Love how my argument/reply was completely ignored.

Sorry lol. I just skimmed this thread. You brought up GREAT points about release valves. My question is....What drew you MY LITTLE PONY? Do you have a young daughter? How does one start following a show aimed at young girls? (I realize to some in this thread, that even mentioning that a show is aimed towards girls is wrong.) That is the part that is strange to me. Who told you about this show?

But a good portion of those things are based on the society in which those men and women reside, not on their biological gender. If the gender-based likes of humans were absolutes, most things that are "for men" or "for women" would be the same across all, or at least most, cultures. Spend some time in other countries and interacting with people from different cultures and you will find that what is considered masculine or feminine is not the same. Yes, there absolutely are physiological and psychological differences between the sexes, but to suggest that all members of a gender, regardless of culture, are predisposed to like or dislike certain things shows that you have never actually spent any amount of time researching the topic.

All of the examples you provide are actually evidence of the societal role in the process, rather than "proof" of its absence. If it wasn't a societal construct, then culturally it would be like our secondary sexual characteristics. For example, one of the secondary sexual characteristics of being a male is that they have a penis. This is understood by people the world around. No matter what culture you look at, they accept that males have penises. No one goes around suggesting that men only have a penis because society taught them to have a penis. You can go to any country in the world and find that men do in fact have penises. The same is not true for the societal constructs that go along with gender. You will not find that men are necessarily interested in fast cars in every culture, or expensive "toys", or sports, or violent movies and games.

Whether you ...

Thanks professor, that was a very well written diagnosis of cultures. I mean, do we really have to delve this deep when we are talking about My Little Farking Pony? You will never, ever convince me that this show wasn't made specifically with little girls in mind. That is my point. Why are grown men watching this show specifically. I'm happy for your smarts. I'm sure you do well at cocktail parties. I applaud you. You're right, I haven't spent time researching this specific topic, you are above me. Again, to say that society has brainwashed males and females into enjoying certain things has some logic to it. But to make it an absolute is ludicrous. What will you buy your nephew for his birthday, a doll, a my little pony? No, most likely, you'll buy him those toys society forces on us maaaaan: a car, blocks, or a football. This isn't rocket science, it's simple human nature. Grown men watching My Little Pony is strange to many. That's just how it is. To explain it away by numerous uses of the word penis does little to explain this strange fascination with a little girls show.

My cousin and my best friend had told me about this show but wasn't really interested. I didn't have any real interest in the show until right before season 2 was about to start. I had seen some clips and fanart and was like "bleh"

But I had been asked by my cousin to babysit my nieces and nephews on saturdays for her... being the good uncle I am, I had to download whatever show the kids liked so as to have something ready for them.

So I started watching some of the episodes I had downloaded along with my nieces and saw that the show was actually good. When I found out that John de Lancie was basically gonna reprise his role as Q for the Season 2 premiere I was delighted. Watching those actual episodes + the ANH shoutout (the award ceremony) had my inner geek jumping in joy.

It is actually thanks to the show that I am seen as the cool uncle by all the kids nowadays -- and yeah, even my nephews like the ponies. The kids even gave me a couple of Rarity figures because they know I'm a lot like her.

I said it before, the show has amazing music, sound effects, memorable characters, really good writing, every now and then there's an episode that is a stinker and has you groaning as an adult, but for the most part the show is much better than many other shows and cartoons I've seen.

I consider the fact that the main characters being pastel colored ponies to be completely inconsequential -- they could be replaced by cute sharks and it woulda been the same for me.

You're being obtuse. Everything, and I do mean everything you just said right there outlines social constructs, not natural biological differences. Human beings, as creatures, imprint on societal norms as babies through their earliest development phases. However, there is also the false premise that gender biases are binary - only a minority of boys are purely into "boy things" exclusively, while most still show varying levels of interest in traditionally "feminine" things (makeup, jewelry, scents, soft cloths, babies, etc.). Many hide it due to ego overriding interest, driving right back at that societal pressure to conform to either a masculine or feminine ideal.

You're wasting time railing against what you perceive to be the "pussification" (not your words, but your sentiment) of the American Male, while sticking your head in the sand to the truth that Males have always been spread all over the gender bias spectrum. The reason things are more transparent these days is due to ubiquitous instant-communication technology. Societal norms exert less pressure when people are capable of researching issues and understanding what really is "normal" compared to what society declares.

tl;dr - Shiat like this has always been normal. You're just waking up to that fact. Go rooting through the possessions of men throughout the ages, and you'll find plenty of evidence to challenge your binary world view.

/and like I said, a good show is a good show
//doesn't matter who the target demo happens to be

That would hold water if it wasn't for my nephews coming up with the idea of the toy on their own. Also, if I were a weirdo, I don't think I'd be taking care of the kids saturday mornings.

You're free to continue to think I'm a weirdo... that's ok, I don't need your approval; conversely, I'll feel free to think you're a moron.

Not only will you not change his mind. I sincerely doubt he is even taking to heart the content of what you are saying. I think he's skimming through it looking for reasons to be dismissive by either questioning your motives of attacking you directly. Being right or wrong here (and you are right) has no bearing in a debate where both sides are not open minded. A super simple counter example would be to show that a hundred years ago little boys wore pink and wore dresses. You will find it impossible to dissuade him of the notion that MLP is a little girls show. No matter why you/I/we like it, no matter how adult oriented it really is, no matter why so many other adults enjoy it, you won't get him past the wall in the road of "it's a show for 8yo girls" I'm not necessarily saying give up, but at least acknowledge that its a losing battle if you continue.

nope. not at all. but don't you think it's a bit immature to come into a thread and call all the posters friendless weirdos? It makes people wonder what your motivations are, or at the very least why/how you've come to the conclusion that people watching a TV how called friendship is magic, some of whom clearly seem to be friends with others in the thread, are friendless. Yes, you do... But being entitled to once opinion means being responsible for said opinion...

If I go into a soccer/football thread and insist that all the football fans are a bunch of racist animals that enter into an uncontrollable rage because a few morons are unable to kick properly a damn ball based solely on the behavior of the hooligans, I'm basically asking to be insulted and antagonized with.

You have the right to express whatever you said, you have the right to call us who enjoy the show freaks and weirdos... that's YOUR prerogative.

It's mine to think that you are kinda a jerk for antagonize so vehemently about something that you don't understand, don't care to understand and it's not doing anything bad besides be "weird" to a bunch of what I think are pseudo-machos with an identity complex.

Dude, that's super sweet. I'm incredibly jealous.
I can't ever ride/have a motorcycle. I totally lack the capacity for moderation and self-control. If suddenly I'm on a bike that can go as fast as I want *WITHOUT* pedaling I'll die. Simple as that.
Similarly, when I rent a car (as I am rarely but occasionally wont to do) I specifically ask for their weakest and most gutless car. I will redline the sucker, whatever they give me. So I like a car with no engine. Something with horsepower in the 80's or 90's. that makes me a happy camper.

On a quasi related note, my ride to work on Tuesday morning was my best evar. By far. I took the longer route, 21 miles. It flirts with the peninsula foothills on the edge of Stanfurd's campus, and then bee-lines it into silicon valley. It accumulatively has 390 feet of ascent. I did it in 56:54 door to door. Garmin gave me a recorded average speed of 22 (actual was probably in the 23's or 24's because of accelerations and decelerations. Average recorded cadence was 92 (actual appears to be about 100) , average recorded Heart Rate was 167 (actual appears to be 174). I've been working towards breaking an hour on this route for years, and Tuesday I blew an hour out of the water! I'm so very proud. Now I just gotta get strong enough I can do this every day =D.

Anyways, riding a motorcycle would kill me, which saddens me but I realize it so I abstain. Your bike looks awesome and I'm jealous.

Yeah. You need a reason for that.

BigJake: The point was that gender is not a social construct.

That's funny, not a single person in this thread has said that gender is a social construct. Did you have fun knocking down that strawman? Was it a tough fight? I hope you didn't hurt yourself.

BigJake: Teufelaffe: If that wasn't your point

The point was that gender is not a social construct. There's a reason you're the only person I have tagged thusly

Wait you thought someone was claiming that GENDER was a social construct?

[benderwaityourseriousletmelaughharder.jpg]

The fact that you then have the balls to point out that you've marked someone else as IDIOT is just icing on the cake. I will say this for you Jake, as far as amusing idiots go you're pretty amusing. Maybe a little heavy on the idiot, but still amusing.

Teufelaffe: That's funny, not a single person in this thread has said that gender is a social construct.

I believe the argument was that Gender Roles and behavioral norms were a social construct. Of course, since he has dick to argue on that, he has to resort to the "SCIENCE SAYS SO AND THATS THAT HMPH" line of argument.

Biological delineation of gender through primary and secondary sexual characteristics are not the same as role norms, which are highly cultural in nature.

Exactly.

Gender roles ≠ Gender, ergo BigJake missed the point entirely and then lashed out at other people because he missed the point. I'd agree with I created this alt... and say he's an amusing idiot, but I don't find the willfully ignorant to be particularly amusing. Just tiresome.

Bleh, that should have been "Gender roles/norms ≠ Gender"

It really makes you wonder, don't you think?
Does this come naturally to him?
Is he *trying* to be this stupid.?
For example. there is the idiocy you just pointed out.
There is the incredible compliment he paid me, while trying to insult me =P.
He couldn't suck anymore without being a dyson plugged into the wall during a hurricane. And he couldn't fail any harder without being a blind counter-fitter inadvertently using crayons.

Uchiha_Cycliste: Dude, that's super sweet.

You'd fit right in with a good number of the track rats. I'm the conservative perfectionist, more concerned with getting my technique down and edging upward into the range where the bike is designed to perform. About half the other guys at the track are hormone junkies who aren't happy unless they nearly fling the bike off around every corner. You can tell who's who by looking at their gear. The junkies have gear rashed up along every surface, bikes with half (or all) of the plastics missing and mismatched parts.

But that's what the gear's for. Keeps ya relatively okay, while the track itself is designed to minimize sidelong impacts.

I'm sure moike has plenty of stories... LOL

A few of my pals don't ride on the street anymore, because they'd just get in trouble/dead. They save their bikes for the track.

Bought a Trek Soho S a few weeks ago, to get myself back into some form of decent shape. Wanted a SS to start for the simplicity (and I hate tuning shiat), while I'll flop it over to a taller fixed gear once I feel I'm not getting the workout I need from having the ability to coast.

I can make it maybe two miles before getting winded. :/

/so out of shape...

First off, don't switch to fixie mode. it will just accelerate knee wear. There are really three and only three (two of which are related) reasons to fixie a bike.
First and most obvious is racing at a velodrome.
Second is anti theft. It's a very simple bike little to steal, but from out point of view no different from a SS. This point also relates to the third.
Third, before disc brakes it was absolutely necessary for bike messengers. The fixed gear gives unparalleled stopping power in the rain. Rim brakes don't even come close. Rain doesn't stop messengers from having to deliver, it just makes ther runs more dangerous. Because they can stop the wheel at will, all they have to worry about is traction with the road which they can improve with tire pressure and width. Similarly fixies (especially the ones w/o quick releases) are easy to (un)lock quickly. see point two.

Everything you'e said tells me that none of these points come into play. So i beg you, stay in SS mode. All messengers will tell you that the fixie destroyed their knees. It's not worth it. Instead get a Garmin 500, or some other cyclometer with a cadence sensor and learn to spin. All the benefits and none of the risk.

More to follow in upcoming posts. This stands alone to stress its importance.

well, that was horrifically creepy

See, that's what I'm saying. While there are some dudes who watch and think they are Bronies, the real bronies are still better than furries.

Its like anything people can be a fan of. There are those of us who think it's entertaining, and enjoy it for what it is.

And then there's people like that tumblr page that take it to extremes that even fans of their obsession call it creepy. Trying to say everybody who likes something falls into the creepy category is, to use the same comparison I used earlier, like saying all fans of star trek are weirdos who learn klingon. It's just not true.

Now, it should go without saying. Btu if you have any questions, or you need mechanical (wrenching) help, or tips about commuting and riding etc... email me and let me know. I'll help in every way that I can. It's too bad you are 650 miles away. But you can always email me and then we an talk over the phone.

If your goal is truly increased fitness you will see the greatest gains from climbing. It will suck at first, and it will suck for quite a while... like a month probably, if you are willing to climb once or twice every weekend. However, once you get over that hump you will start getting much stronger and much fitter relatively quickly. Go hang out near the International Rose Test garden At first your goals should be just to get up the danm thing no matter how long it takes and how painful it is. After you have one climb under your belt, start doing longer climbs or more short climbs.( Incidentally another bonus of SS over fixue is the ability to descend hills and mountains.) You will probably find it beneficial to add bar ends to your bike. When you do so, remember that the bar ends should be parallel with the stem, whatever angle that may be. It will give you the most power, and the most comfortable position when using the bar ends, no matter how wacky it may look.

Every time you ride you need to check off the following things:
Gloves (numero uno)
Helmet
Spare tube, hand/frame pump, tires levers (if necessary) and the knowledge of how to change a flat.
If you are riding for more than 15 minutes you need water (or Gatorade) with you, and you should be drinking a little bit every 10 minutes.
If you are riding for more than 75 minutes you need food and should be eating a little something every 15 minutes. Bananas, tangerines and candy bars are personal favorites for ease of consumption, cost, tastiness and convenience.
If it is hot and sunny wear sunscreen.
I HIGHLY recommend you be wearing at least shorts with a chamois. Whether racer style lycra like I wear, or baggy shorts like may mountain bikers wear

Your saddle should be parallel with the ground and should be positioned such that you are sitting only on your sit bones.
If everything is set up right you should have no issues with your perennial nerve. Likewise, if you ever, EVAR have your junk go numb then you have positioning problems that must be dealt with promptly.

Well bud, that's all the basic info I have to impart upon you.
I'm going to get my shiat together and ride to work in a minute When I get there I'll respond to any inquiries you may have and I have some motorcycle ones myself.

I feel that anyone who watches and enjoys the show (and self-identifies) is a Brony.
That guy is a freak. If it was MLP it would be Sailor moon, or Sesame street, or Fresh Air, or something. He i off, and in this instance is using MLP-FIM as his outlet.
It is totally unfair to place all Bronies in a bucket based on him.

It's almost exactly like judging, comparing (to norms), criticizing and grouping all cyclists together in a bucket based on Biker Fox. It's a really dick move and wholly inappropriate.
