nickerj1: No they didn't. They dated the rock canvas or the mud/paint/stuff used to make the "painting".

If I walk outside and pick up 1 billion year-old mud and sling it against a 2 billion year-old rock, your uranium lead dating will tell you the "painting" is 1 billion years old.

No. That's not how it's done. Rain water that seeps into a cave has dissolved uranium. The water seeps out of the cave walls and ceiling dries out to make little stalactites. The bottom of the stalactite has the youngest deposits.

Radioactive uranium atoms decay to 230Th at a constant rate. If you measure the amount of 230Th at the top of the stalactite and the bottom, the 230Th concentration in the stalactite increases from top to bottom. That's because the bottom corresponds to the latest deposit and there has been less time for the uranium deposited there to decay to 230Th. You can use that to determine how long ago a particular stalactite began to form.

These scientists dated the formulation of tiny stalactites that formed on top of the art using the radioactive decay of uranium.

I hear that if you put a fire in there, it looks like the cave is waving at you...

Unpossible! The Earth is only 6016 years old! These cave paintings were obviously made by Satan to tempt us or something like that.

Here in Chicago, there are still Neanderthals that paint on the walls , the graffiti blasters are kept pretty busy.
