This is our Archie (named after the same character!):

How cool! Maybe they can get Nero to figure out who shot the cat ;-)

Hello all. I'm a long time lurker in the Caturday threads (and Fark as a whole). I wanted to tell you about my new kitty. But of course I have to tell you about my old one first.

Trouble was 13 when she passed away last year in July. One Saturday we knew something was wrong. By the following Tuesday we knew she was suffering from total renal failure and we had to let her go. This is Trouble:

img543.imageshack.us

img39.imageshack.us

She was 13 when she passed. She left behind Fang (on the right):

img35.imageshack.us

So last week Mr. Urbanpagan and I decided it was time for a new kitty. Fang was looking pretty lonely and well, it was just time. We went to the Wake County Animal Shelter in Raleigh, NC to look at another tortie that was there for adoption and we came home with Shannon:

img195.imageshack.us

Based on the paperwork we got with her, she was originally adopted as a kitten about six or seven months ago. She was returned to the shelter about two weeks ago. Even though the shelter put her at about a year, her paperwork shows she's barely 10 months old.

So now our house is filled with much hissing and we've gotten very little sleep because she just wants to play and headbutt you and purr and snuggle and play and tear around the house and use your stomach as a springboard... :P She doesn't talk as much as a Tortie but she does meow-growl when she talks. She heels and follows us everywhere we go. She likes to snuggle and will perch on the armchair next to us while we're at the computer. She's settling in nicely. Fang is still not happy about her being here but I know that takes time.

Now we just need to figure out what her name really is. She's not a Shannon. She just doesn't answer to it or act like a Shannon. So far we've come up with:

Growly McFluffytail
Goat Squirrel
Princess Headbutt
Thumbs
Terror
Dame Cranial Trauma

I'm up for any more you might suggest. :)

Eventually it will come to you, and it will fit like a glove. Every cat that has graced me with their presence goes through multiple names until one finally sticks. I've never liked any "Shelter names" because they lack originality in most cases.

sherpa18: syzygy whizz: I'm gonna quote spinach gunk: I have also heard that hyperthyroid can cause cats to become aggressive and hyperactive. Symptoms of hyperthyroid include weight loss and increased water drinking. I think he definitely needs to see the doctor.

And just to add my 2¢, I agree with spinach that weight loss/increased thirst are definitely symptoms of hyperthyroidism (since Dragon is dealing with this), but he never got aggressive or hyperactive. I second the suggestion that he see a vet ASAP.

I know it can get expensive, but...
/ best of luck, i hope he gets back to his normal self soon....

2¢ more here. My Lovejoy is a hyperthyroid 14+ yo male that behaves like that when he needs his dosage increased. Even if it isn't time for his bi-annual check-up, if he starts being a butt and 'fraidy cat I take him in -- usually adjusting the dosage is all that he needs. In the past I had a male that we had rescued and then adopted out who developed diabetes, when he became ill he got very thin and drank lots of water. He came back to us because of the adoptive parent's work schedule. (All animals that we adopt out have a permanent return policy.) He got an injection twice a day and had no problem with it at all, his biggest problem was he would not eat the prescribed food which ultimately shortened his life. Diabetes is treatable, sometimes with a special diet, some times with food and insulin injections.

On scripts, I've found that Sam's pharmacy has the best $ if you have one of those around -- the vet is usually much more expensive -- the Sam's membership gouge is a pain, but the business membership (tell them you freelance or have a website) paid for itself when I filled one of my own scripts. Walmart is cheaper than the vet too, the economy has been bad long enough that pharmacies are happy to give you prices and info if you call them.

Yeah I know how that is. Trouble started out as Lynx. Fang started out as Velvet. Nothing has come to us yet though with Shannon...

I had noticed my front door smelled of cat pee, but thought it was just us being lax with the boxes - but you do not smell it inside. How do I discourage this guy? I don't want him upsetting my cats.

It's called "spraying", I believe.

Well, your house has been annexed into this guy's empire, for one thing.

First question is "are all your female cats (even if indoor) spayed?"
If not, that would explain the 'jerk' leaving his calling card at/on your door.

This is assuming, of course, that it is a Tomcat doing the marking. Only once in my life have I seen a female "spray" like that.

I use some stuff called "Boundary, indoor/outdoor cat repellent pump spray" from Petsmart. It keeps my cats from eating my indoor plants in the winter. It stinks almost as much as cat pee though, might want to sniff it before you buy. Probably would help to clean off his pee-mail and use an enzyme solution, Staples Office Supply has some that works as well as the more expensive stuff from Petsmart.

After my one male cat had a urinary issue, everyone got switched to canned cat food to increase water intake, since the little farkers don't drink water. A good suggestion I saw was having a fountain, since critters like drinking out of running water. Monday this bad boy is going to show up - I got the huge one so our dog wouldn't have to try wriggling her head in there, and hopefully I don't need to put in a cat stool for them to reach it:

I had a neighborhood tom mark my front door once here where I am now. All 5 of my girls and my only boy are ALL neutered, but it still happened. I sprayed the door liberally with Nature's Miracle, let it sit a bit, then hosed it off thoroughly. I did NOT want Buddy to smell it and start spraying in return. That is what happened 10 years ago with my Harley, at a rental house with a very aggressive tom marking the outside that could be smelled inside. I never could get Harley to stop spraying, and he became very agitated unless I let him go outside. One night, he ran out of an open door, refused to come in, and was gone a few hours later. He never did come home. :-( One small blessing is that neutered-male pee does not stink like tomcat pee.
I would chase that cat away with a hose, if possible. Or if he seems to be a stray, trap him & take him to a no-kill shelter. Or see if there's a TNR colony somewhere nearby, just not TOO close to you.

My handsome Harley, RIP (we think)...

I've only had two cats in my whole life one is an inside cat and one was an outside cat I was about 10 or 11 his name was Sammie (he was a tabby with a bob of a tail , we now think he may have been a Pixiebob). He was the outside cat since my mom hated the idea of an inside cat. Unfortunatel, like all outside Tom cats he liked to roam and one day he never came back , we never did find that cat :(.

This little lady is Reecee she is our family house cat who thinks she is royalty, but is a sweetheart besides that. She doesn't like very many out animals and freaks out sometimes at my MIL when she comes over. SIde note: My MIL owns about 5 cats, so we think she was freaking out about the smell of the other cats around her....but I like to think Reecee was just defending me since I'm her favorite ...sometimes.
