I'd rather buy a used car and maintain it than buy a hybrid; I have no interest in buying a product that's a result of the mining they're doing in China for rare earth metals. Also, from an emissions POV, a well-maintained car will blow the same concentrations as new cars (professor of mine had a 1980s Lincoln Continental that he modified so there were no emission control devices, and dumped pure gas into the thing, and STILL couldn't get it to fail a California smog test).
New cars are a waste of money. Put 1K in a savings account a year and you'll be able to afford any repairs that come up. And please, calculate your annual car payment before you tell me that 1K is too much to put away to maintain a car you own outright.
