TrainingWheelsNeeded: alessandro: TrainingWheelsNeeded: nothing for nothing but why can't CONCACAF merge with CONMEBOL. I realize they are different continents but CONCACAF qualifying is boring.

75% of the CONCACAF member nations are from the Caribbean. Why would they want to join CONMEBOL? A country like Jamaica has a hard enough time against Mexico and the United States. What chance would they have of qualifying for a World Cup if they had to play countries like Brazil and Argentina, too?

yeah, I guess. Maybe the US can defect or Caribbean soccer teams can spend their national sporting resources on bobsledding or some such other sport where they might stand a chance.

CONCACAF (outside of Mexico/USA) > Oceania (especially after Australia joined the Asian qualifying group). Now that's some terrible qualifying. At least in CONCACAF you never see games like this.

Heh... looks like the two defenders near the eventual goal-scorer gave up on the play, thinking he was offsides, but he smartly (I think) didn't so much as move until the ball bounced near the far post.

/That's how it works, right? As long as you don't affect the play, you're good?

To quote FIFA Laws of the Game 2010/2011

"Offside position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the
second-last opponent

A player is not in an offside position if:
• he is in his own half of the field of play or
• he is level with the second-last opponent or
• he is level with the last two opponents

Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball
touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
involved in active play by:
• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position

No offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
• a goal kick
• a throw-in
• a corner kick

Infringements and sanctions
In the event of an offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick
to the opposing team to be taken from the place where the infringement
occurred (see Law 13 - Position of free kick)."

So interpret that as thou wilt.

2012-06-13 01:11:25 PM
Having found the 2011/12 version of the Laws of the Game, to be more current, the offside rule has not changed from my prior post.

Denmark should just start playing like they did back in the 70's and start breaking portuguese legs. Give them a reason to roll around on the ground crying foul.

Heh... Apparently Jason de Vos (Canadian soccer player/analyst, in-studio for TSN (ESPN)) hates the way the rule is written.

Had that cross come off the bar/post or a defender, the scorer would've been deemed offsides. I guess it's up to the referee to determine how much (if any) advantage was gained by the extra 2-3 yards of separation Bendtner was allowed by the defenders (who certainly must've assumed he'd be flagged).

/I love how the Ref is not giving Postiga anything after his antics
//...and he's ben subbed out.
