halB: I thought guns were banned in NYC! How the hell did those thieves have guns? And why weren't the police there to immediately stop the crime just as it was being committed?

Indeed. Also, why metal detectors in school? Certainly NYCs gun control laws work and keep guns out of schools, right?

a laminated map of my route home around my neck and the bus number jiffied on my arm each day was all I needed.

Dinki: So the company running these 'Safe mobile storage' trucks isn't responsible for replacing the stolen phones? Kinda negates the whole 'safe' thing.

Yeah, there's an implicit promise in the name. I think the court would say they have to replace them.

ha-ha-guy: Glenford: AqueousBoy: Damn kids shouldn't have cell phones anyway.

/my lawn, get off it

We need to stop thinking of them as phones. They're computers that can make phone calls.

What the school really likely fears are the microphones and cameras on them. In part because some of the kids would try to snag photos from the girl's locker room. Also in part because some humiliating videos of the school's incompetent teacher might hit Youtube. I did my high school time long before cellphones and we had a principal who loved to blatantly check out the girls. In this day and age the school would end up with video proof he was a pervert and an ugly lawsuit on their hands. Back then it was our word against his.

/one guy punched the principal after the principal put a han don his girlfriend's ass
//principal of course denies the who hand thing and runs the kid for assault
/the principal left after three years due to a steady stream of vandalism that was directed at his personal property

Yeah, schools like to shoot the messenger.

ha-ha-guy: I really want a phone company to make one that doesn't support texting. Or uses the GPS to figure out if you're going over the speed a human walks at and locks out everything but 911. All my teenagers have crappy flip phones with no data and limited texting ability in an attempt to limit bad decisions regarding phone usage. I still want them to have a phone so they can call me in an emergency.

Going faster than walking speed doesn't mean you're driving. It could mean you're a passenger.

animal900: And most families still have land lines. I suspect the whole "cell phone only household" phenomenon is largely contained within the childless, highrise couple households.

My wife and I live on the border between rural and suburban. We have a child, and have been a cell-phone only household for over five years.

/my anecdote defeats your supposition :)

if the police did roll up on those doosh bags while phone pilfering was in progress they'd be doing some heavy time for some stupid crime. like most hoodlums, not the brightest kids on the block.

One thing I keep seeing in the above posts are questions why the school doesn't take care of the phones for the kids, either by having an area to lock them up, keeping them in the office or whatever.

The answer is simple: The school doesn't want the liability. If the phone were to become lost during its stay in the office, it's the school's problem. They seriously don't want $10K (replacement cost) worth of phones stashed in the receptionist's desk drawer. Nor would they want to deal with the kids who want a new phone so they break the thing and then go "It worked when I gave it to the school admin, and it's broken now. Gimme."

Some enterprising person grabbed their own bootstraps and bought a used U-Haul truck, parked in front of a hydrant and started renting storage for the day for a buck. This is what America is about, people. Enterprise.

\Then they got held up, duct taped and lost the day's receipts.
\\Maybe they should have bought a used check cashing van.

ciberido: ha-ha-guy: Do people really not have passcodes on their phones still?

I'm sure it's retro or Luddite or something, buy my mobile phone is ... a phone. I don't text with it, take pictures, or do anything with it other than use it as a phone. It doesn't even have voicemail (well, theoretically it does, but I deliberately don't even know how I would check it).

The most advanced feature it has (that I use) is that I can see I missed a call and then call that person back.

Shut up you hipster

itsdan: Cell phones were less popular when I was in high school but plenty of us had them. If we were using it, they asked us to put it away. If the person continued using it or if it rang in class, they took it until the end of the day. It worked fine because they expected us to act reasonably like adults, and most of us did. When you treat people like infants, they live up to those expectations.

so wrong.

Drakin020: CAADbury: grinding_journalist: It's almost as if you turn off your phone (or put it on silent) and don't use it during the school day, not only will nobody know you have it, but you can bring it to school in your bag or pocket, and it won't get stolen! Amazing!

Nope. This is what school entrances look like nowadays:

Wait is this for real? Like...I'm not joking is this serious?

Finished HS in 2003, never had anything like that.

Yup, that's the way it is in many places. Remember this picture the next time you read someone's b*tchfest on FARK about school expenditures. This is where a fair chunk of the money is going, along with cameras and other security.

I mean, I could see it in areas with a high black community or something. Or the "Rougher" part of areas where crime is high. But not everywhere.

You did NOT just type this sh*t.

Goes to show how stupid kids are these days.
