Kaybeck: FirstNationalBastard: Do I have to trot out the ol' C.S. Lewis chestnut about how approving of something because it's "Adult" means you're not an adult, or can we just explode that myth here?

The problem with that little "chestnut":

There's a distinction between being childlike and childish.

Wayne White, whose work you've seen in Pee Wee's Playhouse and the Smashing Pumpkin's video Tonight, Tonight is childlike. There's a documentary about him, called Beauty is Embarrassing highly recommended.

You want an an example of childish? Michael Jackson. He spent his entire life a child in a adult's body and spent the last years of his life regarded as a creepy pedo weirdo.

Lewis was childlike. Bronys? Not so much.

Using Michael Jackson as your example was probably not the best idea. Michael Jackson was the very personification of childlike. As you even say yourself, he was a child his entire life. He just happened to have a man's body.

So the difference between childlike and childish is what? If you find it creepy, it's childish?

I'm letting you set the level of discourse here. If you'd like it a bit more highbrow, then come up with something better than the "OMG, U GAIS R SUCH BABBIES AND FURRIS" you've given us so far.

I think the people leveling the charges of "manbabies" and the like sincerely feel their masculinity is threatened because someone else is comfortable liking something that the insecure ones don't consider manly. They've built their identity on an outdated concept of manliness and anything that runs counter to it threatens them by introducing the idea that maybe everything they believe might be just nothing more than that... what they believe, not reality.

/and the accusations of pedophilia? Well, that must be what they fixate on. They figure if they liked watching a show about candy colored ponies, their repressed urges to do such things as they accuse would come to light, so anyone who watches such a show must be the same.

Kuroshin: broktune: I get so confused reading these threads. Now, is MLP made specifically for adults or children or both? Are the adults finding "adult" themes to pick out of the episodes to justify them watching? When I watched G.I. Joe as a 10 year old, one could easily pick out adult themes with the violence, terrorism, romance, etc. My dad, or mom, never sat down and watched them with me and they never, ever would watch G.I. Joe on their own. Not one of my friends parents would watch cartoons without their children. So, what changed from 1984 to 2012?

I will never watch MLP. There is no way someone could tell me that a cartoon (possibly made for little girls) has more meaning and impact than an episode of G.I. Joe did 20 years ago that would appeal to an adult male. What changed?

I responded before to one of the numerous MLP threads and continue to be confused by the whole thing. It reminds me of adults actually arguing about the Nintendo Wii, a system obviously made with children in mind. Why is it so hard for people to grow up these days? Again, did ANYONE in this thread have their dad say to them when they were a child "Can't take you to baseball practice now son, Strawberry Shortcake is on the tube and they're really getting into something crazy." It DIDN'T HAPPEN. Why does it happen now?

Somebody has never seen The Animaniacs.

Or Freakazoid!

Or Spongebob. (although I don't like that one myself)

Or The Flintstones.

Or has ever gotten even half of the references or content in old Looney Tunes episodes.

/cartoons have always been made for young and old audiences

Yes, but all these shows you have mentioned aren't aimed primarily at very young girls (well, maybe Freakazoid, I don't know what that is.) That's what is the weird part for me. Sure, if a guy said he watched the Flintstones at 40 years old, big deal. If they say, My Little Pony....ehhhh. It's the aimed at little girls part that is the kicker for me. MLP has, and will always be a little girl toy. I remember my little sister brushing the little tail and mane and all plastic body (which I thought was weird, why not hair on the body). Now, I saw the Big Lebowski references and that is awesome. But, I'm sure you could go back and find similar adult references in Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow Brite. I knew of no adult male who watched those shows. And, I don't think ALL cartoons have been made equally for both young and old audiences. I think they are mainly aimed toward children, with the exception of The Simpsons, Family Guy etc. What is the advertising during MLP, I'm curious? There have been some very awesome responses, cool to read some thought out shiat.
