zzrhardy: My kiddy bible studies seem to remember a tithing system the Jews had in the Old Testament - ie, a set portion of each field of crop had to be set aside an-harvested, for the poor people to come and harvest themselves. Ie, organised welfare was stipulated in the Bible.

Yeah, but that's the Old Testament. The New Testament also preaches kindness, generosity, and love to those in need. But, that whole Bible thing is old school.

The new hotness is the "prosperity gospel," which indicates that God shows his love by giving you riches. If you're poor, well, you deserve to be poor, obviously, because God decided that you didn't deserve to be rich. That's the push of pretty much every friggin' "megachurch" you see these days.

The homeless aren't just destitute - they're also undeserving of God's love, obviously, and so should be castigated by all God-fearing rich people.

AverageAmericanGuy: A lot of the success of shopping malls has to do with the availability of clean, accessible restrooms. Malls with dirty restrooms or insufficient restrooms drive away paying customers and tilt the balance towards poor and criminal elements.

The same holds for cities. Cities with numerous, clean public restrooms are pleasant to live in. People want to be there and they spend their money there. Cities with few public restrooms are more dangerous and have more poor people, on average, than cities with many public restrooms.

Another benefit of public restrooms is that the poor actually have a place to clean themselves; a huge boon to the nouveaux poor who more than likely need a place to clean up before hitting the streets to look for employment.

This is a terrible decision. The opposite should be done. More restrooms and more full-time employees to keep the facilities maintained. Heck, hire some of the poor to maintain the things.

Perhaps add a bathroom valet to the payroll...a spray of cologne? A lovely breath mint? Don't mind if I do!

Maybe I am missing the magnitude of this problem, but has it really come to welding?

The sheer amount of work and care that had to go into that is really overkill. First of all, you need to properly grind down both surfaces you intend to weld. None of that namby-pamby "grind just the door" crap. And I'm talking grinder disc AND flap sander. Can't even do that without the electric outlet to which they so thoughtfully cut power.
And then, what kind of welding really says "Screw the destitute"?
Tig? No way. Too fancy, what with all their foot pedals, coated rods, and carefully honed tungsten.
Mig? Dream on. Pull a trigger, and your problem just fills and seals itself. Way too easy for the anti-1st amendment gun haters.
Now STICK welding, that's the way to get 'em. Grab your rod, the thicker the better, and give it the juice! Thrust it straight in the crease, and watch that thick, thick slag just pool up around your sizzling hot piece.

I'm neither white nor soft. I am quite sheltered. Middle class? Hah! Cut my net worth and earnings by 80%, then maybe.

I wouldn't say that to the face of a homeless person because I don't like to be within smelling distance of any of them.

Solution to the bum problem

1. require a license to conduct an outdoor business within 50 feet of an intersection or highway ramp
2. have cops arrest all the begging bums because none of them will have the license
3. make sure the cops take the bum to a police annex at the edge of town in some godforssaken industrial wasteland, at least a couple of miles from the nearest busstop or public phone

Yeah, but when the homeless leave and they want to reopen the bathrooms they can blow the doors off with dynamite. Trust me, this way is much cooler.

No, it's easier to piss off the non-homeless by cutting normal services out like public restrooms. Then, running the homeless away becomes everyone's priority. Charging phones, like people charge their laptops? How dare those homeless need a cell phone. They don't need to call for work, we have services to find them jobs. They need to leave. Next thing you know, they're be looking for jobs on laptops.

Slashing urban amenities is the city's latest step in making it tougher to live on the street. The city's homelessness consultant, Robert Marbut, said street survival guides and "renegade" food giveaways only served to discourage the homeless from seeking real help.

Is that like how if you lower a corporation's taxes, they'll create jobs?

$175,000 / 12 = $14500 per month, / $300 for an average apartment = 48 people for whom homelessness suddenly isn't a problem. Even better, this is central Florida, right? Just give each of them one of the several hundred thousand houses that's been foreclosed, or maybe never even occupied if it was built in the boom but not sold before the housing crash.

Yes it's kind of amazing that the solution to homelessness never involves treating the mentally ill, who make up the largest portion of the homeless. Because obviously if the mentally ill can't figure out what's wrong with themselves and then afford treatment before they get too far gone they deserve to be crapping outdoors and trying to self-medicate with crack.

Earlier this year, Horne and Marbut called for discouraging donations to the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen. That idea was shelved after public backlash.

And if that doesn't work, the ripe stench of fresh urine and feces all over the park will encourage the non-homeless people to stay away, so they won't be complaining about it any more.

Protip to the city: The bums aren't hanging out in the park solely because they need a handy potty. However, many other people would like to.

That's pretty much how Hinduism's class system works, only they manage to take any provability out of the equation by saying it's punishment for another lifetime. There are all sorts of hierarchical controls coded into religions. I'm not sure the prosperity gospel is all that new, even to Christianity. It's just a more democratic version of the divine right of kings.

Of course most religions also have messages on protecting the weak too. It's what you get when multiple authors write a text and claim it has divine authority.

"The city's new homeless initiative pushes for more engagement in services such as job training at facilities such as Safe Harbor, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office's homeless shelter next to the jail."

Whose genius idea was that? If I was homeless the last place I'd go for help would be a shelter next to (and run by) the police. Seems like a convenient way to get people into the for-profit prison system: ticket everyone for vagrancy/loitering when they walk out the door in the morning and then throw them in jail when they can't pay the ticket.

In Station Square Park, the downtown courtyard next to the $50 million Station Square condo tower, officials asked for removal of a hose that the homeless were using for water.

In an email last month, City Manager Bill Horne called cutting electricity in public spaces a priority. Station Square Park, he wrote, was "a real attraction for our street homeless."

Slashing urban amenities is the city's latest step in making it tougher to live on the street. The city's homelessness consultant, Robert Marbut, said street survival guides and "renegade" food giveaways only served to discourage the homeless from seeking real help.
