throughthewire: Arkanaut: Is this just because they have two Starbucks across the street from each other?

/Pretty sure Lewis Black actually said it was in Houston.

West Grey near South Shepherd. Both stores have now been open for several years. It's freakish.

And somehow they're always busy. I can see why they did it, the yuppy community there could support it.

I heard they're doing an Episode of Hoarders on a Dallas guy. Apparently this guy built a billion dollar house and filled it with crap. Then again, maybe the Cowboys will do OK next year.

\heard that one on Fark
\\Fark you, Dallas

soupgoblin: To be honest, I live in Dallas, work in Plano and take business trips to Houston all the time. Houston reeks (I do mean actually physically smells bad), is full of more trashy people and is too humid for my taste. Also, any storms in the gulf trashes out Houston for a month or more

All that being said, Houston is better than Dallas, due to being further from the home of George Worthless Bush.

where in Houston, cause if you're going south of I10 and outside of 610 that's where all the refineries are

I thought there was one in the (Hot mom) Kroger nearby.

Nothing beats the Galleria for Starbucks density, though. If you stand at 610 & Westheimer, counting in-store kiosk locations, there are at least seven within a half-mile radius.

Only time I spent in Dallas was at the airport on a layover on my way to Costa Rica. Didn't experience anything there but it sure seemed pretty boring.

I've never been to Houston but will be going down there in a few weeks for 3 days for some customer meetings. Anyone have any suggestions on where to stay, eat, drink, etc? Also, I'm a raging alcoholic so the drunker parts of town that I don't need to drive in the better. But not shiathole gangster drunk, sophisticated late 20's business person drunk. I get to expense this, after all.

Austin is a hell-hole. Stay away. Tell your friends. Abandon all hope ye who enter here, or somesuch.

loonatic112358: misanthropic1: I love the lack of perspective in these threads; a bunch of posters, the bulk of them poorly-traveled, arguing about which berg in their culturally homogenized nation is "better", predominantly judging based upon things like traffic and weather...

I find the homogenization much nicer then say places like the Dominican Republic

Wasn't arguing better or worse (though developed vs undeveloped is apples to oranges); just saying for all the localistic boasting/hating Americans like to do, the country as a whole is remarkably culturally homogeneous.

Torchsong: I lived in Houston for less than a year. It was longest decade of my life.

No amount of money exists to make me move back there.

I'm sure it doesn't miss me, either.

/San Antonio was pretty, though.

I liked it. The riverfront was really nice, and I can't complain about the melodrama theatre I acted at.

My family moved to Austin in the mid 80's.. I have to agree that Austin lost a lot of it's quaintness
a while back. I'm not saying it's not a cool town, because it is. But it's not what it was when it was
smaller. Now it just seems like most other new growth places..Lots of strip malls, subdivisions
and massive apartment complexes that all look the same..

I'd say NYC trumps it, but one of the things I definitely think worth hating about Texas is it's love of chains.

Peter von Nostrand: scottydoesntknow: Peter von Nostrand: Article neglects to mention that Dallas is the taint

I've lived in both (currently in Houston), and Dallas is the fakest city I've ever lived in. If Houston is the asshole of the universe, Dallas is the bleached, stuck-up version.

And yet Dallas is still better than Plano

Hell itself sends its intransigent assholes to Plano for punishment. Plano exists to break down the strong and shiat in their eye.

I wouldn't want anyone to judge a town based on its airport offerings. Everybody would move out of Chicago.

Montrose sounds about up your alley, any particular cuisine you're into? For my high end dollar, I'd advise in favor of: http://hugosrestaurant.net/

12349876: Both are horrible compared to Austin and San Antonio.

Shut Up.

Austin is a terrible, horrible place full of Hipsters and Californians. Do not move here, do not even come to visit. In fact pay money to take 130 around Austin so you can just never have to even ever come close. You will hate even being near here.

2012-06-14 05:59:28 PM
Texas rocks! Other states are smaller and wussier.

Name me one other state in the union where you would actually fear for your physical safety should you throw a piece of trash out the window. Yeah, that guy in the four wheel drive Ford Super Duty behind you? He'll kick your ass should you piss on his state.

So Fark all you Texas haters. Stay in your little wussy states.

/Fark You, I'm from Texas.

I go to austin about every other week from san antonio. Please stay away from me. I love Austin. And I love San Antonio

2012-06-14 06:03:50 PM
Also, a fair warning on San Antonio:

It's Dallas Lite, and by that I mean it sucks huge donkey nuts but not donkey nuts quite as huge as the ones Dallas proper has its mouth on. It's one giant birds nest of terrible roads and is full, and I mean CHOCK FULL of corporate sprawl that is so poorly planned it'll make your head spin. When I lived there in the 90's everyone moved west because the east and south were so full of crime you could get robbed outside the police station. And every year that same level of crime, corporate sprawl, and poor city planning went further west, and north, and then every which way.

If you want a good cup of Starbucks, or a good Big Mac, or a lol-look-at-what-a-fun-and-unique-food-item-i-am-taco, then by all means, visit the Alamo City.

PS. The alamo sucks, it's just as hot and humid and stanky as the rest of the state (this is a Texas problem, btw, and not confined solely to any one city), and the historic downtown city is all one-way streets that dead-end into dried out creeks and ghettos. Enjoy.

houston gets credit for zero zoning, which of course leads to extremely cheap housing for a city of 6 million. buy land wherever you want, do whatever the f*ck you want on it.

but it smells.

2012-06-14 06:05:43 PM
I've lived in the Houston area for about 13 years. I've always thought of it as the sweaty armpit of TX. Dallas is a bit more glamorous but they really do both suck donkey balls. Can't wait to finish school and move to Colorado.

alwaysjaded: Yeesh, there is nothing more pathetic than a geographical pissing contest. Go accomplish something that requires personal sacrifice if you want something to puff your chest about.

But yes, stay out of Houston. It's just awful here. Everything you've heard is true. Roving bands of preachers committing aggravated baptisms. Nothing but white people everywhere. No hospitals or doctors or art of any kind, in fact we still only ride horses to our daily book burning in Hermann Park. Our mayor is a violent maniacal homophobe who's known to bludgeon gays on sight. The white workers get together every hour to beat the mexican workers with whips while forcing them to eat beef brisket. Dallas is a much better place. Move there. Or Austin. Or go back to the utopia you tell me about a hundred times a day and then get mad when I ask if where you came from is so awesome, why the fark are you here? You must be real stupid to leave such a paradise to mingle along here with us plebes.

The Lodge

So everyone please stop moving here in droves. It's an awful place and you will absolutely hate it. In fact, don't even come here to visit.

Houston is full of uppity messkins who expect more money to mow your lawn than Dallas and Katrina freebie holdouts who know going back to NOLA means the free ride is over. So they stay and keep robbing the dumbass white people there. The Astros suck, the Texans suck, the Rockets suck, the traffic sucks, the humidity sucks, the air stinks like ass, the water tastes like diesel, the ship channel is full of bloated bodies and empty Pearl beer bottles. The women in Houston are plastic skanks and whores. Everything is 27 miles away from where ever you are. Big deal, they got a rocket or something down there...whooptifarkingdoo. It is undeniably the #1 place on the planet you'd put the nozzle if it needed an enema, right through the middle of the ASSTRODOME.

gilgigamesh: Strangely, the only people who are friendly are the native Texans (who really are very friendly). But unfortunately, they seem vastly outnumbered by douchebags from places like Kuwait, Pakistan and France whose idea of friendly seems to be spitting near your shoes, rather than on them, when you pass them in the hall.

I've found this to be the case in Austin as well. The Texans have been very friendly. But there are a lot of people who clearly resent that they had to move here for work-- especially those from Texas-hating states.

I have a fight in El Paso this weekend and it doesn't seem that bad, yet at least. Then again I've only been locked up in a hotel room because it doesn't seem like there's a ton of things to do out here, it just seems so bland and boring compared to every other place I've been to it's not even appealing to go out and explore.
