Sure, I'll have to claim Ted Nugent and Kid Rock and a few other Michiganders now that we're embracing the term, but Ihor Stetkewycz, not so much. I dunno man. We got a LOT of rednecks around the North. shiat, they have "Proud Redneck" stickers on their trucks (with plastic balls on hitch). They're pretty much everywhere.

Take Kentucky for instance. It's further South then Indiana and there are way more hillbillies than rednecks in Kentucky.

Imagine how the average Fark PC nazi's head would explode. Yet, using hillbilly or redneck to demean goes unnoticed here. If you do take offence, you get the historical context/people in power spiel. Look at the history of rednecks. A religious minority amongst the Anglicans, a thorn in the side of some royalty, indentured servitude, then poor farmers, then workers. Yes, they acheived some power, like other minorities in their enclaves do. A few even attained the Presidency, but after they had distanced themselves from their heritage. There are reasons that they were some of the first to refer to themselves as Americans. Sure, they have horrible shiat in their history, but there are few groups, if you look closely enough, that don't.

Must be able to read." Sure enough, it looked like no copies were rented out. It did make me wonder how the sign was supposed to help someone who couldn't read . . . .

I think the subtitles on films like that are overrated, and thus so is the ability to read them.

Now, where I visit is kind of country so I'm not certain, but I was under the impression that Belleville's hillbillies are outnumbered by Poles.

Heh. Well played. I honestly wasn't sure what to make of it all. I just feel bad that real rednecks should be made to feel bad just for being rednecks, just because people may be eager to say things about them that aren't always true -- or in many cases, may be true, but not relevant. (Everyone "talks funny" from someone else's perspective. And there are no "normal" people in the world; that's a mistaken impression created by people's tendency to associate with other people like them.)

He kind of sounded like Bobby Heenan to me.
