Karma Chameleon: Diogenes: I'll be the first to say, "Not helping."

Whatever. We need more firebrands like this. The right can make outrageous comments with impunity, and it's goddamn effective. Look at the course of dialogue in this nation. It keeps moving further and further right. Why is it when a liberal says something outrageous, they immediately have to apologize?

Oh, please, they all say shiat like this and they all get away with it. We're doing exactly what they want us to be doing, talking about it. Genius American political discourse ala the Jerry Springer show. Why talk about facts and important topics when you can listen to the latest outrage on Fox News or MSNBC?

No one cares about Ted Nugent either.

Romney courted Nugent's endorsement. Did Obama ask for Behar's help?

Are both sides bad?

Aaannd there's the "degree of wrongness" stupidity I just mentioned.

How dare I try to be fair and even handed, and call out a nut when I see one. I've betrayed the cause!

OK. I hope ALL of Romney's houses burn down!

Am I doing it right?

It's that sort of thinking that makes good people become worse than their enemies. If you're OK with that, fine. I want no part of it.

You sure are. You're agreeing that some random woman on television needs to be denounced because she doesn't like Romney. You're agreeing to that because it's exactly the same as Nugent being courted by the Romney campaign and then threatening the President. Exactly the same. And it doesn't matter that the right not only didn't rebuke Nugent, they defended him. Both sides are bad.

You'll be voting Republican in no time.

I guess, but being "the better man" has never, ever, ever been effective in American politics. The whole notion of an "elevation of discourse" is impossible if one particular side refuses to ever return the favor in kind. At some point one has to realize the futility of the effort and cut their losses.

I agree that this asshole in this article is a waste of time, just like Ted Nugent is. I do take solace, however, in the fact that she's just some random talking head on some television show, and not a keynote speaker at a major political rally. I do think there's a difference, and I don't think both sides are the same.

Get a fire department Morman!

2012-06-13 11:40:23 AM

Tickle Mittens: Here's the thing about that. The consequences of Mitt Romney's professed ideology is that more houses WILL burn down, and in the process result in more people burning to death. Mitt Romney doesn't say it specifically, but his wish is that more people "Die in a fire." Interestingly, there's no particular malice associated with this wish. He just desires that more randomly selected people burn to death in fires. And not just a few of them, but in pretty significant numbers. Numbers big enough that were it one event, the delta between the status quo and his policies would be a long remembered international event. Elect Mitt Romney, and see his policies enacted is exactly equivalent to seeing large numbers of people burn to death in preventable/controllable fires. Then we start adding in the poisoning of drinking water, and increased cancer deaths, et al. What is the offset of these many lost lives, uncountable lost years of productivity? Tax cuts for the wealthy, who will continue poorly allocating wealth lent to them, thus reducing economic efficency even more.

So, yeah, it's morally defensable to advocate the violent murder of Mitt and Ann Romney. Trading two lives of objectively terrible, if not overtly malicious, people for the lives of thousands of random individuals, annually. The devil's calculus provides a clear result.

So... conversely, if I hate Americans and enjoy seeing them suffer... you're saying I should vote for Mitt Romney?

....

Vote Republican! Americans deserve it.

2012-06-13 11:40:52 AM
Well, I suppose Mitt and his Campaign are more interested in letting everyone's house burn down.

It's all for the greater good for just one of Mitt's houses to go up in smoke.

Yes, I denounced a stupid remark. Surely I'll overhaul my entire ideology.

I don't care how big or small, important or unimportant she is. It was dumb, it doesn't help, and I said so. That makes me a Romney supporter? Asshole.

While accepting for the moment that there are degrees of wrongness, and some people may be serving in more official capacities with the campaigns than others, I am reminded of how often "we liberals" say we denounce our crazies while the conservatives put them in the driver's seat.

Well, here was a perfect opportunity to exercise consistent ideals. And I'm seeing a big heaping of FAIL.

Also, they have to wear their fireman jackets even while they sleep.

Actually they spray the charred frame of the house after the fire, saving it symbolically.

Well, the Republicans are used to the idea of an entertainer publicly representing their party (Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, et al), so they get really confused when the Democrats are capable of viewing an entertainer as just an entertainer and not the mouthpiece for their political party. The confusion leads to fear, the fear leads to anger, and the anger leads to them lashing out like an injured animal at anything that anyone who's not a true-blue, dyed in the wool Republican says.

There are other ways to mock his stupid firefighters comment without wishing his house burns down.

This is the problem with the left. Rational Compassion. The right does not understand or practice such niceties. They go right for the throat. This is why dems are losing.

Was the point you're expecting someone to rebut intelligent in the fist place?

At some point, it becomes tiresome and pointless to attempt intelligent responses to a constant barrage of "SOCIALISM! FREEDOM HATER! NANNY STATE! BIG GOVERNMENT! WEALTH REDISTRIBUTION!"

If you're looking for intelligent discussion, as Diogenes is attempting to demonstrate, then your first move should be to attempt in that yourself.

There is no need for the wonton destruction of precious capital investment. One shouldn't wish for Romney's house to burn down. One should wish for Romney to get caught in the fire while doing a photo-op and die a painful death, and then his house is given to an orphanage to house the hundreds of needy children it can support instead of the single billionaire that it does support.
