pushing what.... 1.4 billion people in a country that is about the same size as the continental US but with much less habitable area. Its a nation that is barely able to keep poverty and mass starvation at bay. Without 1child they could easily be pushing 2billion people. The options for the country are:

1) dont do anything and allow population growth to turn the nation into a 2billion person haiti.
2) declare war on your neighbors in the hopes of a landgrab.
3) learn self control.

Their leadership made the choice that obviously minimizes human suffering. It is unpopular because people are unable to take the long view.
