All my cats are indoor. Yesterday, as my roomate drove up from work, she noticed this jerk pissing right on my front door!!!! I had noticed my front door smelled of cat pee, but thought it was just us being lax with the boxes - but you do not smell it inside. How do I discourage this guy? I don't want him upsetting my cats.

and then from the sheet metal to ground or a hose spigot. I'm sure he will find somewhere else to do his "business".

On scripts, I've found that Sam's pharmacy has the best $ if you have one of those around -- the vet is usually much more expensive -- the Sam's membership gouge is a pain, but the business membership (tell them you freelance or have a website) paid for itself when I filled one of my own scripts.

FWIW - You do not have to be a Sam's Clubmember to use their pharmacy.

Because pharmaceuticals are federally regulated, they cannot require a membership.
Anybody can use their pharmacy. Anybody.
When you walk in the door and they ask to see your membership card, just tell them...
"I'm going to the pharmacy"
They will politely tell you to have a good day and leave you alone.

shortymac: theurbanpagan: Hello all. I'm a long time lurker in the Caturday threads (and Fark as a whole). I wanted to tell you about my new kitty. But of course I have to tell you about my old one first.

Trouble was 13 when she passed away last year in July. One Saturday we knew something was wrong. By the following Tuesday we knew she was suffering from total renal failure and we had to let her go. This is Trouble:

She was 13 when she passed. She left behind Fang (on the right):

So last week Mr. Urbanpagan and I decided it was time for a new kitty. Fang was looking pretty lonely and well, it was just time. We went to the Wake County Animal Shelter in Raleigh, NC to look at another tortie that was there for adoption and we came home with Shannon:

Based on the paperwork we got with her, she was originally adopted as a kitten about six or seven months ago. She was returned to the shelter about two weeks ago. Even though the shelter put her at about a year, her paperwork shows she's barely 10 months old.

So now our house is filled with much hissing and we've gotten very little sleep because she just wants to play and headbutt you and purr and snuggle and play and tear around the house and use your stomach as a springboard... :P She doesn't talk as much as a Tortie but she does meow-growl when she talks. She heels and follows us everywhere we go. She likes to snuggle and will perch on the armchair next to us while we're at the computer. She's settling in nicely. Fang is still not happy about her being here but I know that takes time.

Now we just need to figure out what her name really is. She's not a Shannon. She just doesn't answer to it or act like a Shannon. So far we've come up with:

Growly McFluffytail
Goat Squirrel
Princess Headbutt
Thumbs
Terror
Dame Cranial Trauma

I'm up for any more you might suggest. :)

Fluffypants
Smokey
Lady Grey
Princess Mischief

Voting for Princess Mischief. :3

neener neener: Debby7813: 7th Son of a 7th Son: This has not been a kind last couple of years for the 7th Son family. Last year one of my mother's cats, named Beemer, passed away at the age of 22. This year her Maine Coon named Kenny passed away at age 21. Beemer's half-sister, Blossom, is still with us at age 23. I was 13 when my mother got Beemer and Blossom. I'm almost 37 now. Beemer's passing really hit me hard. It's just when something is a part of your life for so long you don't think about when it's time for them to pass on. Thankfully Blossom's still in good health considering. Still uses the litter box without a problem, but I think she's going deaf because she is one LOUD kitty. Her meow is enough to pierce kevlar. Got a healthy set of lungs though, and I know I'm going to be a complete wreck when she passes. I almost stopped talking to one of my friends when Beemer passed cause he said "It's just a cat." That's one thing that pisses me off to no end. It's NOT just a cat. I've been around cats my entire life (Have 4 of them myself) and the emotional bonds I have with them supersede the bonds I have with humans. Thankfully all of mine are under 5 years old. I hope to have them around as long or longer than my mother's cats were around.

I'm sorry for your losses; growing up with them, they must have seemed like little furry siblings. But what amazing long lives! I just googled a cat age calculator, and a 23 year old cat is 109 in people years! And I thought my Dinah was old at 17. She, too, is either getting deaf or senile, or both. VERY loud, random meowing and calling, at any time of day OR night. But she's been with me since she was 6 months old; it will be hard when she moves on to the next world. We've been through a lot together. She even flew from MD to FL with me.

Has she had her thyroid levels checked? Loud meowing is a symptom of hyperthyroid. Hyperthyroid can cause heart problems so it's best to get the kitty checked sooner rather than later.

I don't think we've ever had her T4 checked. She's had so many other problems, including possible lymphoma, as well as her advancing age, that that may not have been considered. I'm told that old cats can develop dementia and seem to become lost in their own homes. She last saw the vet last year, so she's due. My other senior cat, Bonnie, IS hyperthyroid & has developed complications from her methamazole, so she's been taking up a lot of my time & attention, medical-wise,lately. Thank goodness the rest of the clan is relatively young & healthy! {knocks wood!}

Love it! How in the world did you get the pic without the flash showing in the mirror?

I'm going to assume it's a sincere question, so I'll give you the honest answer...

Notice how the mirror and the cat are at an angle with respect to the camera?
The flash illuminates the cat and mirror, the flash reflection bounces somewhere else instead of back to the camera.
Instead to shooting directly into a mirror or against a reflective surface, move to a 45 degree angle
relative to the background and you will not get the flash burn in your photos.

Sad week at the kitten nursery. Sage (grey) and Betty (calico) had been coming in for almost two months and I'd been helping take care of them once a week while their foster parent was at work. Monday they weren't feeling very well, and Sage died on Wednesday afternoon. The person who supervises the kitten nursery says Sage hadn't been eating and that they don't really know what happened (My regular shift is on Thursdays, so I wasn't there when Sage passed).

img.photobucket.com

Since they'd been sick, I'd been dreading bad news, but I was still devastated when I came in and Betty was the only one there (sorry, Betty. I'm sure you'd know what I meant if you weren't a kitten). Betty was back to her usual self on Thursday, so hopefully she'll keep wanting to run around and climb humans.

7th Son of a 7th Son: Awwww, thank you both. {cyber hugs back} That is so so true, nothing like coming home to an army of cats after a shiatty day at work, lol. Dinah's beautiful! Sounds like what Blossom does, random very loud, very grating meows. I wouldn't have it any other way though. My mother had both Kenny and Beemer cremated and probably will do the same for Blossom. I'm thinking about getting a urn and engraving it with this :

You have crossed over now,
into the spirit realm.
May you walk with Bast,
and I will see you again some day.

Mother Earth, we return to you
the body of one of your children.
Her spirit will return to her ancestors,
and she will continue to live in our memories.
We are thankful that we were able
to share our lives with her,
and give her to your loving arms.

Bast, Sekhmet, we give you back your child.
Noble, regal, honorable cat.
Watch over her, and guide her on her way
to the spirit world.
May she be blessed in your names,
and hunt ever after beside you.

Might be a bit pricey but I think it's worth it.

Dinah thanks you, and I thank you...especially for the beautiful poem! When her time comes, I intend to have Dinah cremated, and interred along with me (when my time comes).

Thank you for the lols this week. Things aren't going according to plan right now in the mousie household (regarding the hooman kid). Went from looking forward to answers/a gameplan by the end of the month and are now waiting to be "rescheduled"... ARGH! The longer this takes, the more ridiculous (and horrible) things get. Then, to top it off... I managed to have a FULL bodywash bottle fall on my foot, side-of-cap-first. Instant bruise and lots of pain. Da**it! And every pair of shoes I own have a strap on or near the lovely bruise... As you can see, the bruise is spreading across my foot (it started right behind my pinky toe).
