I fit the Metallica basher stereotype pretty well. Liked everything up to Master of Puppets, hated them for Napster, laughed at the hypocrisy of 'never making a video' to masturbating with symphonies on MTV and for that shiat Nothing Else Matters that had heavy rotation. I still have to give the badly aging devil his due, both for the time and 50K kicked in to find a fan.

I can't really fault him for buying and selling an original Basquiat. That's just a good investment.

Good on James for doing this, although the author of TFA could have done a little research and learned he's not now and never has been the lead guitarist.

Right, because up until Lars, rock stars never spent money on things like mansions, cars, rolexes, etc, and they sure as hell never decorated.

They should all be keeping it real and still live in shiatty 1 bedroom studio apartments in Venice.

As for the Basquiat himself, he epitomized the hard charging, die young rock and roll lifestyle.

It is NEVER a Metallica thread without this picture.

I was at this show. The original story was the girl went outside to smoke and got pissed that they wouldn't let her back in, and was very likely drunk. Not that what happened was her fault in any way but the arena's in the middle of nowhere, the last place I'd want to be when drunk is the woods in east Bumblefark, VA.

Nice to have a semi-first hand account.

And good of Hetfield to step up and do this, though it's been a couple of years already.

JPJ Arena is on grounds at UVA (25k enrollment), in Charlottesville (pop 43k). Not exactly the middle of nowhere. How do you leave your friends and decide to hitch a ride at least 100 miles back to Roanoake?

I was going to ask why she had to go outside to smoke, but then I remembered the time I went to a Metallica show at Texas Stadium. Lars stopped the farking set to ask people not to throw the seat cushions around because "the venue has to pay for those; that's not cool, guys." He seriously sounded like a teacher supervising a field trip. I can totally see Metallica insisting they only play in smoke-free areas.

What he lacks in drumming he makes up for (mostly) in business. He's definitely part of the reason they've been as successful as they have been.

Not that they don't deserve credit for doing this, but they were kind of backed into a corner. This murder he's been featured in the news/television magazine shows a lot and their name keeps getting lumped into it. I'm sure family and law enforcement have asked them to get the word out about the need for information and they don't want it getting out that they refused to cooperate.

I just find the aging rocker thing fascinating, and kind of amusing. Growing old is hard enough, but its odd to watch rock stars grow up. They basically go from prolonged infancy directly to middle age. Some of them do it well, most don't really manage it very well.

I'd say having to hire a "life coach" puts Metallica definitively in the latter category.

How long are rock musicians supposed to maintain that lifestyle, exactly? Does it ever become okay for them to move on from living like brainless 19-year-olds who don't consider the future and think only of whiskey and boobs?

At least they're not jumping on the adoption bandwagon, say, like Gene Simmons & his missus. And their female fans probably aren't girly enough to coo over stuff like that. But I digress.

And Cliff fought with Kirk over the bed from which he was thrown. They drew cards to see who would get that particular bunk, Cliff drew the Ace of Spades, and a few hours later the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel hit a patch of black ice.

If Cliff didn't die, Kirk would have, not Lars.

Not that I would wish death on anyone, but, in a purely hypothetical, music-driven analysis, I think that would have been the best outcome (Keep Cliff and replace Kirk, Cliff being a better songwriter). James dead means Metallica is dead, Lars dead means Metallica is dead or almost dead. Cliff and Kirk where the replaceable members.
