Yes they were.

TMNT, Inspector Gadget, He-Man, Chip and Dale, Smurfs, Silverhawks, DuckTales, Gummi Bears, GI Joe, Tansformers, Thundercats, Voltron, M.A.S.K., COPS and CROOKS, Dino-riders, Dungeons and Dragons.

Great cinema? No. But hella entertaining and a great way for parents to get an extra half hour of sleep Saturday morning

80s cartoons were mostly crap... until the late 80s. That's when you got Tiny Toons and TMNT and the Disney animation block.

I was always partial to Thundar the Barbarian, if only because the rampant destruction on the Earth when the Moon tears in half was pretty brutal for its day. Some hard core shiat went down on this world, I would think to myself.

but EVERYTHING was way better when *I* was a kid, and furthermore kids these days comma

'90s were the best.

Rocko's Modern Life
Doug
Ren & Stimpy
Animaniacs
Hey Arnold!

These shows pushed the envelope to the farking edge, while still being aired during the daytime on kid's channels.

2012-06-13 11:55:55 AM
What I watched Saturday morning's:

Muppet Babies
Dungeons and Dragons
Galaxy High
Pole Position
Q-bert
Hulk Hogan's cartoon, whatever it was called
Pee Wee's Playhouse
Star Wars had a cartoon for, like, a minute

They probably don't hold up now. But I enjoyed the hell out of them.

They were certainly more inventive...I mean, the guy is singing the praises of the updated versions of these cartoons while failing to point out that they are still rehashes of the old stuff. There's some legitimately good new stuff out there, Adventure Time being one that really stands out, but a lot of cartoons today are not new concepts like they were in the 80s and 90s. They are very good (the new Thundercats cartoon is farking amazing), but they are not giving us new characters for the next generation to grow up with.

Animainiacs was really good at that, Goodfeathers, mobster pigeons on a kids show and let us not forget Hello Nurse.

the cliché-riddled story lines of the original show

Who cares if they were clichés? Clichés aren't annoying when you've never been exposed to them before. You know, if you are a kid. Watching a cartoon.

If you are an adult watching a cartoon designed for kids and complaining that it isn't nuanced enough, you've issues.

Mid-to-late 80's and very early 90's were my favorites. Basically right up to when they quit showing cartoons on Saturday mornings.

-Kidd Video
-Super Mario Bros.
-Captain N, The Game Master
-Pro Stars

-Of course there is always Gummy Bears, Smurfs, Snorks, and the original Looney Toons.

Most of the ones I remember were great. Ninja turtles, the remake of Batman that Bakshi did, Ren, Stimpy, liquid tv....

BUT THE CARE BEARS WERE THE WORST, MOST NAUSEATING, PRODUCT-PIMPING OOEY GOOEY SICKENINGLY SWEET HOURS OF MY LIFE I WILL NEVER GET BACK (single mom, raised daughter in the 80s).

You forgot Bravestarr. :)

I so want a live action MASK. I remember seeing an entry for Mask on the TV listings scroller (remember those?) Tuned in, and was permanently scarred by Eric Holtz's face.

Also, I had a bunch of toys from this one-season wonder:

Grew up in the 80's and 90's but my favourite cartoon has to be Samurai Jack

Batman: The Animated Series changed the game. It's hard to watch an animated action show without comparing it to that, even today.

There's a new CGI Care Bears on now. The Hub is hoping Pony lightning will strike twice.

I still say if they wanted to attract an out of the traditional demographic audience for the new Care Bears, they would have used Faith No More's "We Care A Lot" as the theme song.

2012-06-13 12:10:27 PM
Actually, I genuinely think that, cheap animation aside, the Inhumanoids would have been cutting edge for 2013, let alone 1984 (or whenever).

"Do you fear death more than you fear me?"

The big advantage that 80s cartoons really had is that the formulas had not yet been figured out: everything was experimental, because there was no way to be otherwise. The end result is that you had a staggering array of stinkers, but also a number of truly original gems.

But I do wonder if there might be something to the idea of the older cartoons being less of a closed-world thing, and thus more open to imaginative play. Closed, consistent world-building in cartoons really is a more recent thing, and it makes some truly awesome things possible, but is there perhaps a price to pay for that?

2012-06-13 12:10:55 PM
Lets not forget about Pinky and the Brain. It was mid to late 90's when I should have been too old for cartoons but damn it was good.

2012-06-13 12:11:08 PM
Robotech
Voltron
He Man
Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z)
what the hell else did I watch?

GI Joe
shiat tons of reruns of Leave it to Beaver, Adams Family, Munsters, Partridge Family, Brady Bunch, Speed Racer, Knight Rider,

2012-06-13 12:11:42 PM
I really like the 80s cartoons because that was before everything became "cute" anime looking. I am a fan of the TMNT, GI Joe, Silverhawks, and Transformers. The less action cartoons that were awesome are Duck Tales and Chip and Dale. I saw the first season of Thundercats on sale the other day and bought it. Yeah it's super lame to watch as an adult.

/I saw someone mention Batman the animated series. That was a great cartoon.
//tried watching my dvd of the Transformer's animated movie a few months back to help me sleep. It was too exciting and I ended up watching the whole thing. Don't judge me
///you've got the touch

And basically anything they played on USA Cartoon Express was awesome.

Hysteria!...

I think last decade had some good ones too
The Fairly Odd parents
Sponge Bob
Jimmy Neutron
Rocket Power

But you're right. 90's was a great time to be a kid and I got to catch the end of the 80's awesome cartoon wave.
/although this article isn't bad. He's just mentioning the quality of animation and writing vs. those old school cartoons

For those of you mentioning nick cartoons from the 90s, have you checked out the 90's are All That? Weekly i've been watching Doug and Hey Arnold with the occasional Rugrats once in a while. On New Years I was watching a marathon of Salute Your Shorts(not a cartoon, but hey). I checked the website and watched a few episodes of Rocket Power.

All I need is for them to air Double Dare and Legends of the Hidden Temple now. Too many teasers, not enough shows.
