"the I-95"?

What, subby? Are you smoking the pot?

Anyone else pronounce "fajita" so it approximately rhymes with "vagina" and giggle? Just me? Ok.

You know how I know you have zero friends from Southern California?

Toll Road 417 around Orlando is often referred to as "The 417" but I-95 has always been "I-95" or "95". I've never lived anywhere where it was called "The I-95".

It sounds like "The Iraq... and Such As."

Heading to Magic Mountain or Disneyland? Take the 5.

The "the" is really for the tongue and ear. Try saying, or understanding, "Take 405 to 5 to 210 past 2 to 134" versus "Take the 405 to the 5 to the 210 past the 2 to the 134." Too many too's potentially mixing with 2s unless you throw in some the's.

95 already has an "I" in front of it, so it doesn't need a "the."

/lived on both coasts
//have thought way too much about this
///please save me
////correct use of apostrophes for some plurals

The only beef I have with this explanation is that all interstates have the I in front of them. They are I-405 and I-5, so that couldn't be it all by itself. Maybe it could have to do with the fact that unlike many interstates, a lot of the interstates in Southern California are in the hundreds instead of the tens and have more syllables/are more cumbersome to say with the I. For example, people in San Francisco don't say I-580; they drop the I and just say 580 (with no definite article), but people in Colorado say I-70 and I-25. Maybe it's a combination of this and your 2/to theory?

My husband's theory is that Southern Californians understand on an instinctual level how integral the many, many freeways around here are to our survival and thus unconsciously grant them the definite article as a sign of respect.

/probably spent too much time thinking about this as well
