Supposedly smoke from county side field burns, but some folks ain't buying it.

Described by residents as opaque with yellowish and greenish tinges, the fug descended suddenly in the morning, prompting people to rush to put on face masks, witnesses told AFP.

The fug indeed.

I am not saying its pollution, but its pollution.

It's just wholesome smoke from party youth campfires.

Honest Bender: Pollution is mysterious?

You know pollution is bad when the government sends out sms to people telling them to stay indoors.

What the hell good does it do to stay indoors?

For the poor? Nothing. Upper and middle class homes all have HEPA and air filters.

Along with exporting much of our industry to China, we also have exported a lot of pollution.

The only way this would be mysterious would be if there wasn't a Chinese city covered in smog.

When almost everything in the world says "Made in China" on it, you're gonna have a bit of a pollution problem.

/and by a bit I mean A LOT.

That might explain the gas mask in the closet of my hotel room in Wuhan last summer.

Krumet: Along with exporting much of our industry to China, we also have exported a lot of pollution.

You say that like it is a bad thing. The Chinks have too many old and useless people, their one child policy puts an unfair burden on their young. The solution is pollution, it kills of the old and weak. Instead of warning people to stay indoors they should encourage them to go out and inhale deeply.

HEPA does jack shiat for anything besides dry particulate. Any chemical vapors are still coming through, if it gets wet, it loses its efficiency, also you have to realize that to have a HEPA filter in place, you need a hell of a ventilation system to handle all that back pressure, most home ventilation systems can't handle HEPA.

Fug is a perfectly cromulent word.

Yeah, it's called a pea souper, something not really seen in the western world since the 1800s. This is what a lack of environmental regulations causes in an industrial society.

In Toronto and Vancouver, there are a farkload of asians with masks on. I don't really see this in other North American cities I've spent time in, not even NYC. Do you New Yorkers see this?

I don't know what to think, are they crazy paranoid or do they have some contagious disease. I realize a cold is contagious but usually I don't get them from strangers, I get them from loved ones.

In this case, what is a paper mask going to do against pollution or any gas? Nothing.

You see some in LA too around where I work (near UCLA so these are usually students fresh off the plane). I don't think they understand how unnecessary they are.

I've heard they sometimes do it when they are ill, in order to help contain their sickness.

Makes sense, as good a reason as any.

The paper masks are good at blocking out the PM10 level of pollution. The dust and other shiat always floating around in the air. And cities like that are dusty. When you go out and come home just to blow black snot rockets you start to understand why people wear masks.

When the Chinese government says that the air quality is poor, you know that it is bad.

There are air quality monitoring stations in some of the US diplomatic facilities in China, (Shanghai and Beijing), and the official explanations for why the Chinese air quality numbers, and the US air quality numbers are so drastically different can be pretty entertaining.
