Rmoney: Unfounded claim about Obama
Media: Is it true about Obama?
Obama: Reality based claim about Rmoney
Media: Obama gave a speech today at a school.
Obama supporters: What about Obama's Romney comment?
Media: We gave both sides equal time you dirty communists!

Presidents are given a ton of media attention because they're, well, the president and they have a country to lead. But that doesn't mean THAT coverage is counted as their 50% fair share and the other candidate who spends all day criticizing their opponent because they themselves have nothing to do but run for office.

It's the unfounded claims that are driving me nuts.

Maddow and O'Donnell call him a liar several times a week and, as the article notes, Benen tracks Mitt for the Maddow show blog.

simplicimus: AirForceVet: Remember, voters. If Mitt Romney lies constantly during his campaign, imagine what he will lie about if he's wins the White House.

I'm amazed how much Romney lies. Don't the Republicans possess any sense of honor and integrity?

Lying is part of campaigning. It is not an attribute of only one party. What I find worrisome about Romney (and other liars like him) is he can't keep his stories straight. A sure tell of a lousy con man.

You're confused. Lying is not part of campaigning. Promises are part of campaigning.

Making up stuff is lying. For example, Mitt was against the US auto industry bailout, saying he preferred they go bankrupt. Now he claims he was for their bailout since it worked so good.

And no, I won't vote Republican, in spite of your mistaken claim all parties' candidates lie.

Cocksuckers, all.

I get that feeling too when I'm feeling tin-foil hattish. It seems like they want this to be neck-and-neck so they squeeze every advertising dollar possible out of it. Well other than Fox, they just want another republican in office so they can go back to calling anti-war protestors "traitors"

The one thing that has ever made me suspicious of conservatives-THEY LIE-. When the truth works better-THEY LIE-. Even when they are right (sometimes they are)-THEY LIE. Now Republicans are jumping on the lie your ass off bandwagon. This really sucks, because it is hard to give someone a vallid point, and they do have them, when it is accentuated, and accessorized by CRAP! When did things get so far out of balance in the Republican party?

I'm not really a fan of Romney and I think Obama is, at least by contrast, one of our more open and reasonable politicians.

That said, this is ridiculously unfair to Romney even for the internet. Rhetoric that's not 100% factually correct is not the same thing as lying, in US politics you're expected to be somewhat hyperbolic and emotional and Obama does it too. The media isn't "fact-checking" things like "Obama has no jobs plan" because only someone being intentionally obtuse would interpret that as "Obama's administration has literally put forward zero ideas regarding federal encouragement of hiring and employee retention" when it clearly means "In my opinion, this administrations efforts regarding employment have been insufficient".

This bullshiat is nonsense in the same vein as the media making a big deal over the "the private sector is fine" sound bite (from a larger speech outlining plans for aiding the private sector which make the meaning clear from context) and the "we don't need more teachers" sound-bite (in a similar speech making the actual meaning clear in context). I don't need the media to fact check jokes, hyperbole, and one-liners for me, because I'm at least slightly smarter than a doorknob and thus already know from context that that's what they are. All I need them to fact-check are actual specific claims presented as important, in-context details of plans of action. Because I need to know if the environmental impact assessments actually recommend delaying the construction of the trans-national oil pipeline project when we're considering investing lots of money in it, and I don't need to know whether the governor of NJ actually put exactly 10% of the legislature behind bars for corruption as AG when he's making a casual point about corruption in the state being a problem.

Oh. Sorry. I meant the media. I've talked with people in the industry who admit that it really is about the ratings. This is why they make the news, not report it. This is why they want a close race, not an honest one.

When Obama has an actual coherent thing that's been specifically called a "Jobs Plan", saying that he has no jobs plan is in fact a lie. It's not hyperbole or stretching the truth, it's a lie.

Hmm, let's review. Politifact rated Obama's SOTU statement as half true when he said that businesses had created x number of jobs during y period, when those numbers were accurate, claiming that it was misleading for him to attribute those jobs to his policies. Called on it, they upgraded the rating to mostly true.

Then, Romney claimed to have left Mass. with a 4.7% unemployment rate, which is accurate. Politifact rated it as half true, because it didn't account for generally lower unemployment nationwide (I'm not making this up - this is what passes for "fact checking"). Called on it, they -- you guessed it -- didn't change the rating.

Bilaterally flawed, yes. But bilaterally prejudiced? I don't think so.

Their "Lie of the Year" was the statement that "The Paul Ryan Plan would Destroy Medicare as we know it."
