Mercutio74: The_Sheriff_Is_A_Niiii: It should be. What's your point?

My point is that you want a government that's small and relatively impotent, but you want to trust them with managing something gigantic like assessing the voting status of several hundred million people.

I don't know how to break this to you but a country of over 300,000,000 people requires a lot of people and bureaucracy to run effectively. Especially if you're looking for it to run in a non-corrupt manner.

Saying that conservatives want an "impotent" government is hyperbole.........at best. Conservatives want a government that does not try and insert itself into every facet of people's lives and overregulate to the point where its difficult to do..........well.........anything without being politically connected.

The_Sheriff_Is_A_Niiii: Why is it so horrible that people have to show an ID to get their ballot?

I'm not. As long as the ID's are provided free of charge and are easily accessible.

Otherwise you're just creating a poll tax and making people have to pay in order to vote. Which is just wrong in any western democracy, especially here in the US.

As I've said before, in most cases photo ID IS provided free of charge. That's how Indiana's law got blessed off on by the Supreme Court.

The_Sheriff_Is_A_Niiii: Mercutio74: The_Sheriff_Is_A_Niiii: Your statement that Republicans are doing this solely to benefit themselves is pure speculation which gets repeated over and over again till it sounds like fact when it's not.

Certainly there must be a reason that the small gov't GOP is the party behind the voter photo ID laws. The Dems never seem to propose them. At this point you'll probably say, "Exactly, because the Dems rely on voter fraud to win." If that's the case, how come there's never any evidence of widespread illegal voter tampering? You'd think that a conspiracy on that scale would certainly show some cracks. There'd be investigations and indictments and a media circus.

Once again, without photo ID laws how do you know exactly who is walking in and picking up any particular ballot? Why is it so horrible that people have to show an ID to get their ballot?

James O'Keefe got caught because the people running the election center he went to said something to the effect of "I don't recognize you, and you don't look like who I remember this person to be."

You mean, like, I don't know, creating a Voter ID law to prevent voter fraud when only 0.0004% of the votes cast have been proven fraudulent, which is odd they would want such a thing if the margin of victory in every federal or state election has been higher than that.

If a state or federal ID was issued to everyone starting at age 18 and was fully funded by tax dollars, and was set up to ensure that special cases are dealt with properly (people who don't have birth certificates, for example) I wouldn't have an issue at all. Because that's not the case, it creates an artificial imbalance in the ability of people to exercise their right to vote.

And what stops people? The voter registration lists. I'm not sure how you wacky Americans do it, but in Canuckistan the appearance of your name on the list is tied (at the federal level) to your social insurance number which allows the gov't to track you specifically based on your 9 digit ID cross referenced with your name. This, through information you must report when you file taxes, gives the gov't a very simple way to verify your citizenship (also, whether you're alive or not).

Stile4aly: I'm fine with having photo IDs, but there should be a national standard ID card provided to every citizen free of charge on their 18th birthday. Unfortunately any suggestion of a national ID card brings out the conspiracy nuts.

Yep, I'd love it, particularly for when you visit a new state, no more getting turned down trying to buy a beer because the retard behind the counter has never seen your state's particular license style before. Same with when you move, too. I think they should normalize traffic laws so that your license is your license. When I moved to Utah, I had to retake the test all over again, although I'd had my license for almost 20 years at that point, not only that, but a can guaran-farking-tee you that the residents of this state don't have to take a farking test. I think in matters of ID, we SHOULD have something that is recognized nationally, this current system is stupid.

/And yeah, I'm not sure why the conspiracy people think a national ID card makes you any easier to "track"...

Serious Black: The_Sheriff_Is_A_Niiii: Serious Black: Millennium: Diogenes: We want legitimate voters on the roles. The process by which they're allegedly removing illegitimate voters is also removing a disproportionate number of legitimate voters.

I believe this is the proper time to ask for evidence to back up your claim?

Of the 1638 voters identified as ineligible in Miami-Dade County, 385 of them have provided proof to the state that they are eligible to vote. Considering this list was stated to be filled with nothing but non-US citizens, a false positive rate of 23.5% (so far) is pretty damn awful.

Ok, so let the citizens vote as they should and purge the non-citizens. This is not rocket science.

In other words, lets get rid of everybody who didn't respond to the letter asking them to verify their eligibility. There's just one problem with that. When almost a full quarter of the people you identified have verified their eligibility, the odds that the rest of the people who haven't responded are actually ineligible to vote drops precipitously. I'd say the odds that even half of the people on the list who haven't responded are ineligible to vote are about as low as me winning the Powerball, running out of my house to go celebrate, and getting struck dead by a bolt of lightning before I got to my car.

I'm not left wing - I'm a registered Independent who hates BOTH major political parties (so was George Washington, by the way). But how any election law can permit a person to simultaneously be responsible for the execution of fair elections, and be a co-chair of one candidate's campaign, is beyond me and beyond the pale. Corruption will always try to weasel its way into the system, but let's at least give it something of a challenge.

If that's a serious question, there are a number of data handling methods and process controls that give a very solid idea of whether it's a problem, as well as spot-checks at various polling places and so on.

If you actually don't understand why voter ID laws are hard to get off the ground, it's because usually the attempts to start a photo ID program attempts to fold it into the existing state ID program (which typically charges a fee, making it a poll tax) or the state drivers' license program (which will get you laughed out of the room because drivers' licenses are issued to non-citizens and even temporary residents/non-residents. If someone proposed a completely new photo ID that the state would shoulder the entire cost of producing and distributing (and replacing when they're lost) then it would easily pass constitutional and practical objections. It'd just be rather horribly expensive, which is why no one's done it, opting instead for half-assed systems that can't pass constitutional or practical muster.

Can't pass constitutional muster? Last I checked the ones being enacted are based on the Indiana model which was already blessed off on by the SCOTUS. So what are you talking about?

Meh, it will somehow be part of a corrupt federal system. No, it's much better if inept state bureaucracies handle this and make sure they close urban DMVs and make you hop 3 buses to get one.

At least be honest for once.

Yeah because not wanting to pay for other people's abortions, contraception and 12 other things is "shoving Christianity down people's throats". Spare me.

That's what you're doing now

Nobody's accused you of being terribly bright have they? Try and pay attention or go back to playing with your toys or something.

I am playing with my toys. I pick on idiots for fun.

In that case your family must be on the verge of suicide by now. Please ensure you keep sharp objects and firearms away from them.

As long as people still have to pay for other people's boner pills, it's cool, amirite?

And "conservatives" want to do away with ALL abortion, not just the ones they "pay for" And that is most certainly religion-driven.

Fkn "conservatives." All they do is slow progress down. They never actually stop liberalization, they just postpone it by a generation or two.

And with the pace of today's world, that means holding America back while the rest of the industrialized world plows ahead.

Thanks a lot, assholes

Paying for old men to get their little peckers hard is not ok either, thanks. So the right's only objection to abortion is if they're forced to pay for it?

Really? Seriously? You're going to claim that?

That's my objection. Do you speak for me?

So in other words, you have no idea what you're talking about then huh?

No. I have no idea what YOU are talking about. What's your point?

Put a photo on the voter registration card. Make that card free to obtain. Done.

Without DNA testing how will you know that the ID isn't fake? Is it so horrible to have to give a blood sample to to get a ballot?

Blood collection people won't take my blood. I guess I can't vote. I'm already disenfranchised in Florida primaries, why not go for the set?

If you can't finish a sentence without using the words leftist, libs, or similar vernacular, in every farking thing you post, you might be a partisan tard.
