Some 'Splainin' To Do: You say that we've regressed because of this. I would call it progress, and I'll take it over that ancient John Wayne bullshiat any day of the week.

Amen. My father died in a hovel from cigarettes and booze trying to dream up new real estate schemes like the ones that worked for him in the '70s. My stepfather was a joyless, anal-retentive drone who did nothing but work, consume religious nonsense peddled by huckster preachers, and worry over the smallest details of his house.

If that's what being an adult is, i want none of it.

FirstNationalBastard: socodog: We are a society of adult adolescents.

Do I have to trot out the ol' C.S. Lewis chestnut about how approving of something because it's "Adult" means you're not an adult, or can we just explode that myth here?

Also, it doesn't make much sense to abandon things we enjoy throughout our lives just because some other person(s) decide that we shouldn't like them any more. Nor does it make sense to avoid finding new things to enjoy, for the same reason.

Fun shiat is fun. Being an adult just means you've got your own money to spend on fun things.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: And Hitler painted roses, so artists are automatically suspect of being Nazis. I really don't need to point out the gaps in that logic, do I?

that's not a fair comparison. pedophiles use their obsession with childrens interests as a way to lure children in. there is a causal relationship between pedophilia and childrens shows/books/movies. there is only a correlational relationship in your example. People who don't share an obsession naturally have a hard time understanding it in others, and i realize its not pleasant to admit your obsession also happens to be classic pedophile behavior, but if you understand it, it might help you understand some of why people react so negatively.

Indeed. And the thing of it is, there are lots of things that I like that have nothing juvenile about them. My favorite movie is probably "Synecdoche, New York", I tend to gravitate towards stories with downer endings (go see Oldboy if you ever feel the need to give up hope for human decency), and I'm a semi-serious wine snob in my spare time, just to give a few examples.

There are plenty of things in my life that fit snugly into the "adult" bin of life. The fact that I also happen to like a show with pastel colored talking ponies doesn't somehow negate all of those things, and I just don't understand the logic that says that it does.

I get so confused reading these threads. Now, is MLP made specifically for adults or children or both? Are the adults finding "adult" themes to pick out of the episodes to justify them watching? When I watched G.I. Joe as a 10 year old, one could easily pick out adult themes with the violence, terrorism, romance, etc. My dad, or mom, never sat down and watched them with me and they never, ever would watch G.I. Joe on their own. Not one of my friends parents would watch cartoons without their children. So, what changed from 1984 to 2012?

I will never watch MLP. There is no way someone could tell me that a cartoon (possibly made for little girls) has more meaning and impact than an episode of G.I. Joe did 20 years ago that would appeal to an adult male. What changed?

I responded before to one of the numerous MLP threads and continue to be confused by the whole thing. It reminds me of adults actually arguing about the Nintendo Wii, a system obviously made with children in mind. Why is it so hard for people to grow up these days? Again, did ANYONE in this thread have their dad say to them when they were a child "Can't take you to baseball practice now son, Strawberry Shortcake is on the tube and they're really getting into something crazy." It DIDN'T HAPPEN. Why does it happen now?

Because people are starting to realize that simply enjoying something because you like it is not a bad thing. As a society we're looking at some of the rigid, traditional attitudes about what is "proper" and realize they're outdated bullshiat.

It's like the people who have a very regimented idea of what foods are "acceptable" to eat at certain times of the day. Eggs, pancakes, waffles, biscuits, these are "breakfast" foods and should only be eaten in the morning as your first meal of the day. There's nothing about those foods that inherently makes them better as food sources in the morning. Your day is not going to be worse because you had a ham sandwich for breakfast instead of a couple of eggs and bacon. But there are people out there who take it very seriously. Hell, many restaurants won't serve you anything in the morning that's not on their "breakfast" menu, and won't serve you anything from their breakfast menu if it's not the morning. But it's an outdated concept that only exists as a societal creation. Sure, there are going to be some people who think you're weird for having a slice of pizza for breakfast, but here's the thing: the problem is not with you, it's with them. The problem is with their inflexible outlook on life that makes anything that differs from the norm become something to be feared and ridiculed.

The recent increase of adults enjoying "kids" shows, books, games, toys, etc is just the result of a bunch of people waking up and realizing that they are responsible for their own happiness. It's not up to society to make them happy, it's not up to their friends, or family, or employer, or anyone else. So, if they like an animated show about ponies, or playing a game system "designed for kids", or reading a book aimed at adolescents, they know that it's OK, because that's what helps them make their own happiness. If that upsets other people, that just means that they haven't found their own way of being happy.

Well, Fark apparently decided to eat the Weeners that I posted, so I'll try (and probably fail) to be brief.

First of all, unless you can point out a causal relationship between pedophilia and being a Brony, you're still engaging in the same fallacy. If you can do that, please show your work, otherwise, speaking as someone who has actually helped put away a real life pedophile for good, can you please drop that inference because its a farking ugly slur that hits me in a personal place and every time you say that, it makes me want to punch something. So please, be a decent human being, and stop, already.

And as I said before, I do understand the knee-jerk reaction. People see colorful ponies and go WTF. I get that, I really do. But, at the same time, I don't have much respect for people who don't try to get beyond their knee-jerk reactions to get at the underlying reasons. I especially don't like people who judge others without hearing what they have to say about themselves first. Which is why I'm trying to give you an opportunity to really understand us.

I'm willing to articulate why I like the show to you. I offer this in perfectly good faith. But, at the same time, I don't want to waste my time if you've already made up your mind about us. If there's no way that I can't convince you that we aren't scheming to sneak our snausages into kiddies, then I can do without the aggravation of trying. So I need you to promise me that you'll listen and genuinely consider my case.

Otherwise, I'll be sorry that you feel that way, but I'll stop trying to change your mind and we can each go our separate ways.

So what'll it be?

It's made for both by adults. It's like Animaniacs in that way. There's a story about three young girls trying to discover their talents for the kids, then in the sane shot you have Walter, Donnie, The Dude, and Jesus in the bowling alley. Your kids haven't seen The big lebowski. That's for us.

I said it on the previous thread --

It's a release valve.

I go out to hunt every now and then, practice sports, love playing violent videogames, read books from many kinds of authors, go to bars, every now and then hook up witha girl, or go straight to the strip club, paint, do the garden, grill, build a deck along with my cousins, go fishing, drink scotch, fix my truck, etc... I dont let any of that to define what I am.

Some days, I am just tired from work, i am tired of being cynical and negative; and watching the show puts a smile on my face, it's a throwback to my childhood, and normally makes me feel better about the world and just have a more positive outlook on life.

The show, and all the other things I mentioned are simply release valves from the day to day pressures of life. You know very well that life throws crap our way constantly, and we try to do things we enjoy as often as possible in order feel better -- those are our release valves, it just happens that some have a more unorthodox taste than others here and there.

The mistake people make on this and other instances is having a preconceived notion of what things are acceptable and what's not as a release valves/source of entertainment and then forcing such opinions on others.

I don't force my friends to share the same tastes I do, whether beer, tv shows, books or food, and they don't either -- we do exchange ideas and we try things out that are out of our comfort zone, and if we dissent on this or that, we all understand each other. I don't like some salads one of my friends makes, and he doesn't like to go hunting -- and we don't call each other names or consider each other less human beings because of that.

TL,DR: Love and Tolerate.

2012-06-13 10:01:32 PM
Whatever makes you happy as long as it's not hurting anyone. I was just trolling and hope I didn't offend anyone. I've dealt with the same crap for years because I love video games. It's getting better and views will change once the baby boomers are gone.

The problem with that little "chestnut":

There's a distinction between being childlike and childish.

Wayne White, whose work you've seen in Pee Wee's Playhouse and the Smashing Pumpkin's video Tonight, Tonight is childlike. There's a documentary about him, called Beauty is Embarrassing highly recommended.

You want an an example of childish? Michael Jackson. He spent his entire life a child in a adult's body and spent the last years of his life regarded as a creepy pedo weirdo.

Lewis was childlike. Bronys? Not so much.

Uchiha_Cycliste: I see your two favorite fandoms/communites have merged. =P

FYI here is how you are favorited: "(favorite: The most awesome pony maker I will ever interact with. srsly =3)"
