This has not been a kind last couple of years for the 7th Son family. Last year one of my mother's cats, named Beemer, passed away at the age of 22. This year her Maine Coon named Kenny passed away at age 21. Beemer's half-sister, Blossom, is still with us at age 23. I was 13 when my mother got Beemer and Blossom. I'm almost 37 now. Beemer's passing really hit me hard. It's just when something is a part of your life for so long you don't think about when it's time for them to pass on. Thankfully Blossom's still in good health considering. Still uses the litter box without a problem, but I think she's going deaf because she is one LOUD kitty. Her meow is enough to pierce kevlar. Got a healthy set of lungs though, and I know I'm going to be a complete wreck when she passes. I almost stopped talking to one of my friends when Beemer passed cause he said "It's just a cat." That's one thing that pisses me off to no end. It's NOT just a cat. I've been around cats my entire life (Have 4 of them myself) and the emotional bonds I have with them supersede the bonds I have with humans. Thankfully all of mine are under 5 years old. I hope to have them around as long or longer than my mother's cats were around.

Love it! How in the world did you get the pic without the flash showing in the mirror?

I'm going to assume it's a sincere question, so I'll give you the honest answer...

Notice how the mirror and the cat are at an angle with respect to the camera?
The flash illuminates the cat and mirror, the flash reflection bounces somewhere else instead of back to the camera.
Instead to shooting directly into a mirror or against a reflective surface, move to a 45 degree angle
relative to the background and you will not get the flash burn in your photos.

All my cats are indoor. Yesterday, as my roomate drove up from work, she noticed this jerk pissing right on my front door!!!! I had noticed my front door smelled of cat pee, but thought it was just us being lax with the boxes - but you do not smell it inside. How do I discourage this guy? I don't want him upsetting my cats.

reneau.smugmug.com

Hook 1 wire to the storm door and frame, the other wire to a flat sheet of metal on the top step
and then from the sheet metal to ground or a hose spigot. I'm sure he will find somewhere else to do his "business".

Broktun: sherpa18: The good thing is hyperthyroidism is pretty easily treated with methimazole. Cost for the tablets at a pharmacy is about $20.00 per month, depending on the dose. Talk to your vet about methimazole topical gel, available from compounding pharmacies. It is not that much more expensive (we sell the 5mg/day dose for $25) and it is much easier to rub gel in a cat's ear, than try to give them a tablet. EIP if you have any questions about the gel.

Thanks for the info, I knew about the trans-dermal gel, it was going to be my first alternative if I had problems with the pills (and I actually have a pharmacy by me that will compound it). I refuse to go to the diet only option, as I simply can not bring myself to deprive the white boy of his beloved people food chicken wings at his age.

Luckily for us both, we have come to a compromise - I will not resort to the hated pill-popper as long as he eats his pills in his food. (Dragon has always loved licking the can clean while I mush up his food, so I melt his pills with a touch of hot water and put it in the can before I give it him, so I know he is getting the full dosage when the can is bone dry).

Awwww, thank you both. {cyber hugs back} That is so so true, nothing like coming home to an army of cats after a shiatty day at work, lol. Dinah's beautiful! Sounds like what Blossom does, random very loud, very grating meows. I wouldn't have it any other way though. My mother had both Kenny and Beemer cremated and probably will do the same for Blossom. I'm thinking about getting a urn and engraving it with this :

You have crossed over now,
into the spirit realm.
May you walk with Bast,
and I will see you again some day.

Mother Earth, we return to you
the body of one of your children.
Her spirit will return to her ancestors,
and she will continue to live in our memories.
We are thankful that we were able
to share our lives with her,
and give her to your loving arms.

Bast, Sekhmet, we give you back your child.
Noble, regal, honorable cat.
Watch over her, and guide her on her way
to the spirit world.
May she be blessed in your names,
and hunt ever after beside you.

Might be a bit pricey but I think it's worth it.

After my one male cat had a urinary issue, everyone got switched to canned cat food to increase water intake, since the little farkers don't drink water. A good suggestion I saw was having a fountain, since critters like drinking out of running water. Monday this bad boy is going to show up - I got the huge one so our dog wouldn't have to try wriggling her head in there, and hopefully I don't need to put in a cat stool for them to reach it:

momentary threadjack...from the article:

It has been said that a woman will take a bullet when it comes to her babies. At Helen Woodward Animal Center, veterinarian Dr. Oba discovered that this extends to animals and people alike when she removed a BB bullet from the head of new mommy feline, Cindy. The cat, found hovering over her new born babies, had been exposed to more than just nature's elements in her quest to protect them. She had taken a literal bullet and refused to leave their sides.

as a responsible cat lover and gun owner, this kind of journalistic malpractice pisses me off.

1st: the cat had no choice to "take a bullet" it was shot at by some sociopathic prick.

2nd: a bb is a projectile, but NOT a bullet.

3rd and finally: "I like to think every mother would do the same," said Customer Service Lead Shannon Bush. "She certainly is a role model to mothers everywhere."

my kittehs don't take crap from anyone. they are taught the weaver shooting stance, proper trigger discipline, and are prepared to pop a cap in the ankle (or crotch) of anyone threatening their non existent babbies!

spinach gunk: Thank you so much akimbotoo, Salem Witch, Sickapie, Sherpa18, Yobbery, Debby7813, laulaja, professional_vampire! I got to meet my new nephew this evening. He is wonderful. He didn't even cry when I held him (most babies find me upsetting for some reason, lol), so I just held him and held him until my arms got tired (which was like, 9 minutes -- man, I need to start working out if I want to do any babysitting in the near future)! :)

sherpa18 typed at 9:23:35 PM, quoting first:
syzygy whizz: I'm gonna quote spinach gunk: I have also heard that hyperthyroid can cause cats to become aggressive and hyperactive. Symptoms of hyperthyroid include weight loss and increased water drinking. I think he definitely needs to see the doctor.
And just to add my 2¢, I agree with spinach that weight loss/increased thirst are definitely symptoms of hyperthyroidism (since Dragon is dealing with this), but he never got aggressive or hyperactive. I second the suggestion that he see a vet ASAP.
Weight loss/increased thirst are also major symptoms of the Big D, diabetes. 3d the vet-visit suggestion!
Also conga-cats to spinach gunk on birth of nephew, her sister & spouse on birth of son.
